Rim/Wheel Discussion: Stock vs Steelys vs Aftermarket

Word, I had had my eyes on some from total chaos. balling on a budget though and need to go as cheap as I can w/o cutting corners. Seen dudes with Freedom off-roads and Bilstein just dropped some I’m pretty sure. Either way feels like a roll of the dice though.

Freedom arms scare me a bit. Not to piss off anybody who has them. Total chaos are damn near $800 these days, when I bought Camburg they were only $559 and now they're around $750 too. Even the SPC are expensive these days. I'm glad I finished buying all that crap years ago.

 

Wha?!? I used to be all "Hey, starfish! you're looking a bit tired but I still luv ya." But now I'm all "Hey, starfish baby, you're all retro and oem and road rashed, but hotdamn! y'all are forged and shit! That's hot!"

I don't know the weight differences of Tundra wheels but in the VW world 14 lb Mercedes CLK forged wheels are super-trick while the 30 lb aftermarket wheels are lame (for good reason). It's part of the language one needs to decode.

This is still true today, I have seen a few guys running around with modern VWs on Mercedes or even Porsche wheels.

This post reminds me of a question that I wanted to ask the forum. I am running 265/70R16 all terrains on my 2005 DC SR5 2WD, yet the label on the door jamb says that that my stock tires are 245/70R16. I have only had the truck since February, hence I don't know when the previous owner put on the larger tires. In my owners manual, I see that some of the models came with the 245/70R16 tires stock and some came with the 265/70R16 tires. I wonder why some models had the larger tires and others did not.

 

@ProudTundran for some trucks it was part of a package, like if you had a limited or a 4wd or some special editions. I believe the tow package included them as well. I'm pretty sure if a number opted for alloys (over stamped steel wheels) they came with 265s. I honestly haven't seen more than a handful of Tundras on 245s, the only ones I have seen were single cabs with stamped steel wheels.

 

With my 265s, I ran a quick test against my GPS set at 60 mph and the speedometer on the truck was reading 60 to 61 mph. While the truck called for 245s from the factory, I was looking to see if I could see much of a difference and I am happy with the accuracy of the speedo against my GPS. My assumption is that the first gens with the 265s would have the lower rear gear ratio or some other difference from the trucks with the 245s. I have the tow package and I am going to pull a 4,000 lb. camper in a few weeks so I will see first hand if the truck still has plenty of power with the 265s. I have a feeling that I will be pleased with the pulling ability of my Tundra.

 

Mine says it came with those from the Toyota vin lookup thingy.

 

My 01 shows the same thing on the door card. When I look up info on Toyota owners it says it came with 245/70r16 with "styled steel wheels". When I bought it there were 265/70r16 on it with the aluminum starfish wheels. My truck is an SR5 with the TRD package. Seems odd it would have the smaller tires.
