If the 2022+ Tundra has a transmission cooler, and I buy one of the trucks I will make sure to flex nuts on all the 2.5 gen owners that don’t have one who complained the new truck is ugly or doesn’t have a V8 or blah blah.

 

Interesting thing is Toyota did their research on the use of less than 5% of Tundra's for heavy towing but that's not what we want when shopping for a truck. Domestics figured that out and kept increasing towing and payload capacity so people would buy them. same goes with all-wheel drive and four wheel drive in case you go to snow and live in California. no really needs it but they keep selling them.
We want what we want even if we don't need it. Hopefully Toyota figures that out on the 20222.

 

i'd be disappointed if it's only going to be a v6 bi turbo, which everyone speculates it'll be. just feels too ford-ish to me. a v6 biturbo hybrid on the other hand sounds promising whether it be combined with an electric motor or hydrogen. A v8 biturbo would seal the deal for me but the way the world is moving towards zero emissions it's highly doubtful. IMO pick-up trucks should v8's or bigger. if u want better gas mileage buy a prius

If its going to beat the F150 in payload it will need to have a HD payload configuration that tops 3,220 lbs, because that is the top payload on the F150

 

And if we are only talking about the powerboost the payload will have to top 1,830 lbs, which is on a Crewcab 4x4. Thats pretty much more than the tundra payload now on the base 2wd longbed. I hope you are right regarding payload, but their numbers have to go way up from what they are now to even match the F150 in many different configurations.

 

I was thinking what does it have to have to be a "World Beater". there are already hybrid trucks with good towing capacity.

I'm thinking they will step it up and say a Plug In Hybrid with 100 more pounds towing than the new F150 and a better generator. They will be ridiculed if they don't top the F150's numbers.

 

The change is one reason I went ahead and got my 2021 instead of waiting. I'm glad I did.

 

All transmissions have a cooler, it’s in the radiator. Not all vehicles have a secondary transmission cooler. Payload can is an issue on a lot of trucks. 4 adult males in the truck 700 to 1000# right off the bat. Throw in a 5000# trailer, that throws another 500# on the hitch. So now up to 1,500#. That includes nothing extra in the bed, and probably need another 300# on the hitch for a larger trailer the truck is capable of pulling. So getting to 12,000# payload adds up pretty quick.

Everyone talking about towing heavy frequently calls for a 3/4 ton, what are you considering heavy? We talking 5, 7, 10k or what?

 

If I had to tow anything over 8-10 regularly I would look for a 3/4 ton.

The current 2021 Tundra Platinum 4x4 crew cab lists 1530 on the Toyota.com website for payload but the door sticker is actually 1185, sometimes less because of add-ons. As long as the new 2022 Tundra Hybrid has better payload than 1500 on the door sticker, I’m in. And it probably will, since the LC300 is about 440 pounds lighter. I would expect the new Tundra to have similar weight savings over the outgoing generation.

 

You must not live in a town setting. Reno city proper doesn't have much speeds going over 25-30mph. That's regular driving too. The electric motor on the f150 is something special.

 

You gamed that mpg result, drive in such a way to stay in ev as much as possible, downhill. I don't think anybody here believes that.
I can reset the mpg in my Titan and go several miles over 50mpg displayed.

TFLTruck took most half tons on the Ike gauntlet this year, you'll need to compare each individual video, however they were all the same route, conditions and trailer type and weight.
I didn't see a Tundra tested, but I saw the test of the Nissan Titan which is nearly as epic of a guzzler as the Tundra, and under load it actually did about 1mpg better than the F-150.

Don't take that as shade being thrown at your particular truck, the EB/PB engine produces power much more calmly than the frantic gear changes and noisy V8s do.
Also, the PB gets excellent unladen mpgs.

However, that awesome TTV6 swills gas like there's no tomorrow when towing heavy.
It wouldn't stop me from buying it, great powertrain, I just won't buy a Ford for a bunch of other reasons.

Also, don't understand why current Ford owners stay active on a Tundra forum.
Every time I change vehicles, I abandon that forum. No one on a VW forum wants to hear how much better and more reliable my Q60 is over my GTI.

 

Well that result is definitely the result of gaming it, but in regular daily driving in town I average between 28-30 mpg.

Like most Toyota products we'll have to wait and see on this one. I have typically hated the looks and design of the new gen Toyota products (i.e. Gen 2 and 3 Tundra, Gen 3 Tacoma, Gen 5.5 4Runner) however they seem to grow on you over time and you kind of accept it. Hopefully that'll be the case with the new gen Tundra and that it will look better in person. Either way I don't think it'll be ugly enough that I won't buy it. We need a full size truck for a camper and I have never really liked the domestic brands. An HD truck would be overkill for us as well. As along as the payload is decent, the powertrain is smooth, and the looks aren't atrocious then I'll likely get one.

I put a fully refundable $500 deposit on one this week and the salesman told me I'd be 5th or 6th in line. Fully refundable was the key here as my local dealership wanted a $1,000 non-refundable deposit. Yeah right, pass. I'll likely spring for the TRD Pro and the dealer does not do markups. So if I can get a new gen TRD Pro Tundra for MSRP I think that'll be solid in todays market since even prior to covid TRD Pro's were going for MSRP or more anyways. I've heard of dealers marking up their in-stock 2021 Tundra's 5k-10k just because it's on the lot and available although that seems more common place in your east and west coastal states. And if I don't like it then no biggie, I'll just get my deposit refunded. I'll be selling my 2011 Tacoma and 2016 4Runner which are both paid off for the Tundra, so out of pocket costs shouldn't be too bad either. I get to downsize fleet, get new tech, and zero miles on the odometer as well.

 

I agree. A door sticker of 1185 doesn't work for me. 4 healthy guys can added up to that. Just will wait to see what she has.

You are correct, the Tundra failed the IIHS offset crash test. In any given accident the mechanics of the accident, such as speed, impact point etc. affect the outcome in terms of injury and survival. Toyota needs to pay attention to Ford safety engineering and copy the model, since they’ve already tried coping the Raptor. People pay attention to IIHS.

 

Man, if I lived in a place where those reinforced barriers kept jumping out in front of me while I was accelerating, that'd be a real bitch. I'd move.
