I have a 2017 1794 and am just starting to modify. I can get a pretty decent trade-in to buy a 2021 1794, but it will mean sticking with the stock setup for a while longer... what would you do, spend your money on mods or a new truck... can't do both? While demand for used is high, new prices are higher so funds for mods are eaten up in the upgrade.

Now that's a tough question. Not sure what I would do. Probably mods to the old one but maybe not.

I’m rollin with my 2017. 56k miles and paid off makes for a healthy mod / play budget.

Trying to figure out before I do my own mods
No doubt! Still gotta get rid of the chrome… and basically the truck is the same with some subtle differences, newer parts, and higher monthly payment …I thought about doing the same until I realized the truck pretty much looks the same

Solid points... looking way more forward to the mods than a bigger payment.

I was in the same spot until about a week ago. I also have a 2017 with 58k on it. I was going to get a 2021 figuring the current engine will be gone. I came to the conclusion that a paid off truck with low miles is way better than the same truck with payments and no miles. As others have said it's the same truck. I'm going to do suspension, wheels and tires. Who knows maybe I'll get the 2022. Stick with your current truck.

I made a similar decision when I picked up mine... Have a slightly older truck that is the same mechanically, with no payment and money to do all the mods I wanted to right off the bat, or get a slightly newer truck, with some cosmetic differences, with a payment and no mod money. Its a Toyota, at 56k miles it's basically brand new... Mod the current truck!

Rather than buy new, I chose to do the mods to my 2016 1794 with 32,500 miles. For me, I enjoy working on stuff and it was a great learning experience doing all the mods myself:

Your truck has a trans cooler and none of the TSS stuff....that would make me want to keep it vs buying a new one.

I guess the question is why do you want to jump to a 21' model? There isn't much difference between 17' and 21' Unless you just want to start fresh with low miles

Perhaps trade if you are tired of sunset bronze mica. Wind chill pearl and army green are nice.

Again - what are you “gaining” going to a 2021 vs what you have ?

TSS stuff - to most it’s at best a break even, no real value.

I know there were some minor cosmetics changed in 2018 on SR5 - not sure if 1784 got them a year earlier or not.

Warranty/ToyotaCare - to me these are not big value adds - can buy comparable warranties even on a 2017.

It comes down to what are you giving up and what are you getting - if you’ve got 60k or under on a 2017 - I personally wouldn’t move up for more than 5-8k USD. 10 would be the MAX - as that’s going to be the point at which the 2021 would maintain value on a similar level to the 2017 (both will depreciate next 5 years - assuming the 2017 is worth 45k now and the 2021 is 55k..in 5 years you might be at 30 and 40k respectively) - again based on 60k miles or less and 4x4.

Mods won’t “add” value on par to their cost - but neither will moving to a 2021 for most people - even with higher than typical trades. It’s however you want to “waste” your money - me personally - if I was happy with the truck, I’d mod it to taste and make it more personal versus upgrade in years and lower miles and keeping a stock setup.

I did major MODs to my '07 in the last 1.5 years and still have more to do. I like not having a car payment and low insurance cost.

I’m just chiming in here and I too agree with keeping your current truck and doing your own mods to taste. Lots of luck to you!
