No.. I would assert that the thread is turned into a shitshow because too many people are acting like sixth grade gossipy petty snarky petulant girls.

Toyota is not dragging its heels it announced when it would release the truck and it's sticking to its timeline.

Sometimes you just get lucky. I was in the back seat of a 57 Chevy 2 door no-post that flipped, end over end, at about 45 mph. Three of us, none wearing seatbelts, got out of the car without a scratch. The 57 was totaled and my buddy had to part it out.

Regarding the current Tundra crash test ratings, those are based on the truck being smashed into a fixed, immovable barrier. It's a measurement of how well the vehicle manages forces commensurate with its own weight.
However, that doesn't mean a Tundra is generally unsafe, nor does it mean a 5 star TSP+ Civic is safer.

A new Civic gets great ratings, but if hit hard enough by a larger vehicle, the outcome can still be poor, due to weight disparity. Likewise, if a Tundra gets hit by a Civic, I'd rather be in the Tundra.

Sometimes, a big truck is safer, like if you're driving at city street speeds and someone head-on crashes into you at 60 in an Elantra.
However, sometimes a truck, any truck, is less safe... Such as if you get side swiped by the same Elantra on the freeway at 70, trucks usually go wildly out of control end up crashing spectacularly whereas a car would handle the situation better. Trucks carry a lot of weight and energy in a crash, which can sometimes make the situation worse.

Basically, the Tundra is safe enough in most kinds of accidents, but against a pole or an equally big or bigger vehicle that's where the current Tundra won't do well

We have owned Infiniti, Acura, and two Lexus, although all sedans, not SUVs. When my wife started shopping for a replacement for her 2013 ES she hated the looks of the new Infiniti and Acura. We ended up with a 2020 ES, which is fine with me. I think the interior styling looks really good. Super comfortable for long trips.

I think her real reason though was the service she gets from the dealer. She calls before bringing it in and they hook her up with whatever she wants to drive and they don't even ask her to put gas in it before returning it. A totally different level than the Toyota service I get, which isn't horrible.

Lots of good info there and it makes a lot of sense. However, the tests are best used to COMPARE vehicles under the same exact scenario, which the IIHS has deemed common. So the choice isn't between the Elantra and the Tundra or the city or highway, it's between the Tundra and any other 1/2 ton pickup truck. You can pick apart any statistic or test but you still need to trust the science. I see the same arguments with bullet tests in calibrated gelatin: "well, I wouldn't want to be shot with any of them" is a good point but I'll still take the bullet that performed much better to the one that didn't if I'm the one shooting it.

Excellent post and I agree excepting a couple philosophical and semantic thoughts.

Philosophical: We should always question science, not faithfully follow it.

Semantic: What did the pandemic do to our society that deleted everyone’s ability to just say “science” without adding an unnecessary “the” prefix?

“The science” is a pretentious phrase that has snuck into our collective vernacular. “The” is unnecessary 99.9% of the time.

Rant over. Probably deeper thoughts than most want to read on a truck message board.

    Why?

Just because one truck overheated near its rated limits doesn’t mean a different one will.

Well if you own an F150 PowerBoost you might expect that kind of performance.

If you own a current Tundra without a transmission cooler you might be able to not only enjoy an overheated engine pulling 10K up a steep 10 mile grade at 65MPH on a hot day, but also enjoy a wildly overheated transmission too.

Or maybe not, maybe Toyota designs a better cooling system.

I never said anything about the overheating issue the Ford had in this video. it was able to tow and be a daily driver. You'er the one looking at the negative. i'm optimistic Toyota will hit the mark on both.

Important information gets buried on this thread quickly, but here it is. Toyota has been on point for every vehicle mentioned in this picture.

So to answer your question Q4 of 2021. Historically Toyota has introduced the Tundra at the Detroit auto show but that seems to have turned into a multi-day event called Motor Bella which is September 21 through 26, but the public will only be welcome there from September 23 to 26.

    Chicago Auto Show. July 15-18.

Ah gotcha, I was unsure what your meaning was as it was kind of open ended.

That F-150 certainly had some strong suits. It was only 20 seconds behind a 3/4 ton diesel up the hill, and within a few 10ths of fuel consumption. Pretty impressive considering both were pulling the same trailer.

I would have liked to see better cooling performance from the Ford, but reality is that towing near the limit of a 1/2 ton is going to require the driver to operate differently if you want to be sympathetic to the equipment. Towing near max is something you should be doing on rare occasions with any truck, and a reasonable driver will take it easier in that situation.

I think the video was instructive on when it’s time to move up to a bigger truck as well.

The Ford did pretty good considering all the factors.
I'd like to see how the Chevy would do in the same conditions at full capacity (18,000 lbs)
