Hello all, I recently changed the motor and transmission mounts in my 2000 Tundra 4x4 due to the truck having 200,000 miles. I took the truck for a test drive and I now have a grinding/clunking noise that is only present when accelerating from a dead stop. The noise lasts for several seconds and then goes away. No noise at while cruising on the highway. I have verified that all of the hardware is tight on the mounts and there is clearance between the transmission and the truck body. I plan taking out the driveshaft and checking the u-joints and rear differential when I get off work today. Any input or other ideas is appreciated.

Is the fan hitting the shroud perhaps?

Can you isolate it a little better as far front or rear, on a safe street with door open and head out the door.

I think you should get to the driveshaft as planned first.

The fan is clear of the shroud.

It sounds like it is coming from the center or rear of the truck.

I ordered a new carrier bearing just in case.

Do all the obvious things first.. Crawl under the truck and grab the tail shaft of the trans and see how much movement you have. It should be very little or none. It seems something is binding/rubbing when the engine is under load, so check any and all hoses, brackets, mounts, wiring that might be touching the rotating assemblies in the drivetrain. U- joints don't normally make grinding sounds when they're bad. More of a clunking sound going between drive and reverse.
As far as the carrier bearing, that too would be more of a continuous growl noise. The carrier should have minimal lateral movements as well.
How is the rear differential? Any excess play?

    And welcome to the club!

I will check the differential today when I take off the driveshaft. I jacked it up yesterday and spun the rear tires by hand and there was no unusual noises. The axles did not have excessive play in the bearings. The noise only occurs under load from a stop.

So I am pretty sure I found the problem. Some of the bolts on the driveshaft were just barely touching the carrier bearing under load. I pulled the driveshaft and checked all of the u-joints, carrier bearing, and the differential pinion and tailshaft on the transmission...all were good. I reinstalled the driveshaft and now it looks like there is enough clearance around the carrier bearing. I am thinking it may have slipped or I could have nailed it with the floor jack while doing all the mounts. I will test drive it tomorrow to verify all is good. Thanks to all for the help
