Anyone know what the growl is when the engine is started. Sometimes it will do it after a week of sitting, sometimes the next day, sometimes it doesn't do it for weeks at time. I am not referencing the fan noise but it happens for a split second just as the engine races during start-up.

I made an account just to reply. My truck has the same thing, almost sounds like oil deprivation. I didnt care at first because it's a lease, with truck prices I am now looking at buying it out though.

I noticed it seems to be more prevalent when it sits on an upward and downward angle for long periods. Doesnt sound like it's great for the engine whatever it is. Only lasts about half a secons if that.

    Anyone know?

Is it like a loud rattling sound at the beginning of start up?

My 21 does this too. I no longer back my truck up my driveway because parked 'nose down' seems to make it occur more frequently.

It's a large part of why I'll be buying an extended warranty soon.

Did some research on this, and believe it or not, supposedly it's the ABS system doing some testing; more prevalent after sitting a while. Not sure how much I believe that, but I know guys with 200K+ miles on their Tundras doing the same thing, and they've never had one issue.

I've also heard that with some of the newer vehicles, what happens is that, due to the thinner oils and tolerances and such, immediately on startup, it's not quite as lubricated as it should be since the oil's drained out; and after a split second, oil's circulated and therefore no sound.

With that said, I've got a lifetime engine warranty from the dealership, so I'm good.

If you got a sudden bath in cold motor oil, would you not growl a bit? No really, I have a 21, backed on a slope, all is fine. Might want to go to more viscous oil. I run 5-30 Mobile one syn.

mine used to do it if it sat for over a week without being started. then one time it sat for three weeks and didn't do it. then last week it sat for 1 day and did it the next day. The growl is to fast to be ABS, at first I was thinking it was turbulence off the fan when the engine revs when first being started. I park mine on a slightly upward slope 98% of the time.

    Too many, but not enough....
5W-30. While my engine was not doing what you described and mine doesnt sit for more than a couple days, switching to 5W-30 quieted down my engine at startup dramatically.

funny because the 0w20 at start-up is thicker than 5w30 at operating temperature. Then again the noise is occurring on start-up. There are two different noises. Valve train rattle from lifters bleeding down (5w30 would help) and then the growling noise, rumble noise.

I park nose down on my driveway and I haven't noticed this... Running 0W-20 unless the guys at the stealership put something different in on my last oil change.

Mine 2020 TRD Pro with 29k just started the growl?? It is like when it starts a bobcat had its tail stepped on!!! Last less than a second, and seems intermittent.

My 21 just did this today. It has done it before and I’m 99% sure it’s has something to do with the ac or defrost. If I leave the ac on and shut the truck off and start it back up there next day/week it will make this sound. If I turn it off and shut the truck off and start it up the next day/week it does not make this sound.

Mine was the AC compressor or ac compressor belt slipping. If I wait to turn on AC until idle lowers no noise. This is after truck sits for a week.

This. I've been able to replicate the sound by leaving my AC on overnight and starting up in the morning. Turning off the AC before I shut the truck off prevents it.

Yep, mine does it as well. Leave the a/c on when the truck is shut off, it sits overnight and makes the noise at first start up. After that it doesn’t do it the rest of the day. I make sure I turn it off at night and haven’t heard it since.

Are you sure it's not the air pump? That's not exactly a growl though. I also remember my Tundra doing all the weird ABS noises when I would first drive away. I got used to it.

Different. ABS is very subtle noise compared to the AC grumble that is short but at start up. ABS doesn't do its thing until the truck is in drive and moving. The growl is at very start up and can be replicated.

Now that it is easily reproducible would you mind posting a video? I'm curious if we are talking about the same thing.

I, too, have heard "the growl" on occasion. However, I have not been able to replicate it on three mornings in a row now by just leaving the A/C on.

Get one of those remote noise finders Scotty is always using and pinpoint it.

Maybe mine is a different problem, but mine has done this since I purchased it straight off the lot. I have figured out it is the compressor when turned on. The belt must be slipping, but it sounds so much worse. I found another thread talking about this and from what I remember a couple guys brought it to the dealership to get it looked at and the techs said it was normal. I will try to find that thread and post it in here.

I don’t know how too post a video, but imagine ball bearing in the crankcase and the sound it makes, but only for a second or two.

Did you ever figure out what this was? My truck is making a crazy noise during the first startup of the day (doesn't happen on subsequent startups throughout the day) and appears to happen mostly when the truck is parked on the driveway at an upward/downward angle.

Not really, but I have the same thing when I park nose down over the weekend.

Someone commented here or somewhere else his truck had done it for its whole life, 200k or so. So I stopped worrying. I cant reproduce it consistently anyway.

If I had to write a recipe to do so. Park nose facing down hill for > 3 days and start. Doesnt happen every time.

Like @clarkritchie said, mine only does it when I leave the AC on overnight. It doesn't do it every time, more like during spring/fall when AC is only periodically used. The AC being on is the only commonality that I'm finding. I've never heard it without the AC being left on.
