Hi. Yesterday morning I got a message as I exited my driveway to check the gas cap. Pulled over, unscrewed it and screwed it back on with a couple extra clicks. Message went away. Weather getting hotter, don't drive the truck every day, chalked it up to something related to external temperature and pressure.

Today I go to run an errand and the Check Engine Light comes on.

Dealer isnt super close and convenient, huge PITA to have to bring it in.
Do I need an obd reader to check the code or is there a way to check it through the menus/screen interface?

Bought a new Toyota so I dont have to deal with quality problems. Very annoying.

Loose gas cap likely caused emissions code. Now you just need to verify and delete with scanner. Most auto parts stores will do for free.

You can try taking a little carb cleaner and spray in the spring/vent area while you move the spring a little bit. Clean the rubber gasket too and lightly lube it to make sure it is sealing. Check the tank's fill neck for dirt or burrs that might prevent the cap gasket from sealing against it.

Also, don't top off your tank when filling. That can cause evap system codes as well as other problems. When the overfill safety in the gas nozzle trips, resist the urge to "round up" to the next dollar or gallon.

If all this fails, get a new cap or, if under warranty, stop by the dealer and get a new one the next time you are near there. They're around 15 bucks. You normally don't have to erase the gas cap code if that is what it is; it generally resets itself if that is the real problem.

Went to Harbor Freight and got a cheap reader.

    Got codes:
P0441 - Evaporative Emission System: Incorrect Purge Flow
P0455 - Evaporative Emission System: Leak Detected (large leak)

Sounds like it might be gas cap related. I'll do a search and see what I can learn on these codes.

Yeah brand new 2021 Tundra. Info on codes says it could be a variety of things but gas cap is a easy cheap thing to try and more often than not the cause.

Easier for me to order and replace gas cap than schedule a service apptmt. So will try that first. Sounds like truck is fine to drive w/these codes. If it doesnt clear up with new cap I'll bring it in.

Thank you for restating the title. Perhaps your keen powers of observation can deduce its a Tundra....possibly made by Toyota.

I just had P0441 but for entirely different reasons. The seal on the cap sounds like your culprit.

Ordered OEM cap from a dealer on Amazon. Should be here by end of the week. Tried a little oil on the cap seal in the meantime.

Just an update to this issue. Relaced the gas cap and deleted the codes this weekend. After a couple of short trips I got the "check gas cap" warning on the screen today. Assume the check engine light will come back on with a little more driving.

So... not resolved. Will have to bring it to the dealer. I hope whatever the problem is they can identify and fix it quickly.

Did you end up using an OEM cap, or an aftermarket?

Another update on this. Dropped truck at the dealer yesterday. They called me end of day and looks likely to be rodent damage. He said if so, will not be covered under warranty. Also said it will be expensive (great).

They are going to do a "smoke test" and I should find out the damage today.

Very frustrated. Lots of critters around my NH home, but never had any of them try to eat my car in the driveway. I guess if it is rodents, I hope the damage is limited to whatever pipe they chewed on related to the emissions and they havent gotten into any wiring etc.

That sucks. I hope it’s not rodents.

There is a some sort of U connector near the gas cap that was chewed through but no other damage noted. So, better than it could have been. Hopefully just 1 rogue critter / one time. I will do some research on repellant sprays and such to prevent future damage.
