Transmission drain and fill

Just looking for some opinions on draining the transmission and refilling.

The truck has 123k miles on it and my guess would be that it’s never been changed. My first question is should I do it now or is it too late ? Also if I’m just doing the drain and fill should I just go back with the world standard ATF ? I would assume it’s not advised to mix fluids. I’d also do the rear diff at the same time any recommendations on fluid for it ? Thanks

 

Hi. There are many many threads on this. In summary, they will say this… drain and fill only with that mileage if it hasn’t been done before(don’t power flush with one of those machines at the quick change or dealer). Use Toyota ATF. Use Valveoline import ATF from Wally world if you are on a budget.

Rear diff: no budget use Toyota or amsoil. Budget, use super tech from the Wally World.

 

Rear diff: the quart bags of Valvoline synthetic gear oil are priced right at walmart, and the bag makes it easier to get in the diff rather than the tall bottle.

As for the atf, I agree with above and would do a drain and fill with Toyota WS. Might would put a few miles on it and do it again.

 

Sounds like the perfect time to do a fluid change. Both of the million mile tundie's had their atf changed at 120k intervals...

 

My recently purchased Sequoia has 127k, I added the transmission cooler and the fluid is not clean so I am doing a series of drain & fills with Amsoil signature in the morning.

 

I just saw those bags the other day. That is a great point! It would really help to have the flexible bag.

 

For the Front, Rear AND Transfer Case use Lucas Full Synthetic SAE 75W-90 Gear Oil. My '07 is running Great on it...........you will need 2 gallons and get a pump from Harbor Freight to "Get 'R Done".........

You will need a 1/2" drive 24 mm SIX point socket and a 10 mm Allen that can also be used on a 1/2" drive......here's a good video to help you along.

I also took a VERY LARGE chisel to hit the front case fill plug 2 times to loosen it up........make sure you wire brush all the 24mm drain and fill nuts AND clean out the 10mm Allen plug too with a wire brush and a screw driver. All sockets and the Allen need to be fully seated to remove these plugs.

 

The Amsoil bags made the job so much easier, I'll never buy another fluid not in a bag if possible.

 

Lets say I plan on draining the pan and then refilling what comes out with amsoil would I be ok to mix amsoil with what I would guess is the Toyota WS?

 

Looking forward to using the bag my next time. Using the pump was so tedious, maybe a spoonful each pump stroke.

Looks like it comes with the same pointy spout end as the bottle. I’ll maybe want to adapt a small length of hose to the spout.

I certainly hope so as I just did that.

My first 4.5 was WS I had left over from a Camry I sold before doing the D&F on it, second Amsoil signature.

 

I used hose & a spigot. I ran the hose from the engine compartment to the fill hole.

 

Is amsoil worth the money ? Is it a noticeable difference when driving ?

 

With the discount, I paid 13.xx per quart.

The truck feels better but I'm guessing with 9 new quarts of any proper fluid it would have.
