    Fellow Tundra owners

I bit the bullet and had the TRD Pro exhaust system installed on my 2021 TRD Sport. LOVE IT. Good tone & not too over bearing. I know there are other systems out there that are lower in price but I just felt the need to "keep it in the family".

    Be safe out there!

I’ve been happy with mine. It seems to “settle” a little after a few thousand miles - I don’t notice the choppy “whomping” (helicopter) at certain RPMs that would be there when I first got it. Now it just makes me smile whenever I get on it.

How much does it cost? And, how does it compare it a Borla exhaust? Or, is just another exhaust that performs similarly to all other exhausts? Sorry for all the questions, looking to replace my factory exhaust on my 2021 Platinum.

Whatever this forum told me to do
I got the TRD exhaust as well.

    no complaints.

it's grumbly on acceleration & quiet on cruise.

The hardware was about $1100 and dealer installation was $414 (went this route to keep my warranty intact).

I just installed mine this past weekend, and I’m glad I made the change. I bought it from BAM Wholesale Parts for $957+ shipping ($75).

$414 for installation? damn... you got robbed. it takes maybe an hour to install.

you could have installed it yourself and not impacted your warranty in anyway.

i can understand if you wanted someone else to install it, but it should be a reasonable labor charge. maybe $100?

Mechanics can’t make any money charging $100 to install exhaust systems. Gimme a break. $400 ain’t bad at all…

A labor rate of 100-120/hr is normal shop rate. With access to a lift, an hour is pretty reasonable to install the system. At home crawling under takes way longer

Dude... it is a simple bolt on item. An experienced mechanic with a lift and tools on hand could knock that out in an hour. I installed that same system in my driveway and it only took me a couple of hours, but I was laying under the truck trying figuring everything out and taking pictures during the install:
TRD dual exhaust - detailed installation | Toyota Tundra Forum (tundras.com)

Here is an article that compares the labor rates for auto mechanics:
❤️ Auto Repair Labor Rate Per Hour ❤️ (cashcarsbuyer.com)

For dealers, the labor rate is $95-$125 per hour. Based on your $414 installation, you were charged for at least 3.3 hours of work. I do think that you were overcharged. But, it is your truck. You can do with it and pay for it how you want. In the end, that $414 will be nothing compared to the money that you will spend on additional mods. It's all good :)

I had no issue with the labor cost especially being done by a local Toyota shop. Being 100 degrees in Houston, tit was worth the $414 charge to avoid the heat the the mosquitoes! Looking in the Ranch Hand Summit Bullnose front bumper next!

    Be safe out there gentlemen.

Yes. They take care of me. I have thrown them a lot of business, I dont expect huge discounts and free shit but they take care of me, so I keep going back.

It was also the 2nd system I had installed there, along with 2 lifts on two trucks, tires, oil changes, skid plate and cat theft deterrent plate installed and 4 tundras since 2013. Yes I trade that often.

It seems the TRD system is a love it or hate it situation. I love mine.

Thank you! I wasn’t sure how to describe the “whomping” sound but I think that describes it just about right. The sound is actually bugging me and gets annoying when cruising at 50-55 for long periods. I’m at about 600 miles on mine right now. Hopefully it disappears

I’m at 18,xxx miles and I still have the drone/whomp sound. Cannot say it has gotten better or worse, but it’s only really noticeable when I’m towing.

My tundra must have came with sound deadening. Lol. I had no issues with any kind of droning sound inside my Pro when the wife and I went end of May to OBX. Cruising on the highway 70-75. She even said this thing sounds awesome. Maybe we are use to the sound because all my corvettes were loud. The nice thing with my 19 Z06 I can make it loud and put it in Stealth mode to quite it on the highway doing 75-80.

The drone sound seems to be most noticeable at 1500-1700 rpms which is where the rpms seem to be while cruising 55-60 with no load on the engine

Yeah I still don’t think it’s bad at that speed. And I had a really good range of speed on our trip. My Pro only has 1600 miles on it. It’s got along way till it’s broken in the exhaust. I’m fine if mine stays just the way it is. Now if you want to here hate drive a 4runner Pro with the TRD exhaust. I did not mine it but a lot of guys don’t like it. That’s coming out of a V6.

Yes, 50-55 and in the right RPM range early on and it had me second guessing myself and looking at options. I don’t recall exactly when I realized it wasn’t there anymore, but I’m almost 14k miles now and sometimes I “try” to listen for it and don’t hear it.

I’ll chime in here. My ‘21 TRD Pro has just over 2K mikes on it and it def has the noticeable wa-wa-wa drone at around 1500-1700 RPM. It’s not terrible, but I’d appreciate if it didn’t do that. Other than the minor audible annoyance it’s not great for my gas mileage because I just punch it to get out of that RPM range hehe.

Some owners have have said they have had a cross pipe added towards the front of the system that eliminated that sound

I have never noticed it myself

Been there, done that. It does eliminate the helicopter sound, but it also changes the tone of the true dual exhaust. It's deeper and smoother, but loses the trademark throaty burble sound.
