If it makes you feel any better I don’t personally consider a comment towards myself or anyone else in regards to physical height as an insult. People come in all different sizes and shapes, and outside of professional athletics I’ve never considered being tall as particularly advantageous. In fact having witnessed the health issues of my wife’s uncles who are all 6’5”+ I am happy being only 5’10”.

 

I care a huge amount about MPG, it’s my number 1 complaint about my 2016.

These forums a bit artificial because they represent enthusiasts, not your average pickup buyer. Most people on here are probably younger, live in suburbs, and spend more money on accessories than fuel for their trucks. These trucks are more toys to them than tools. Their trucks likely get looked at more than driven.

Then there’s the rest of use that need a truck for our daily driver and live in rural areas so we put a lot of miles on one just getting back and forth to town. If you drive 7K miles a year fuel mileage might not be a big deal, at 40k it is. It’ll become more so if gas hits $4 a gallon.

Most guys like this aren’t on these forums but they’re out there and they care about fuel mileage. Toyota lost a lot of Tundra sales because they took so long to address the awful gas mileage.

 

That’s because a lot of people that buy a truck either don’t need a truck at all and want to look cool or they just need a basic truck and don’t care about all the extra stuff which the 2.7 fits the bill perfectly

The thing is until Ford came out with the PowerBoost all gas half tons were reasonably close in fuel mileage, real world driving. If you could be gentle then the EcoBoost could get good fuel mileage, but for most of us we get within 3 mpg between the Tundra and a 3.5 EB. Ford does something very similar to what VW did with EPA ratings - the ratings are done in such a specific manner they tune the engine and gears to be max fuel efficient during those tests. It is very hard to match EPA ratings on a 3.5 EB, while it is very easy to get better mileage than the EPA rating in the Tundra. I'm hoping Toyota continues this trend that they actually get what they are EPA rated at while doing real world driving.

All these guys worried about mpgs in the trucks are why we are getting glorified cars for pickups and why most who actually use a truck have moved onto our will move onto 3/4ton trucks.

My tundra was the softest suspension truck I have ever owned and it also had the most squat. I'm afraid with them chasing this "soft ride" and adding coils in the rear it's going to be squatty again.

I’m one who is worried about MPG. I have a 3/4 ton dodge diesel also, along with a Camry for keeping the mileage off of both. People that don’t drive much are OK with a 15 mpg pickup. Those of us who actually use them do care about fuel mileage. As it is now if I need a couple of 2x4’s from Lowe’s I can take the Camry and hang them out the window like a redneck or take the Tundra and spend $25 in gas. I’d prefer being able to take the truck without the crazy fuel bill.

None of this matters if the Tundra sits in the drive getting its wheels polished. For those of us that drive them 15 mpg matters. BTW my 3/4 ton get much better mileage.

 

Hey if you can afford lumber right now, you can afford fuel.

I wont pull an of the data again, but the delta between Fords V8 and the Ecoboost motors on Fuelly was an average of 1-3 mpg in favor of the Ecoboosts.

Given the cost of maintenance on a boosted truck, typically more frequent oil changes, eventually turbo replacement, etc the cost savings is essentially non existent. In short a boosted motor would need to see a real world MPG increase of closer to at least 5 MPG to produce any savings that would help, at least 10 MPG increase to eventually cover the cost of a turbo.

The average American drives about 12k miles a year, 15 MPG vs 20 MPG would save about 600ish a year. Its truly marginal, hate to be that guy but if saving 50-100 a month in gas will make or break you, then well...

If everything is totally reliable from Toyota, then it really doesnt matter though, at least then you save a couple pennies in the long run. Cant really say that about Fords Ecoboosts.

 

True, but it still doesn’t mean I want to spend it on fuel. I’d rather have a ribeye and good beer than spend $80 to fill my truck line I just did.

 

What does $80 buy in lumber right now? Maybe 4 8’ studs?

 

Saving in the long run also means the owners have to keep the vehicles long term, and most don’t.

 

For some reason, I like it a lot less.

 

Another items to add to my wish list (which includes rear locking diff and TRD package for extended cab truck, or at least a long bed CC TRD):
-AWD. Puhlease, for the love of God, trucks with lots of torque need AWD option for places like where I live. I hate having to select 4HI on patchy road conditions or baby the ever living piss out of the accelerator. It's my #1 reason for wanting a new truck, and I hope Toyota could finally see to adding it, as an option, finally.

 

I'm sure they can do progressive coils a lot more effectively than what leaf springs can do, so that should help with both ends of being 'soft' unloaded but stiffen up when the truck gets loaded down. Pair that with some fancier shocks and it is possible to be decent at both unloaded and loaded.

I lifted a newer Ford Ranger yesterday and that thing came with a single leaf “pack” with overload. Blew my mind.

But yea, all the people that daily trucks is why we keep getting cries for fuel efficiency. For me I keep the truck aside for when I need it.

 

Ya Turbo 4 Tacoma would be cool too, but a 6 cylinder turbo would better for me and looks like the 2021 tacoma only has a 5 foot bed???Bummer if its only 5 foot bed, and adding too my wish list to make it better a 6 foot bed on the Tacoma would be great too!!!

 

As far as I’m concerned Toyota should enjoy economies of scale and offer the V35A-FTS in the 4Runner and Tacoma when those both come out. No one would cry about that, and they would sell every one they could build.

 

I bought my current truck 12+ years ago, has about 90K on it. For a few years, we were only putting 5K/yr on it. It is strictly used when we need it, rarely for tooling around. We have cars for daily driving. Even with the insurance costs, we still prefer to have multiple vehicle.

Detuned, smaller displacement and/or single turbo would be some options also. BTW the Tacoma does have LB options, my neighbor has a new DC LB in that concrete color with a canopy on it, looks great! Just the right size for us, but I have driven these trucks before and they are dogs, I couldn't imagine road-tripping in a laden 3.5 Tacoma through the mountains....yech!

 

Yet today's trucks are way more capable than they ever where in the past. Just because they drive better now, doesn't mean they aren't as capable.

Saving 50-100 a month isn't a make or break for me, but why burn money if you don't have to? He'll I haven't gotten a $100 a month raise in about 6 years, saving $100 a month in fuel is the same thing as getting a raise.

 

New trucks get a bad rap, seem less capable, because people spend so much money on them, they seem to be less inclined to use them as traditionally intended, working and playing hard. People can't fathom scratching their $55-$80K+ truck.

As for MPGs, of course choosing a truck with better MPGs only works out if you really need a new truck to begin with. Selling a slightly older one for a newer one will usually lose money for a long time. And, if you haven't received a $100/mo raise in years, it may not be time to be thinking about $50K+ trucks. I feel you on that last one, though, my cost-of-living-adjustments I get, which do equal about $100/mo after several years, are quickly buried in higher overall costs, like property taxes, insurance, etc, are all out-stripping my income growth too.
Makes the idea of a new truck less palatable, for me at least.

I would never buy a new truck in order to save gas, but when it's time to buy a new truck, I would like spend less on gas.
I'm a teacher, for the past 5 or 6 years, we've gotten about a $1200 a year raise, but by the time they take taxes and retirement out, we see about $50-60 a month raise each year.

 

Agreed on the intent when buying a truck.

At least for me, there would be no real savings for quite a while. Even with the high trade market, knowing nothing about the new cost but assuming its a little higher than current, and sales tax, a purchase would set me back at least 3-4k. Likely more.

It would take years of gas savings to catch up with the initial loss.
