Adams products are generally not sh!t, so I'm doubting that is the issue. I'm unfamiliar with that coating, but if there is a cure time, perhaps he attempted the 2nd coat too soon? Of the reviews I've seen of this coating, very few are written after 6 months. There are several, however, that do not give a positive review as it pertains to longevity. Did he take it out into the sun after the first coat?

Well idk what caused this but honestly it sounds like user error at some point. What was time in between coats? Ceramics can not be stacked at least cquartZ. You can add a second coat within one hour of the first coat. Also he may have let it sit to long waiting for the magical flash! I am not a fan of this descriptive term for coatings. Kinda like green flash and sunsets. It does not help a first time user determine the right time to give it a wipe down. I would call it oil or rainbow. But all that aside he is in this boat and needs to figure out how to fix it. Worst case scenario is that he gonna have to do the whole process over again including clay and polish with a machine to get that coating off his truck. At that point I would switch from Adam’s. I have no experience with their coatings.

It doesn't sound like it. It sounded like he left it in the garage and put another coat on it before bringing out in the sun

I’ve done that many times without issue. Avoiding the surfaces to get to hot before a second coat.

i believe so. but i think that's why he was tapping into my lil bit of knowledge cuz he found out it was my first time on my 2 vehicles and didn't have issues at all

I agree! Or he layered it improperly. I would recommend to him removing and replacing with a more well know/reviewed coating using a decent detailers light and having someone with experience help/show him the process.

He said when he brought it out and saw it, he pulled it back in and polished it back off then sprayed with the ceramic wax he had. It looks fine when I see it at work. Doesn't have really any swirls or anything. But I do believe it was just user error. Having the bad lighting in the garage he wasn't able to remove at the proper flash time and/or he was trying to possibly coat the whole vehicle too much surface at one and when he tried to level it, it was too late.

Bad lighting is a major factor. I have good lighting in my garage and still sometimes when I pull a vehicle out in the sunlight Ill find a high spot or two. First time using a ceramic coating and bad lighting = bad results. I'm not familiar with the Adams because to me they are the same Chemical Guys... garbage for the most part (except for 1-2 products). With that said, no matter what coating, if you have bad lighting, you'll get high spots.

New to proper detailing and making the jump to to finally correct the paint on my Tundra. The paint is pretty rough. It had plenty of swirls from the dealer and i added plenty of damage to the paint removing the pinstripes with an adhesive eraser wheel. It also has a lot of largely superficial pinstripes from being offroad.

    This was my general plan:
    1. Strip with Dawn/wash
    2. Mother's Clay Bar System
    3. 3D One compound/polish with a Uro fiber pad
    4. 3D One Poxy

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Like the 3d one products a lot. Switch your soap to something proper after you do the correction and seal.

I've a black truck as well and used 3d one and white lakecountry pads which are considered a heavy polishing pad. I tried at first with the orange pads which are a light cutting pad and it left quite a haze on the paint so that's why I went with white softer pads, wanted one trip around. My truck was fairly new and not in too bad a shape though. You may want to consider trying a softer foam pad before the uro fibre in case it's enough.

Appreciate the advice. Do you have a suggestion for a decent foam pad? Can a foam pad be also used for wax application or is there another option thats better?

Edit: Saw you suggested the lakcountry pads, ill take a look at those. Thanks!

Only things I can think of are user error (like not having a pristine surface to begin with, not buffing off well enough, or not enough time between coats), or a bad product (maybe even just a bad batch). While I’m not a fan of Adam’s, it’s mostly because of what I see as intentional false advertising. Most of what I’ve used of theirs has been at least average. They generally have decent products, though some are overpriced. I feel that they’ve drifted a little towards the CG philosophy, but overall they are of a higher quality.

While I’m not sure exactly why this happened to him, this is one reason why I’m not a huge fan of ceramic coatings. The reward is just not worth the risk in my opinion. Way harder to correct errors with ceramic than with other sealants. I know I’m in the minority, but I really don’t see any advantages to coatings.

    This is my thoughts exactly.

I didn't see a buffing/removing step in @Fotnot 's neighbors steps. After it rainbows you have to remove it. Is that what he did, or did he just leave it and then re-apply another coating on top of it?

I'm almost positive he let it flash then leveled it. I didn't pry too much cuz he seemed kinda embarrassed about it (I could understand that). But said when it didn't look right in sun, he went back in the garage and buffed it off with the DA. I'm still leaning towards his flash time came and he kept doing another panel or something. Hard to say for sure without a walk down of EVERYTHING done

Well there is a lot of reasons not to be embarrassed when doing a first time coating. Things happen and it’s not permanent. Hopefully he got it corrected and life is good. When I did my very first coating I did one panel complete just to make sure I was on the right track.

he buffed it off with the DA then used Adam's spray ceramic i think he said. truck still looks good(for a cRaptor:rolleyes:). But I think that scared him from coatings.
I went all in with the confidence of Ron Jeremy and did the whole vehicle:muscleflexing::laugh:

Alright, I know we don't like chemical guys, I was gifted the chemical guys kit that was in the prime day deal. Is there any items I should definitely not use? I've tried the quick detailer but I think I applied to much because even with switching cloths it still doesn't buff out completely. Looked good until it took my truck to work and now you can see all my wipe marks so I might stop using that.

Any wax or sealant on your truck before you used the quick detailer? Some products don't mix well with others. Did you apply in the hot sun? Yes, you could have applied to much and without good lighting you were unable to see the results until the nice sun showed them for you. Chemical guys is Meh, IMO

The truck was coated with a sport ceramic a couple months ago, did it at night so truck was cool but I did not have good lighting. I figured chemical guys wasn't worth the money but it was on sale and I didn't pay for it so as long as it won't cause harm I'll use it until it's gone. I will also be using the foam cannon on my next wash tomorrow.

Might be that the chemical guys quick detail doesn't bond well with the ceramic, but who knows. When I use a wax or sealant I try to stick to that brand's line for quick detailers, wash soap etc.

I would only use the maintenance products from that line, like the ceramic pro after care and whatever they recommend for washing. I'd be curious if the dealer did a proper paint correction and prep before applying.
