As far as I'm concerned I'm blind when it comes to this issue. I am literally never going to look. If it's bad enough I will see oil on the ground or smell oil burning.

your better off. I made the mistake of looking and have a very little leak. literally a hanging drop that never falls. And it really bothered but I am over it now, I do look occasionally though

I am right there with you. I notice a drop today when I looked. Just cleaned it up with engine degreaser and wiped it down. Been to the dealer and they said no leak but obviously there is a seep. Oh well guess I’ll wait until next oil change and see it it gets worse. I wonder if anyone has tried to apply some extra sealant to the same area, after cleaning it up to see if that holds?

Unfortunately, my blissful ignorance is over. I took my 2018 to my local Toyota mechanic to look at the driver's side and they told me to have Toyota fix it. It's leaking enough now that it's about to get "smelly." 19,415 miles. Passenger side is dry, but the service manager at Toyota already said he'd seal both sides while under the knife.

So it goes. I'm waiting to schedule the appointment until after camping season. I never would have known about this issue if not for this place, but in my case, maybe it's better to know than not know.

Had my 2013 resealed today both sides. Feels good to know it’s fixed for now at least. Truck is running just the same. Repaired under extended warranty but cost would have been $3k.

That’s awesome. I am contemplating getting an extended warranty since my power train expires in 5000 miles or at the end of this year whatever comes first. Just don’t want to pay monthly payments on a warranty for a couple of years now that my Truck is paid off. Ugh decisions……

I’ve got to admit there’s a part of me that hopes to see the oil seeping out before my warranty expires.

Weird thing is my passenger side cam tower is bone dry; However, my driverside FIPG material appears shiny or wet in appearance when I shine a flashlight on it. Took it to dealership and they stated no leak, but can’t be normal to be. I am thinking about spraying some good degreaser or brakeleen on it to hopefully dry the area and check back on it after a week. Anyone have suggestions on the best approach on the best option to dry up this area? Wasn’t sure if brakeleen would cause any damage to the sealant or not. Thanks.

I would not do an extended warranty if your only concern is the cam tower. Worst case is cam tower is $3kish, and best case is Toyota may just take care of it no cost or reduced cost. An extended warranty may cost almost as much as a cam tower repair. Put what you would have spent on warranty into a cam tower investment account .

I noticed a tear in the FIPG on the driver side cam tower area just prior to the rear of the block. Should I be concerned it will leak or it it just excess from install? Thanks in advance.

To me that looks like excess tearing away, possibly from a pressure washer or some such. It does not appear to be leaking at present, the best that you can do is to keep an eye on it.

Thanks, I was wondering if the excess ripping away there was prelude to an imminent leak.

The photo that you posted is the first that I've seen behaving that way. I haven't noticed that peeling away occurring in other photos where there were obvious, questionable, or probable leaks. Eyes peeled...

I’m not a mechanic, but that looks like a crack that started on the outside. If a failure started on the inside and pushed its way out to crack the sealant on the outside of the block, I’d expect to see oil seepage. Since it is still clean, I think you are good.

At a minimum for my ocd ... would put some jb weld or other good epoxy to keep tear from getting worse.

You appear to have a 2020 and there are several sites that indicate Toyota made changes in 2018 to cam towers thus reducing or eliminating leaks. I’m new to Toyota so please know it’s just an inquiry and I’m only repeating what I read and NOT trying to state it as fact. Thanks

I know you're just repeating what you read, but I'm curious to see where it says they made any changes to the design. Do you have any links? Just very hard to believe Toyota finally decided to do something about it (which they still deny is even an issue) in the final two model years.

Good question and certainly fair. I’ve been just perusing the internet and read other forum opinions a belief (perhaps more of a case of wishful thinking) of a possible change in sealant compound made in the past several years reducing the leaking. There was even a law firm seeking participation in a Class Action but limited participation to pre 2018 owners. I’ll remain optimistic that maybe there’s a shred of truth as it certainly doesn’t make sense Toyota would continue to build these engines knowing they are having an ongoing issue with sealant.

Not sure if this helps, but lots of 2020 owners and some 2021 owners are reporting the leak.

    Here on this thread.

Links? Not sure I’ve seen any 2020 or 2021 in this thread with the leak. About the latest year we are seeing is 2018 so far

Did you read the entire thread?

I won’t go thought the entire thread looking for what I read months ago.

I just randomly chose page 80 and got some hits.

If you read every page, you will find lots of 2018+ trucks with reported leaks.

Thanks for the links. I had skimmed through a good portion of this after I bought mine and hadn’t seen much outside of 2018 or older. Does look like a few are starting to pop up

Seems like pretty good odds you won’t have a problem when you compare number of Tundra’s sold to volume of issues on Forums like this. Certainly I realize a small percent of people are Forum members etc but still seems like good odds?

I think that there are pretty good odds you will develop the leak at some point. I have had two Tundras, both with the leak, and my buddy who has a Tundra also has the leak. So just among the people I actually know who have owned a Tundra, we're at a 100% leak rate. I get three is a small sample size, but if it's truly a rare occurrence, I'll let you do the math as to how unlikely it is that both of my Tundras and his Tundra all have the leak. It's simply a design flaw, and it's bound to start leaking at some point. It's the same thing with the pre-2016 Titans. Nissan had a poor design on the exhaust manifolds for the 5.6L engine, and it was basically a matter of when it would finally crack. Just a design flaw that was destined to fail.

I think many of the people claiming they don't have it haven't actually even looked—they just don't see it dripping on the ground so they assume they don't have it.

Yes I agree you have a small sample size but it’s certainly a concern. I can’t help you with the math as unfortunately I’m not that smart. I respect the case you make and perhaps I’m being too optimistic. You think “many people claiming they don’t have a leak have not actually looked”. This seems suspect to me as it’s such an easy inspection process I can’t imagine having any sense of confidence in no leak without spending two minutes to look for the oil. I’m not sure if your “design flaw” comment is referring to the Nissan or Toyota. If it’s the Toyota what is the design flaw? Seems a question as to any difference in gray vs black sealant? One Forum comment indicated the volume of sealant was an indicator: Sealant oozing out leads to leak as it’s squeezed out thus preventing proper seal. Not oozing out is a good thing as proper amount is providing proper seal resulting in no leak. Time will tell and it’s sure an unfortunate and frustrating situation. Good luck!!

This is a community of enthusiasts but how many people out there care that much about their vehicles? I check my cam tower seals and my oil and take a general look under my hood every time I gas up but I have never seen anyone else doing that in my life.

I wonder what my neighbours would do if I snuck up to their Tundras with a flashlight to look at the cam towers... :monocle:
