To bad it's almost been a year from debut and they still aren't available. Had one reserved for the wife for months and now I have a 21 JLU Rubicon in my garage.

To make the grab handle be available and still get 5 star ratings would have required an all new cab design, basically from the front wheels to the rear wheels would have had to be re-worked to keep the impact forces low enough on the occupants and the A-pillar from deforming too much. Getting rid of the handle was a much cheaper and easier way to gain the safety rating

I’m not understanding you. Are you saying that using the handle weakens the A-pillar? I thought they deleted it because of the air bag, not because it compromises the structural strength of the A-pillar. The mounts for the handle are still there…

Also, I was unaware that the 2nd gen (and 2.5 gen) Tundra gets 5-star ratings.

No, the handle does not weaken the pillar. In crash tests with the normal deformation of the pillar, the dummies hit the handle with their heads. Removing it was definitely easier than redesigning the handle and doing new molds. Molds are CRAZY expensive, so if it's not a long term money generator, it would not be worth it. Deleting the handle didn't hurt Tundra sales, so it's a win in all but minor convenience.

Nothing to do with the airbags. If it were the airbags then the handle would have been dropped in the Sequoia as well. My guess is that the added ass of the Sequoia changes the dynamics of the crash and the dummies do not hit the handle, so it was kept in.

I am short. I just stand up on my sliders before exiting. I don't need a handle so I don't worry about it.

Lol not even close. Take the wheel wells and everything past the a-pillar=Nearly identical to a GMC Sierra.

and the blatant interior copy of the raptor steering wheel. Cmon Sweers. Be original.

Why? If you can make something like the raptor, but remove the ford drama (real or imagined) and replace it with the Toyota legend (real or imagined) why wouldn't you? How many guys here have said that they want Toyota to give them something like the Raptor in the TRD Pro, but with Toyota reliability?

    Just stuff to think about.

I definitely see AT4 sheet metal outline on the outside, but not a blatant copy, and I think that is a good thing.

But, that interior shot of the steering wheel...WTF is up with that? Toyota looks like that new friend that turns out to be a crazy stalker. First, they like your new jacket, and the next day shows up at your house wearing the same freaking jacket -TTV6. Next thing you know, they are using the same phone case as you (Raptor steering wheel). It is getting kind of creepy.

At a quick glance without paying attention to any actual detail they look similar. But they are nothing alike. The grille shape and headlight shape are not the same at all. The way the front of the hood meets the grill is different, the hood is a different shape, the fenders are completely different and the fog lights are in 2 different places. There both white and black and thats about all thats the same.

People saying it looks just like "x" truck i feel like tried to put the square in a triangle hole on there playset as a kid.:D

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
But they’re both white! With black trim around the wheel arches. They both have round tires! ROUND! Clearly a copy.

Both have gigantic grilles! Huge unsightly things that look like a gaping maw, or a fish mouth.

Toyota really screwed this design up, along with all the other truck makers. I think all the current Tundra owners will agree, especially 2021 owners, that a huge grille is just bad. Very bad. It would be far better for the 2022 to have a 250hp engine, that way Toyota wouldn’t need big radiator(s) for the air to water intercooler, and engine coolant. Then they could use a tiny grille, and that would be better to have less cooling; because if the 2022 ends up being loads better than the 2021 they just bought, then that means they might have made a mistake.

The line is a sporty/off road thing to know where your wheels are quickly - Yes the entire steering wheel is quite obvious to see if your wheels are square, but the stripe has the cool factor. Raptor is the first truck to get it, but far from the first vehicle to get it.

When something is purely cosmetic then it's annoying to see copied, but when there's actual function (V6TT and stripe) or legal (5 amber lights - still to be confirmed to be required) then why not copy a good design.

I agree. Toyota is definitely not above reproach, but this is one of those situations where it's easy to be critical through the internet. It would be an enormous challenge for anyone to design a look that balances Toyota familiarity, aggression, functionality, limits of manufacturability, and ensuring enough change that people don't complain it's too similar to the current get - while - avoiding similarities to the other major truck manufacturers who are pushing the boundaries in their own regard.

Personally I think they've done a pretty decent good job at balancing all of those qualities. Hey, look at the all new F150, it looks like the previous gen with new headlight assemblies.

It goes without saying that looks aren't everything. Foundationally it has to perform competitively and reliably.

Methinks deletion of a grabhandle was to save a few dollars per unit. The passenger side has the same A-pillar but has a grabhandle. The Tacoma lost the driver side grabhandle also, still has the passenger side. Not a huge deal, the driver can use the steering wheel as a kindasorta grabhandle for ingress. The Sequoia was built in a different plant (TMMI) than Tundra/Tacoma and only ~13k units/yr so maybe they decided to just leave it in the Seq.

Same deal with deleting the aux trans cooler from the Tundra and Tacoma, save a few dollars per unit for the final production years and still "perform within expected operating specs" or whatever mumbojumbo Sweers spouted.

Toyota built a completely new Tacoma plant in Guanajato Mexico for $2 billion, plus retooled San Antonio to produce TNGA-F Tundras and Sequoias for about $1 billion. Saving $300 per unit for a few years at the end of the model cycle and charging the same MSRP offsets new investment.

I had to roll my eyes when I bought a 2012 Tacoma and went to open the passenger door with the key, there wasn't a key opening. Makes bizness sense I guess, how often would people use it or complain about it, and saving 20 bucks per unit adds up.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing the next gen Sequoia. This '19 is a roomy, versatile, multi-function beast but 5mpg more would be great.

Just talked to my local dealership owner… he sells a shit ton of Toyota vehicles and here’s his RUMOR:

The 3.5 won’t be quite ready for a fall release. He says there may be a very limited run of 2022s with the 5.7 v8, just so they can still have a 2022 model.

The part that worries me is that Sweers or someone at Toyota seems to be more interested in cutting their way to higher profit by cheating out on features. The grab handle, and transmission cooler being a couple of notable examples.

If this is the direction Toyota is taking with the 2022 then it’s a bad turn.

    Yeah. No.

Toyota is not going to spend the billion dollars it takes to stick the 5.7L in a truck not designed for it and then EPA and CARB cert it to sell for a few months.

    You buddy is wrong.

I don't think the passenger one has as much impact on ratings as the driver. Dummies still hit their heads on it yes, but there will be lots of times that the passenger seat so I don't know that it is weighed as heavily.

There have been much smarter people than me that have already explained that the new refrigerant mandated after 2018 would have made the 2018 trans cooler design not function properly. Yes, they opted to delete it instead of redesigning it, but I don't think they would have pulled the trans cooler from later MYs if they still functioned as designed.

Savings would be less than $300 per unit. You can get one yourself for a hair over that, and there is huge mark ups on price. It doesn't invalidate your point that small savings over large numbers of vehicles add up, but it helps to keep it in perspective. If they wanted to really save money, they could drop a whole trim line, save way way more, and not get questioned on their integrity about it.

This one I think is more for the aesthetics. It's also done by TONS of auto manufacturers.

Of course. The world is out to get you. Clutch to your fear.

They could save way more money with other deletions, but they don't do them. Wonder why. Could it be that both of those have perfectly reasonable explanations?:monocle:

Don't get me wrong, I would way rather have a cooler, and I will add one some day, but I also am willing to admit that I am an outsider to their industry. What customers do we all hate the most? The assholes that scream, yell, pout, throw tantrums, and all because they have no clue how the service/product/business they are sniveling about works.

You've got a CDL, right? Tell me, how much do your average car drivers know about the world of 80,000+ lbs missiles, but they sure will light you up and tell you how do drive one!

    A bunch
I highly doubt that - check out YouTubers who do engine swaps and there's a TON of work. The only way it would work is if they designed the new frame and accessories with the idea the old 5.7 and the new V6TT would be in very similar positions. And at that point it would need all new intakes and exhaust piping. It would be a huge cost for just a limited run.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
No CDL here LOL. My professional license is under 49 CFR Part 240/242, and has nothing to do with motor vehicle operations on public roads.

    Working on it!
Today's Toyota picture release...I spy JBL on the speaker grilles under the grab handles. Makes me shake my head a bit unless it is 50X better than it is in the current models.
