this truck has 300+ miles, it sat for a few years, but I picked it up, replaced the transmission, replaced the starter and it's been running fine since 2018, all of a sudden the engine noise volume has turned up considerably, almost like i modified the exhaust, hooked it up to diagnostic machine and getting several codes, replaced the vvt solenoids, but problem still persist, i'm an auto novice, just have done work by looking off of you tube etc. I'm trying to salvage the truck for my son who will be able to drive in less than a year any tips on what this my be?

You mention VVT solenoids, so I'm gonna assume this is a 2005-2006 model year. Check the secondary air injection system.

its an 04-05, i replaced them only because the auto zone after running there diagnostic machine suggested it, but i'll run a search o n what you suggested, it's sounds like a muscle car right now but it's burning more fuel and it can't be a good thing, any other suggestions?

Forgot to ask where you are located. Leaky exhaust would be minor. Giant rusted out hole in exhaust would give Nascar vibes.

Put a new gas cap on ($8-16 depending). They wear out over time. Had a EVAP Code and a new cap cleared it.

    Exhaust sound is probably rot.

I BBQ Painted my Old and New Exhaust. Tried patching the old and it lasted a little while. Found a 15 year storage’d brand new OEM last year. Felt some added torque with new gaskets and muffler. I’ve since replaced all the gaskets and have new Shorty Headers. All the old gaskets were gnar gnar and leaky except at the collector in front of the Cats. Resonator still looks and feels solid with but might be a matter of time on that.

I saw this thread earlier today and immediately thought, catalytic converter‘s are missing. But I didn’t want to jinx you. I’m getting my driver side replaced right now on the Sequoia because of thieves. Bastards

I kind of figured you would’ve noticed when you crawled underneath and said it all looked good LOL I know mine sounded pretty funny with just one bank missing I bet youro was really loud!

The other day I think I saw a thread on here regarding some catalytic converter skid plates to prevent theft.. maybe you need one depending on your neighborhood?

Now is a good time to make some hypermile modifications to your underbelly. Maybe thin aluminum could be riveted in and it would deter the thieves. It may also improve your mileage. Moving may be a better option.

Aluminum sells too. They'd cut it off and take it with the cats.

I respectfully disagree. I think they'd most likely pass on armored cats. I'm in a small mtn community, not much crime. However... there has been a huge spike in cat thefts within the last year. Denver and the front range is only about an hour and a half away. Unfortunately I think the thieves have begun to make evening trips up here to take advantage of us. Cops have busted a few but won't give vehicular chase if they run. They got one of my neighbors' cats last winter and caused over $2K damage to his wife's Honda in the process. Officer said that they can remove a cat (cordless Sawzall) in less than a minute... sometimes less than 30 seconds and typically sell for about $200. That's why I don't think they'll dick with armor to get to the prize, they'll just take a pass and pick an easier target if they possess a grain of logic. It's a game of stealth and speed. I'll probably shell out the $400 for the plate from 1st Gen Offroad since we can't shoot thieves here, not even with rock salt anymore. :(

I agree. My comment was made in jest regarding "thin" aluminum. My brain went super literal and I saw a sheet of soda can thickness in my mind.

Damn thieves. I'll bet it sounded awesome. My truck sounded great when I only had to repair this severed pipe before the muffler.

    Awesome gets tiring after awhile.
