Had a horrible trip to pigeon forge yesterday. Torrential rain, construction, and accidents caused a 6.5 hour trip to take 9.5 hours. However the tundra did fantastic, 10.1 mpg over 340 miles never missed a beat.

a did however start getting an intermittent short alarm on my brake controller. Still debating whether I want to dig Into the brakes while I’m here with limited tool, or wait till i get home.

Every time I needed them they worked, just would occasionally have the code flash up while driving. Maybe water was getting in somewhere it shouldn’t.

 

sorry to hear that about PF, Gatlinburg is our second home....but weren't them mountains gorgeous !

 

@onesojourner yes I use a WDH. I ended up adjusting the chains by one link to get it to sit level. The picture I posted shows a slight dip.

 

How does that 02 handle that trailer? Been thinking about getting one myself but don't know how my pickup will handle it.

 

@Filthyphil it handles the trailer fine. The dry weight on the trailer is about 3,000lbs. I honestly wouldn't want anything much bigger/heavier than this though.

 

return home trip was much better. Closer to 8 hours, including our stops to get some fireworks, eating supper and did a grocery click list pickup when we were nearly home.

this was our longest trip thus far ~800 miles round trip including detours around construction and crashes. Overall mileage for the trip (while towing) was 9.8mpg. Tundra again did great except for two minor hiccups.

1) somehow the o/d off switch switched its functionality. When the light was on it was off, and when the light was off it was on. Very weird to deal with, but corrected itself after turning the truck off and on at the fuel stop.
2) the cruise control stopped working. Typically I don’t use it when towing, except for sustained downhills to stretch my foot for a minute. Also corrected itself after a potty break.

 

How fast were you going when you experienced this?

 

Highway speeds: 60-70, and through traffic so down to a complete stop and back up to speed.
it was operating in the opposite manner. With th O/D Off illuminated O/D was on, and with the light off O/D was off.

The reason I ask is that if you're in OD and the trans shifts itself out of OD (drops down a gear) the torque converter unlocks. If you then manually activate the OD Off button, the torque converter locks back up which drops the RPM and can be mistaken as the trans shifting back into OD. I notice this sometimes around 40 mph. Since you were towing (putting more load on the transmission), that would make this behavior happen at higher speeds. I'm not saying this is definitely what you was going on with your truck, but it's a possibility.

 

Nope, definitely was happening as I described, o/d off light off and running at ~3000rpm with no throttle, press the button and revs drop to ~2000rpm with the o/d off illuminated.

my sequoias cc has shut off on me while towing a flatbed trailer with quads and dirtbikes on it. I assumed either trans or engine temps werent happy.

It’s quoted as 4K from the manufacturer with a 5k GVW. I didn’t go to the scale, but would say I’m very near 5k as loaded for that 9 day trip. My always loaded weight (chairs, chocks, tools etc) is 320lbs.

Before our next big trip in a few weeks I may run over to the scales to see what I’m at with total weight.

We are on track to camp every weekend in June. 1 more to go.
The transmission is going to get a couple more drain and fills after next week.

 

We aren’t going this weekend, but we hit 11 nights in June, and will be 18 nights in July. Based on my notes we’re near 3900 miles towing this year.

 

I'm jealous of all the pristine FGT's that look so much more modern than mine. Is that a body kit? Seems larger too. Nice looking setup.

Just got home from Zion, Utah. Little warm (115) but family had a great time. Driving the 15 highway to Los Angeles was windy, but got home safe. Finally figured out the “Tow Haul” button and utilized it!
