The real question is how long do I have to wait for aftermarket grilles and bumpers to show up.

    Nah.

Not too surprised by the overly-aggressive styling, but I like cleaner lines on the 3rd gen. Glad I bought a 2021.

One thing is certain, the value of most fist and second generation V8 Tundra trucks just increased.

Toyota's entire line including Lexus is adopting this aggressive mouth wide open, bedazzled teeth in your face front end treatment. Kudos to the first owner of the 3rd gen 2022 Tundra that puts some teeth on the front fenders, the eyes come with the truck.

I only fall into this group because I currently have a V8. Had the '22 Tundra been on offer in 2019 when I was buying neither the looks nor a TTV6 would be an automatic disqualifier. Sitting where I am now, with a V8 backed by 14 years of known reliability history, adequate towing for my needs, and a 38 gallon tank to offset its thirst... I'm just not in the market for any 1/2 ton truck that would increase my debt.

If it had some really solid reliability history the 7.3 F250 would be hard to pass up if I could get a lateral move debt wise. That would be a huge leap in capability over all the 1/2 tons, and might be able to get me to budge. I don't see that as possible, and the engine is so new I couldn't risk it as a single vehicle guy.

I like my truck. I smile walking out of the store and seeing it. I think I'm good with what I have.

I wanted a V8 Tacoma for the longest time and looked for a swapped one (regardless of engine make), but none of which I found were daily drivers or mildly modified (suspension/body), then the Tundy grew on me faster than weed in Colombia.
Ran the numbers and found no reason not to upgrade to the big yota brother.

I'm very curious to see the piping and the intercooler setup. I wonder if the intercooler is the explanation for that giant grille.

There is a natural inclination to resist change. Fear of the unknown. Satisfaction with the status quo. And, the defense of "what is mine". Afterall, if I bought it, mine must be the best? But, one of the most common criticisms of the Tundra marque, has been the fact that it was becoming dated, both in looks and technology.

I'll keep thinking about the new truck. Looking at the '22 Pro, it is already growing on me. The new grille style seems to fairly consistent across the Toyota lineup. I can't wait to try the hybrid set up. My guess is that it will be punchy and powerful. And, I'm still thinking an 8 or 10 spd. tranny.

With that said, I love my '20 Pro. I won't be selling anytime soon. But, I can't wait to see yours! Please order early and often.

The king is dead... long live the king!

I like it, it’s great to finally see a complete change on the tundra after decades of the same thing from Toyota. But to me the best truck is a paid off one, and I’m keeping my money.

The intercooler for the V35A-FTS is air to water. I looked up some parts diagrams on the Lexus site, and it appears that the liquid loop for the intercooler has its own pump and a separate radiator that is just as large as the engine coolant radiator. So that big ass grille might just be necessary.

On the plus side air to water intercoolers are much more efficient than air to air, so intake manifold air density should be quite high.

I'll be in the market for a new truck around 2025, so depending on payload I think it'll be between this and a 3/4 HD gasser GM. My buddy just bought a gasser Silverado 2500 and I gotta say it's a pretty nice truck. The payload/tow capacity compared to the current Tundra is much better, and gas mileage is comparable.

If I were in the market, I would not reject this truck based on looks. Just as an SOP for myself I also would not buy it in it's first year of production. Best case scenario in the first couple years they will find some refinements and improvements were needed, and worst case they will have bugs and glitches that they work out. That said, the Pro trim looks good. I just want to see what the other trims are going to offer.

Plug in hybrid truck? Please surrender your Man Card.

Adding the TRD Pro trim does not add enough manliness points to cover the "plug in hybrid' deduction. Shall we have the dealer add a pink fluffy steering wheel cover and headlight eye lashes so you don't have to when it arrives?:boink:;)

(Just teasing if you couldn't tell)

I've always wanted to set up an intercooler that uses an A/C evaporator core to get the intake temps way down.

I wonder if the power increase would offset the power required to run the A/C compressor. My guess is probably not or someone would have already done it.

A turbo can easily increase horsepower more than an AC takes up horsepower. Even a modest turbo can bump 40% over power without it. Thats a pretty cool idea (pardon the pun).

No doubt a turbo as is will boost it that much, but would adding the additional cooling increase those gains enough to justify it? If a turbo bumps you 40% and a super cooled on only gets you another X% how much are you losing for the AC?

Thats the million dollar question. I know my turbo (and tuned) GTI runs like crap in the heat of Summer but runs amazingly hard in the cold winter months. I have no accurate way to track the difference but I would guess the temp difference of 60 degrees is allowing 20hp or so and I'm only hitting around 220hp on a good day. If temps could be brought down further than that it should make the concept worth doing, but thats a lot more parts and weight as well.

The comparison is between power from a turbo with a normal intercooler vs turbo with an A/C cooled air charge. Does the A/C cooling increase engine power over a standard intercooler more than it costs?

I should just do the math and put the question to bed. There's either a thermodynamic reason or a cost reason why it's not done.

I'm in this group too. I do NOT want a high stress V6 engine in a big heavy full sized truck let alone something I expect to tow and haul with. Not until it's proven to be reliable at least. I don't like the idea of a bastardized engine that some genius thought would be a good idea. If it's a TTV6 I'd like to see that it was specifically designed for the truck and not pulled from a preexisting design and "modified" for the Tundra.

I’ll definitively buy this truck. I’m not paying any dealer markup though. I can wait. I’ll still keep my 2018.
Really love my 5.7 v8. Own 3 of these engines.

Lot of people’s comments about the new truck are the the similar comments when the 2.5 generation came out.

Just because it's a turbocharged V6 it doesn't mean it's "high stress". Engines are built to be reliable at a certain power output and duty cycle, the displacement of the engine has little to do with it's intended duty cycle. A good example is the cummins B series diesel. For most of it's life it's been a 359 cubic inch engine which comparable in displacement to many gasser in pickups, however it weighs 1100 lbs which is over twice what they weigh. It was also not designed for pickup use, it was originally designed for Case backhoes and tractors in the 1980's before it was "modified" for pickup use.

Fair enough, I do believe that if anyone can do it right with a focus on reliability it'd be Toyota but I'd still prefer a naturally aspirated V8 option. You add a lot more expensive moving parts that can break or malfunction with turbos. I also have a hard time believing that forced induction doesn't add additional stress and heat to an engine but I could be wrong. I'll remain skeptical until it proves itself. The whole reason I drive a Toyota is because of their rock solid reliability.

Agreed! I think they can make it bomb proof though. Diesels are super reliable (minus the emissions crap) and they all have turbos. Even the ecoboosts are improved enough that people are buying the 2.7 with this in mind. A Tundra will get you that plus working door locks and probably won’t drop a tranny;)
