First day I bought the truck (which was about 4 months ago), I noticed after a decent amount of driving that my truck has a rough time starting up. The predictability of it is inconsistent and only does it rarely. I’ve also noticed a very, very faint odor of gasoline while starting and typically does this more often when the weather is 80•+.

I’ve experienced two times where it would only turn on after the second crank.

I’m attempting a process of elimination currently and so far I’ve replaced my spark plugs, cleaned out my throttle body, changed fuel filter, and used about 3 bottles of fuel injector cleaner with no superior results.

No visible signs of leaking gasoline. No codes.

My next guess is a failing fuel injector?

Hey beef cakes, your on the right path, clean the MAF with proper cleaner and it might be a good idea to replace O2 sensors with the age of your truck. Also pcv valve replacement is another good how’s your mother, in the whole scheme of things.

Hey, thanks. O2 sensor was also on my list. Didn’t think of the MAF.
I’ll do some part searching right now. We are doing OEM only for these parts, right?

Denso for the O2s can be found at rock auto or big gurl vendor of your choice.
Hitachi is the oem manufacturer for the MAF, creditz to @Professional Hand Model

Check your vacuum hoses. Might be rotted or disconnected under the hood. Smell of gas is a sign Vapor Hose may be leaking.

All vacuum lines seem to be all in order. Just bought the upstream and downstream o2 sensors and will see from there. Also will clean MAF today

Might go ahead and buy a New Hitachi MAF Sensor if yours is original. Mine was out of Spec and cleaning doesn’t fix that.

Gave throttle body a good cleaning again today by taking it out, put in both the o2 sensors, bought some maf cleaner and went to town, but still giving me that rough start...
I guess I’ll change the pcv valve next? Maybe a new maf.
Any other bright ideas besides that, guys?

Does it start right up 1st start of the day after it's sat all night?

If you drive the truck and get everything up to temp, then shut the truck off for 1 to 2 hours, does it start hard? If yes, you have leaking injectors.

    It is a yes.
Hoping it wasn’t the injectors because they are the most expensive part on the list

It's possible, is there any smoke or haze out the exhaust after the rough start?

Yeah, I asked my brother in law to look at that today actually. He said I got a teensy bit of smoke, but it looked normal... it is like 80 today though, so I’m not certain if it’s normal.

Hmmm. I don't think any amount of smoke is normal. I could be wrong though. Mine doesn't do that anyways. Let's see what others say before you buy a new set of dirty deeds 12 hole injectors.

It makes since though because it would explain that faint gas smell.
Good call, I’ll wait for 1 more guy to compel me to buy them. Maybe someone else will say otherwise, who knows.

I’ve heard leaky injectors will also cause a misfire code, I could be wrong.
Not sure of your mileage, but the 12hole injectors might be a nice “maintenance” upgrade.
I’ve got them and like the new response from the motor

Yes, but your truck is legal to drink now. It's possible they're going tits up, but I'd let a few more chime in before a purchase yet. Where the fudge is @empty_lord ?

Yeah my dad told me the same thing. It’s not that bad. Just embarrassing when I’m next to a Tacoma and it won’t start first crank.

So extended crank typically leans toward an leaking fuel injector. Common? No. Does it happen? Yes. But ultimately without me being there to look over data lists, it’s hard to say what exactly it is at this time.

But I’d be suspicious of the injectors

I am humbled to receive his blessing

Also @empty_lord its not really an extended crank, It will start on time. More of a rough, sputtering, inconsistent crank that sounds like how you would start a diesel tractor in freezing temps. Like.. when I say that it won’t turn on here and there what it seems like it just cranks really rough, turns ON, idles super crappy for a split second, and shuts off. Hard to describe how cars start with adjectives.

But if I were to buy fuel injectors, what options are recommended?

Hmm. You may seriously have a leaking injector. If fuel leaks out overnight then it floods a cylinder causing a rough running situation.

@dirtydeeds 12hole upgrade is probably the best bet for new injectors

You can test it by leaving the key on but the engine not running.

Leave the key on for 15 minutes while sitting in a very quiet garage.

As the fuel pressure drops from the leaking injectors, the fuel pump will kick on to increase the fuel pressure that is bleeding off.

You will be able to hear and feel the pump come on every 4 or so minutes.

You must have a very quiet area to do this, though.
