I’m looking into get a 2006 Toyota Tundra SR5 Double Cab from a guy who says the engine is blown. It looks pretty good (body has 200k on it). It also has a nice ARE MX topper as well. Would love others opinions on a good price knowing that I would need a new engine. Has anyone here replaced one themselves or paid a shop to do so? If so, what did it run you?

Obviously, it may be a big challenge sourcing a 4.7L V8 in Alaska, however, if this guy give me a screaming deal, it might be too hard to pass up.

    Thanks in advance!

When my dad blew the engine in the sequoia, i think insurance paid $5k, but that was 10 years ago.

Do you have a local salvage yard in your area? They can typically source it from other salvage yards in their network. Last time I looked into it for someone it was about $1500 for a used 4.7L with 170k miles on it.

I haven’t found anything at salvage yards yet but will continue looking. It may go without saying but resources are super lacking in Alaska. For reference, in the entire state I’ve only managed to find 3 Gen 1 Tundra’s for sale in the last few months. One sold within minutes of it being listed and an hour before I found it. The second is a reconstructed title but in terrible condition. And the third is this one. I debated purchasing the second and this one simultaneously but the money and labor would be too much (2 truck purchases, engine and potential trans swap, then having a junker without an engine on my hands).

Not to poke (too hard) at Texas but everything isn’t bigger in Texas....For prospective, Alaska is GIANT yet the entire state is less than HALF (730k) the population of Manhattan, New York (1.7 million).

I wasn't there, my wife was driving it,
So, I cannot confirm or deny what happened.
I think it was a case of a heavy right foot and the supercharger, mixed with some stoplight drag racing... But, again, I cannot confirm or deny.lol
It consumed most all of it's oil

I was up your way for 10 months in 2012. Everything is bigger in AK. Everything, even the oil drilling rigs. I saw the 2nd largest land rig on the planet west of Milne Point north of Kuparik. I'm a Texan but AK is frankly amazing. Folks who never have been there simply don't know how few options there are getting things. Air and barge. When I think of AK salvage yard I think of snow machine salvage yard. Heh....heh. When you say that the engine is blown, how bad? There must be at least one engine builder in Anchorage. If so, you can source your parts from down here in the lower 48. You might be able to score a used 4.7 out of Seattle or Portland and have it barged up to Anchorage. Just throwing ideas out there.

I obviously can't speak for the whole state of AK, it's so friggin big, but 2012 winter was harsh, record harsh. The only thing I saw being used on the roads was MagChloride. No salt.

The only possible economical action there would be to find a motor in Vancouver and there would still be only the costly air or cheaper slow barge to Anchorage. Not much if anything is trucked into AK. The only truck route is the Al-Can hwy. Not an option at all. Look at the map:thumbsup:

What @Black Wolf says. I had an engine with a spun out crankshaft bearing and I just had a rebuilt lower block installed from a shop that sourced the rebuilt block locally (actually right down the street from where I lived). Maybe it just needs a head basket or the piston rings replaced, who knows? If you're mechanically inclined, you could do some of that work yourself.

Best 10 months of your life right!? ;)

The owner had it checked out and the diagnoses he got was “I sent a rod through the jacket rendering the block worthless soon after a cold start last winter.”

Haven’t checked Canada yet but good thought. Last I heard though is they are a bit strict with their borders (COVID).

Heck, if all the OP needs is a short block, then a rebuilt can be had and barged up. So many options. Forgot where OP is but once barged up to Anchorage it can then be trucked up to Fairbanks. The drive to Fairbanks is a ways north from Anchorage and OP may not have the time to pick it up in Anchorage. Even though most of the North Slopers have bugged out already because the spring thaw, there is a lot of activity going on up there in AK now. This time of year is when cement gets poured, roads re-striped, and anything construction related is geared up big time. Short window....and.....the.....tourists everywhere....with.....rental....Mini Winnies blocking the hwy to take moose and bear pics. SMH...
