Freaking Low Payload

The Toad thing looks like it will provide another level of safety. Just don't forget that it will eat into you GCWR. Other than that, it's a great alternative for someone that wants to max out towing but does not want to step up to a 3/4 ton.

 

It will also eat into your MPG, maintenance costs, storage space, etc. Lots of pros and cons. Just an option for those with plenty of cash who want to keep their Tundra and go glamping with a 35' 9000lb trailer.

Yeah, after a couple friendly farmers I know told me I'm reading way too much into it, I've come around to that mentality.

Here is a PSA: check your auto/RV insurance policies on coverage limits. Get as much liability coverage as you can afford. My mom gave me that advice a long time ago. Compared to the collision/comprehensive it’s a much smaller portion of your total insurance bill and well worth it in my opinion and piece of mind.

 

That doesn't help with hauling payload...

 

If you need help with that you can remove excess seating, tailgate, half tank of fuel, possibly spare tire, etc. There are options if it really is concerning to you. I will just use a suitable trailer when the task requires it. Much better for the truck chassis anyway.

 

Pretty sure he means payload, like a bed full of dirt. Nothing that your finagling of trailer tongue lengths or ass loading a trailer will "help" with.

 

Correct, he is implying that he might need to lighten up his truck weight. So there's a few simple things that will do just that.

 

Actually I use the same methods that people use to help them tow more. People towing used WD hitches, and devices such as the above listed, and those that wish to haul more safely use suspension modifications etc. After all all these methods are used in order to have a better, safer hauling/towing experience.

The payload on my Kubota is about the same as my Tundra.

Kubota is the shiat (at least so far as I know). Dad bought one in 1992; it's still going strong (though it's needed some maintenance here and there).

 

I run yard loads of gravel (2000+lbs)often in my dbl cab and never had a concern. Truck does fine even with family included. I just keep the rear tires aired up to around 45-50psi

 

Now you've done it, you will burn in a lake of fire! And you'll crash, losing your family and will also take out 3-4 other vehicles at the same time. However you alone will survive and will spend the rest of your life as a debt slave paying the Millions and Millions of judgements levied against you. Your insurance company won't back you, your friends will desert you and your dog will run away.

 

I feel like there aren't many non-Tundra owners who pay attention to payload. I asked my father in law and my brother in law (who's pretty into vehicles) how much payload my father in law's 2011 EcoBoost has and they both replied "well, it's a halfton so it must have 1000 lbs, right?"

 

I have to say I learned my lesson to always look at the sticker on the door! I didn’t do this with any of my other trucks until I got my Tundra and learned how low the payload really is. The F-250s I’m looking at have 3100+ Lb payload ratings , that’s ~2.5X the Tundras.

 

No fault of their own. Most truck owners just load up the truck and go and in their defense how would that know what the load weighted when it's in the truck. If you go to the lumber yard and buy 15 sheets of 3/4 plywood how would you know if you overloaded the truck? Most would just look at the squat and make an educated guess. The new F150 solves this with the load indicting tail lights.

 

You're probably like me and don't want to give up the tundra. However you can buy a 2021 Ford 250 with a 7.3 gas engine that makes 430 hp and 475 pounds of torque. It can haul 15000 pounds conventionally or 19500 by 5th wheel. It also has a pay load of 4260 pounds. If I was going to tow a lot this is the path I would go with.

 

I would wait and see what the new Tundra will bring.

 

I believe that most of the sarcastic responses are referring to overloaded towing situations. Bringing home some gravel from a few miles away is a little different than multi state travel with a mega trailer. Let’s just make safety a joke for a few likes, good job buddy.

 

I think what some are saying is that being over payload is not going result in an accident. There are many situation where many owners tow over payload and do it successfully and safely when the set up is correct. There are others that are under payload and tow unsafely because of a poor set up. To tow safely no matter what the weight is requires common sense, education and experience which unfortunately are a bit lacking for some.

 

Probably the best post I've seen on this subject. I ran across a post like this last week and talked to a few guys at work who own 1/2 tons and pull trailers, and have been pulling trailers/campers/etc. for years (decades, in some cases).

ONE of them knew exactly what the capability of his truck was. The rest essentially just assumed. None of them owned Tundras.

Not that this means they're not smart or anything of the sort....but I would bet money that the VAST majority of people who buy trucks to tow do so solely on the advice of their salesman. While talking with my salesman last week, he told me a guy was on his way in to trade in his 2020 Tundra for the new 2021 Pro on the lot. According to the salesman, "most people who buy trucks could care less about payload, weight ratings, etc. They buy for the looks and reliability and that's it; they don't care and don't want to know about the rest."

 

Yea! My father in law has a f-450 and the main gear I think is what he said had to be replaced. They had his truck for a solid week.

 

The big three move so fast with all the bells and whistles, they forget to engineer the truck to last.
