3/4 Ton Truck

Thanks for the review Shawn good to hear from someone who tows with the 6.6 gas which will also help me decide when the time comes for me to upgrade.

 

Great post!!! Have you done any significant hills while towing 10k? I’ve only done about 7,500lbs so far, very interested to see at what weight it starts to struggle.

I did do one significant hill. I usually avoid it when towing anything. It’s just straight up. It’s hard to tell in the photo but that is an 8° climb for about 2 miles. With 10k it did very well. I am going to ask the neighbor if I can load 12k-14k on the gooseneck trailer and try to pull it up that hill. I think it will start slowing down about 3/4s of the way up. This hill sucks driving without towing. But for what I’m doing I think the 6.6 gas is a great fit.

 

I trade in my 2020 tundra with 22k on it after 4 months haha. But I drive a lot. I’ve owned this truck for 2 months and I’ll have 10k on it by the end of the week

Wow your story is almost the same as mine except instead of an LS I'm dragging 7500#'s of Jayco that's 33' long. I'm even getting the same truck as you.

Today I made a deposit on a '21 GMC 3500 Longbed gasser. Except mine is the base model (work truck). It has the 5th wheel/goose prep package (which includes spray-in bed liner), Convenience package, a block heater, and Sirius XM. And that's it. Looking forward to the vinyl flooring instead of carpet. Would've liked a higher trim level but they weren't to be found. In fact this one is still in transient to the dealer. I also got the same color, thanks for posting pics it's the first one I've seen of that color in the wild.

I too wanted to take advantage of the high trade-in values but didnt want to pay premium to get into another truck. Then I find out that a relative who's retired from GM can extend the GM Family First employee discount to me and that changed everything. I searched high and low for a Chevy/GMC, 2500/3500, gasser/diesel. I didnt care what I got as long as it was a long bed, crew cab, and had a bench seat up front. Practically every vehicle that popped up in inventory within 250 miles was already sold. I did find some that had the Duramax available but that dealer wouldn't honor the discount.

Finally found this one available and at a willing dealer. They're giving me $38k for my '18 SR5 CM with 49k miles on it and the discount is getting me $4500 off of sticker for the GMC. They're also swapping out the factory Michelins for ST Maxx's for a great price.

Quick ballpark numbers on the GMC:

Payload 4300
Bumper pull 14,500
5th wheel 16,400

It breaks my heart to give up my Tundra, for all the same reasons you posted. At 49k she's still tight as new with no rattles or creaks inside. But, mission dictates equipment and I really need 6 seats, higher payload, and more towing.

We have gas 3/4 ton service trucks 6.4 ram and 6.6 Chevy. They both do great with weight on the back but trailers seem to bog them down a bit. They do ok and definitely have enough to pull a decent trailer, but we still keep at least 1 diesel service truck around for when the trailers really get heavy. That’s why I went diesel with my new truck, the only reason for the upgrade was to tow heavier trailers for work.

 

I can see that the reason I am looking at a 3/4 ton gasser to tow half ton weights but I need to have enough payload for everything else I need. I don't think my trailer weight will bog it down as much.

Great thread. I now find myself in this same situation funny how life can change on a dime. I love my 2021 SR5, but am now I’m in the market for a TT. I have scoured the forums and have the dilemma of either pick a smaller trailer or buy a bigger truck. I’m looking at. GD Reflections 297RSTS that has a max GVWR of 9,995 lbs. on paper the Tundra will pull it, some report no issues, but in good conscience I can’t justify just “squeaking by” on weight/payload. It will always be on the back of my mind if I’m overweight.

so the challenge begins: find a larger truck or a smaller trailer that meets my needs.

 

We went back and forth on the issue with my wife a few times and decided to go with the bigger truck since we do really enjoy the size of our trailer and like the layout. Good luck buddy!

My daily drivers were Super Duty's from 1999 to 2016. The Tundra felt like a sports car in comparison.

Absolutely. I was referring more to the cornering. My 3/4 and 1 ton liked to go straight when it was time to turn. There is no doubt about the acceleration and braking of a HD truck when empty.

 

I would make the choice of TT based on the truck I want, not the other way around. My truck is a daily driver, and I’ll probably never pull a TT, but if I did I imagine it would be far less frequent than the time I spend in the truck per year. I’d definitely keep my tundra and find a suitable TT so I can keep my reliable daily driver that I love.

 

I started with that logic, I work from home and with youngest off to college I am going to sell my house and live full time in the RV until the housing market gets back to normal. It’s cheaper to overpay on a HD truck than a house. Plus I can use the extra trade in to offset the truck cost too. Decisions decisions decisions…

Yes higher trimmed diesel trucks are insane. That's why I got my lonely gasser. $46K for a package the same as the SR5

I really can’t complain about the cornering in my GMC 2500 compared to the Tundra I had with a 3” lift. The biggest difference I notice while commuting is when I hit a rough patch of road. It’s super smooth on good or decent roads, when the road gets ugly you are going to feel it.

I still regret trading in my 2015 power stoke lariat. I bought it for $50k even after the beginning of 2015, and that same truck is around $70k now
