FGT featured in Outside Magazine

Good choice on the factory 17s. They are some of my favorite OEM wheels. How's the maintenance records? have your looked you vin up on the toyota owners site? Most of these trucks are behind on some things at this age. Mine had the bare minimum done and I have been playing catch up since I got it.

 

I just bought a twin to yours last week here in CO. It has a color matched tonneau that I’ll for sure sell in the near future if you want a match

Yep, been through the records. Last owner was meticulous, so most maintenance up to date. And walked through it with a good mechanic, who concurred, though we did transmission fluid, and some brake work. Drives like new. Ogling BA exhaust though... and maybe some fresh Bilsteins...

Welcome, Thanks for the read! I had a manual 2000 V6 long bed in 2000. Loved that truck but needed interior space. I still miss it.

I literally just went through the same adventure finding a second gen Sequoia so I know the obsession.

Hey Nick cool story, have several similar ones, but mostly involve old bimmers.
Always fun when looking at prospect car on the lift, not so fun when the repairs to make it worth the asking price are more than twice the price of the car.

On the FGT front mine sorta just followed me home. At the beginning of this year we were moving to a new building, while emptying different shacks in the parking lot I started looking at one of my friend's Tundra that had been sitting in the lot for a few years. I had always liked them but had no need for a truck, but then I thought I may need another 4WD vehicle since my kid will soon be of age, and he likes to go off road. I texted my friend out of curiosity, he had bought a new truck and thought of taking the FGT to his family farm but.....
Anyways, he said he give me a good deal, and he did!
I now own a 2002 AC Tundra SR5 TRD with 350K miles. I love it, its simple and solid.

I bought my first Tundra a couple of months ago and I am hooked. I have a friend that has a 1st Gen. It shows it's age. It runs good and has character, kinda like an old pair of hiking boots. He has one with the first engine in it, which was the Lexus version. I am currently trying to figure out how to get the wife to buy into a Tundra collection.

OP, nice write up on your FGT. It's occurred to me to have one for hard use and one that's all fresh and clean like you have but then I'd have to go on quest like you did.

It looks like we've had similar taste in cars too. Perhaps the best van ever and the best truck ever, IMHO.

 

Man Op scored on that 1st gen, nice find. That’s a cool article also, I feel like a lot of people sleep on the 1st gen tundras and sequoias. We added an 07 sequoia after liking the tundra so much. Drove 6 hours to Memphis to get it.

 

Hoping you didn’t stay long….rough crowds in that area

 

It was out skirts of Memphis, we met the dude at his gated country club to look at the truck. Definitely not the hood lol

 

I sold my 02 to a coworker in 2015 when I picked up this DC TRD PRO. It had 6 miles shy of 200,000 on it when I handed over the keys, it now has nearly 275k. I see it in the parking garage regularly and kind of wish I still owned it.

 

I get the feeling most regret selling their nice FGTs.

This really resonates with me. Nice article and I truly understand your pain. I too was looking for a new Tundra after a kid took out my perfectly fine 2004 DC with only 132k miles on it in January of this year. After looking for 6 months finally found one in northern Arkansas...two owner, 2006 DC 2WD Limited in Phantom Grey Pearl with 156k. At $10k is was in my price range. Flew up this week to purchase and drove back yesterday. Great ride. Needs some cleaning for sure, but mechanically is perfect. Congrats on the find and who knew these would be so hard to find. Rejoined the forum and glad to be here.

Pretty cool. When reading the article I was thinking, "If this guy was on Tundras.com no way would he risk a 14 year old 154k timing belt cross country" But you made it home, so I guess the seller already had the belt done.

 

Beyond all the work you put into that 05 regular cab (looks awesome, btw), curious how you're liking this model. Asking because I'm moderately obsessed w/ the long beds and I've got a line on one that looks quite nice (1 owner, 166K, 4wd, immaculate, babied, rust free, and a few nice upgrades). They're asking 11k. Not a steal by any means but given condition, think it's worth it?

 

I know you’re not asking me but ‘yes’, especially with the current crazing prices, that’s a great deal for a one-owner 166k 4x4 (as long as there’s no hidden rust problem). If you don’t buy it, please hit me up in a PM with info so I can buy it.

I like the turdra. Its 4x4, so doesnt get the milage or tight turning radius of the titan, but its smaller and fit better into public parking. Id also like a long bed, but i have a sequoia donor i might steal the coil/disc rear from, and have the ultimate highway rig for folks without human kids. Titan is also cab and a half, so my dog is used to having to sit and spin to turn around.

 

Still, IMHO, the best dimensions and proportion for bed and double cab of any generation.

Interior space is seriously tight. But if it’s a v8 4x4 especially 05-06 are we probably the rarest of the tundras honestly. The bed size is amazing for getting stuff done

Really enjoyed the article - but mad the word is getting out on the best overall combination of trucks ever built by Toyota. The FGT AC & DC will forever be my favorite trucks.

I went on a similar hunt for about 6 months and finally found my gem in Washington. Wife and I flew from AZ and bought a 2 owner ‘06 DC with 104k miles, zero rust and immaculate interior. I tell my wife how much I love her and the truck everyday

BTW, are we all just choosing to ignore the nickname “FGT” or are we winking at it?

 

^^^FGT appears to be a common nickname although I'm trying to change to the much more compelling 1GT.

 

I personally like OGT, but only if we are abandoning FGT.
