And i dont love the ‘02 tundra limited.

i will preface with the fact that this is a great camry with 6.something’ of bed.
Wanna get stomped? Race anyone.
Wanna get stuck? Road tires.
Wanna haul a load? Tread lightly.
Wanna be easy to work on? Fair.
Wanna go offroad? Uca’s and bj’s. Also fair.
Wanna rev? 2-bolt and thin rods.
Wanna boost? Thin rods and 2-bolt. Want 5th or 6th gear? Computers.

This is not a toy like my ‘88 p/u or ‘96 5runner was. Those were indestructible, hang the rev limiter, downshift to drift beasts. The tundra is softer, more prone to asshatery destruction. Some of that can be attributed to weight, but its a big tacoma, that should be treated as such.

All that to say i think im burning my way into a turbo ls/t5 setup.

 

Tundra is well rounded for any use

 

As long as that use isnt too manly.

It's a Jack of all trades but master of none... except reliability, which is huge.
If I do an LS swap up it'll be for my Jeep. Better investment and bang for the buck. The 4.7 suits the Tundra fine in my opinion, with no mods. You won't win many races (unless it's black) but it'll get you there and back every time.

 

This seems to be the case with any half ton. The new 5.7 trucks can haul the same weight as the old ones on paper.

I always start with reliability and they do that well.

 

I don't know about you but I feel safer driving in my Tundra than a Tacoma plus it handles better IMO. Not to piss in anyone’s Cheerios, but to me driving a Taco feels like I’m driving a toy.

By today's standards the first gen is on the slow side. Back when it was produced, in my experience, it was as fast or faster than any other truck (special edition hot rods excluded). A truck is a truck, it is expected to do truck shit, if you want fast buy a car.

 

Or a motorcycle.

 

The Tundras won't fly across the Rubicon like the mini solid axles would but are a damn fine truck.
I love trucks that GET ME HOME rolled or not!

 

Why I luv my 2021 TRD Sport...

Cavernous cabin space...important when one is 6'3" / 240 and has two sons at 6'2" and 6'5".
Great to haul bulky items from time to time, like a new range, dryer, etc. or some bedroom furniture
Cheaper to insure than any of my Accords for equal coverage.
Nice high ride among the traffic.
Enough power to get out of its own way and everybody else's way, especially with Tow/Haul engaged.
Perfect for the day fishing trip to the coastal beaches.
Very good AC unit for the South Texas heat
Can easily haul the foursome and all their golf bags to the golf course for that Saturday morning round...in style and comfort.
Endless number of mods and accessories to make it your own.
Huge back window that rolls down to bring in that fresh air, but also serve as a canvas to express yourself as you wish.
Feeling safer than any of the sedans I use to drive. The TRD Sport package makes highway driving pretty darn nice IMO.
Minimal technology...being an old school boomer...I like that!
It puts a huge smile on my face every time I climb into the cockpit.
Neighbors are jealous...ha!
And finally...I think mine looks pretty BadA$$ with the TRD hood scoop (sure I can be as superficial as you want me to be!).

And I have only had a Tundra for about 6 months..no doubt this list will expand. Probably by tomorrow morning.

But then understand perspective. Unlike many here I bought my truck because I liked it. It was "need" overkill and not practical for my lifestyle. I did not care. It checked the only box I had..I wanted a truck..no check that..I wanted a Tundra.

 

I'm not sure any of that applies here.

 

Yea, im full of bull. Truck did great on the trip. While i did get passed by a karen in his crossover, everything was smooth and comfortable. It is a camry with a bed, but its all it needs to be. At least for the next 70k miles or so until i wear out the bitchelins and get some tires that make me cut plastic and hammer seams… if only it wasnt so pretty that i have to worry about it.

 

You need the 4.8L V10 from the Lexus LFA in there to be happy. 553 hp 354 ft-lbs of torque.

High. You’d have to be revving it all day to reach that torque. And no one wants to hear that engine ever /sarcasm

Thats overkill for coupling toyota engines. A couple of spring clamps and a short piece of rubber hose should work fine.

 

Maybe. But welding them together for a true v16 that makes the same power as a modern v8 sounds cooler

the lack of acceleration when trying not to downshift isnt much of an issue. I didnt even have to downshift through the hills.

 

Yall are going about this all wrong. With a 2nd engine and trans, you put it in the bed and use a short driveshaft. Then run the xfer case in 4wd with no rear drive shaft.

Or get really weird and get 2 LS 3s from the fwd chevys and slap one in front and one in the rear...

Oh, and speaking of being a camry, have you seen the new trd camrys? They look pretty damn sharp and pack 301 hp. Not bad.

 

I'm renting a 2021 4Runner right now. I would gladly take my '03 Tundra over it any day. The drivetrain is a complete mess, surprisingly slow for a modern car and the transmission has no idea what gear it wants to be in. My experience is limited so maybe the OP is correct and the FGT sucks but I love mine.

Man dude you could be right but i disagree. I don’t think the tundra is soft. I have spent literal minutes on the limiter of mine, and its my daily! Were i live there is several ft of snow a lot of the winter and i love to snow wheel. My tundra has been through broken arrow to hells revenge and every type of off roading you could think of, nothing insane, but pretty much never let me down unless self inflicted lol. Mine has done all this without lockers or long travel with no issues. It’s been a foot in the air more than once and never busted a thing. You are correct about power. They are nothing special. Just wish there was more aftermarket support.

 

Also like they have stated in its time the tundra was not under powered. The 2003 5.4 Ford F-150 made about 235 hp. Chevy 1500 about 280. Dodge 4.7 about 240. Tundra is right with them. None of them will feel like a race truck compared to new technology in new vehicles.

 

My ‘04 vk56 is pretty rowdy until it goes into limp mode. And will hold 75 while limp.

 

Thought expieriment time:

if i make the sequoia into a trailer, and leave the drivetrain in it, like a powered trailer, could i get better fuel milage if both trucks were running 2.50 rear gears and no OD? 3.23s and OD? I know city milage would suffer, and it would definitely be better than the tundra dragging the weight on its own. But could i top 17.3 towing a powered trailer with highway gears? maybe skinny tires and bellypans?
