The Tundra hood scoop is the only Toyota one I don’t like. I wish they did a hood bulge without the scoop when they add the hood scoop. The only double scoop I like is on an ice cream cone.

Really doesn’t seem like the Ram Box is that popular anymore. A coworker of mine bought his second Ram with it about a year ago, was hard to track one down even with the massive inventories during early COVID.

I’m liking the MultiPro tailgate more than I thought I would, just annoying I can’t use it with my WDH hitch mounted. Was only on GMC but now getting added to Chevy. I wouldn’t be surprised if another company does something similar.

I'm probably behind the times, but I've now had two Toyota salesmen tell me they didn't think the V8 5.7 was going away next year, only that they were adding a hybrid. Is there any validity to that?

I was thinking about upgrading this year before the 5.7 goes away, but if it's not going anywhere this coming year then I'll hold off.

I’m guessing we won’t really know which motor/transmission combo this truck will have until we actually get to see it and the specs are revealed. In my opinion just wait for the new truck to find out before we go crazy about engine stuff.
Sure is fun to dream though!

If the goal is to have mpg up, the 5.7 is gone. Under heavy load the 3.5tt won’t have any better mpg, but under light load it will. With a hybrid, the 5.7 will never be as fuel efficient as the 3.5

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Non functional hood scoops are the stupidest shit ever.

is your powerboost lifted and on 34’s? I regularly see 18 mpg in my tundra on my way to work and 17 mpg by that same route coming home.

The old school hot rodder in me says that bigger and overdesigned is better for reliability. However the engineer in says, materials and engineering design have advanced much in the past 20 years. That's why Hyundais and Kias are popular they hold up for short term that most people own them, a few years. However while Engineering has advanced, I think Engineering Management has gotten much worse. Its this last factor that will play into actual reliability in my humble opinion. Someone will cut a corner on a new design in order to make the price point. The statistical analysis of the proposed change will, after a few iterations, show that the proposed change will not affect overall reliability.
It is for these reasons that I bought the Tundra, this design has been around awhile and most of the bugs have found and dealt with. I did consider a Ford but only one with either the 5.0 or 7.3 for the same reasons.

I also don’t think Toyota mechanics are skilled enough to work on a TTV6. Look up the LS TTV6 and what Lexus mechanics say. A nightmare to work on. Could be the packaging, tighter workspace in the LS. Doesn’t sound like it.

Also, talk to a new Supra owner. They don’t take there cars to a Toyota dealer for service. They go straight to the BMW dealer.

The 5.7 is dead. Key word is you talked to a Toyota salesman, which I rank as the slimiest salesman out of all auto makers.

Ive never met a toyota salesman who even knew about the truck they had on the lot, much less an unannounced truck.

The non functional hood scoop wasn’t a deal breaker for me but if they had a cooler looking hood on the TRD PRO that would be a plus.

The Rebel has the same non functional hood scoop from what I remember.

One of the Rebels on the lot had the Ram boxes. Thought they would be useful but it does cut down on the bed storage if you carry a lot in the bed. I was on the fence about actually getting the Ram boxes because of that. But the outlet in the Ram box was cool.

The multifunction tail gate would have been a must on the AT4 and the bed step on the Raptor as well.

All trucks have their pros and cons and I just think the Tundra had the most important ones checked off for me. Residual, comfort, suspension and the technology I wanted.

3-1 level kit with add a leaf. 295/70/18r cooper max. Spider head light tail light and third brake light, tint, badges off, ladder racks, trd pro grill, color matched hood bulge, grab handle, coach builder +2, dv8 front bumper with winch, fender flares, bed cover....
If they had a more efficient, more power double cab with rear roll down window. I would be very tempted.

It’s like the 6.6 gassers have the same hood scoop as the duramax, but it’s only functional on the diesel trucks

Round Rock Toyota north of Austin is the same, for those in central Texas. We’ve used them for 7-8 years and never a problem, ever, and they never push unnecessary service.

No idea. We’ve never serviced our Toyota vehicles elsewhere. They also never bug me when I tell them I’ll fix something they found, like a blown shock I already knew about and had ICONs on order.

exactly. Why are people still saying they don’t know what powertrain is going in the 2022 tundra? We know it’s the same as the lc300. Fanboys can’t let it go though, because they were promised a “world beater”

People are saying they don’t know because Toyota has not officially released any details on the coming powertrains. You/I/we can all assume it’s the ttv6 but until the official details are released then we just don't positivity know.

I think that is true. Look at fuelly.com and you can see the real-world mpg's for any truck. V6 turbo's are great around town and satisfy the EPA, but when you get into boost they're as thirsty as a V8, more thirsty sometimes.

We'll have to buy whatever is offered. A hybrid sounds good to me, we'll see what Toyota brings to the table.

    TundraLaw,

You're obviously very excited and happy about your new purchase and you should be. But being on a Tundra forum isn't exactly going to get the supportive response from a bunch of Toyota owners. You've owned Tundras in the past, and my previous 3 vehicles were Ford's. And I left Ford for a reason. I'm fairly confident that this was my last opportunity to buy a half ton with a V8 and I wanted the most reliable one I could get. Coming from a 302a which would in a 2021 maybe a 301a as they've changed is a massive upgrade. The screen has quadrupled, I've got leather, sunroof, TSS, and the sound of the V8 rumble. Love the back window.

Ford makes a great truck and I'd even argue that they're the benchmark against which all other pickup trucks are measured against. But with my experience comes knowledge and history. Ford innovates and strives to be the leader, because they have to be, the F150 is their bread and butter, if it fails Ford will fail. I've also experienced they beta test a lot of their innovations on their customers and you're often left on your own after the warranty expires. They've even got their own phone line and customer retention system just for F series, it's that important. I wish you all the best with your new truck but hybrid this, electronic fold down shifter and fold flat seats isn't my jam. If I had to do it all over again I'd still pick the Old Tundra because that's my personality and where I want to be in the market.

Obviously, it's not that there aren't great Toyota techs - there most certainly are great techs. The problem is you just don't know who is and who isn't, even if you did how do you know they will be working on your vehicle, and turnover tends to be high so who knows if they will be there next time? When I compare that to going to Bob's garage (a former Lexus master tech) where I KNOW who is going to be working on my vehicles and if there's a problem it will be made right...well why take the chance? Now there's always warranty work so there is that crapshoot but I have rarely needed warranty work on any vehicle so hasn't been a problem.

I do fight against the idea of "factory certified techs" automatically being awesome. This marketing plot by the manufacturers works really well with people who know little about their vehicles and they truly believe going to the dealership automatically means they are getting the best possible service - I mean they are trained by the factory....right? My business partner will not let anyone who is not a Ford tech work on F150 even though it's long out of warranty and they seem to find an awful lot of things wrong on a 2016 with 78K miles....every time he goes in.

Ford will put the ideas to market first, but did they truly come up with it first? Hard to know. When Toyota is going to test something for years on end while Ford will do it after a year or so they will almost always get beat to market. But with that makes consumers a bigger part of the testing program.

I recently leased a German car, turned it back in after 3 years because I never owned a German car before. It was in the shop frequently, but the dealer always provided a good experience, and I will honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed that vehicle, even if it was somewhat "unreliable" compared to what you expect from Japanese vehicles. The driving experience was top-notch.
I typically buy a different/new car every 3-5 years, so I totally appreciate having something nice and new, and I keep a truck in the driveway for "truck things".

However, in my personal situation I see a truck as something different. I take them to the dump, tow heavy, camp out of it, expect them to be durable, prefer they don't have an issue whilst towing through the mountains, I allow my family to eat inside of it and make a mess, we get stains on the seats, I don't care if it's too big for the parking spot, someone bumps into it, sometimes the rear end sits in salt water whilst launching/recovering the boat, I intentionally push it too hard off-road, etc. All the things that ruin resale value for those who will upgrade regularly. I like to buy my truck cash and expect it to become a well-worn tool.

I really like the way the new F-150's drive (we have 5.0 and 2.7EB) they seem so nice. I can see how owning one under warranty would be totally fine.
