Well, I always wanted a T100 when I was a teenager. Fast forward 25 years, I have a chance. Tundra 5.7 V8 Crew Max with TRD and Tow package rated to 10,100 lbs of towing. That is around the minimum of what I am looking for in towing capacity. Anyone have a gooseneck hookup in theirs? And will I be happy with this to tow horses around or should I wait for a 3/4 ton truck. I have been looking for a Silverado, but my garage just got this Toyota in and he called me up because he knows I have been looking. 118k miles, they are asking $22,500.

    Thoughts?

Most people on here have trouble getting close to max towing capacity without maxing out the payload on the truck first. The payload is pretty low compared to a decent sized 3/4 ton.

I think payload was around 1600 lbs. How's that all factor in though? I drove a car all my life but my wife loves horses so here I am LOL!

The tongue weight of the trailer + any thing in the truck ( including passengers, but not driver) need to be less that the payload to maintain the gvwr.

Many people go over this, but it's not legal depending on who you ask and where you live.

That being said I tow cars around all the time and my tundra tows great, just make sure to do some research first

    What's your Tundra capacity?
My thought was to put a gooseneck hitch in and get a lightweight hire trailer that could pull 4 horses. I figured 4000 lbs for them. 1000 lbs for humans. Leaves me about 4500-4800 for trailer weight which leaves a few 100 lbs for gear.

But maybe I should just hold out for a 3/4?

Goose necks are supposed to have at least 15% of the trailer weight on the ball. Trailer + horses = 8500 lbs * 15% = 1275 lbs in your bed which only leaves 325 lbs for passengers, the actual hitch and gear.

It's possible... But you're at the limit of the truck towing that.

Most tundras have similar capacities. The gvwr is ~7200 lbs, so it's just that minus the weight of the truck.

I just upgraded to a 1 ton gasser. The tundra or any half ton doesn’t even come close to towing. I would wait. It’s night and day. I’m going to do a full write up now that I have 10k miles on the new truck

I have had a Crewmax for 14 years, towed a 5,000 lb (loaded) travel trailer for years. The Tundra towed this trailer without a hiccup. A few years a go, I moved up to a 8,500 lb TT. After a few tows, I bought a Super Duty Diesel because the Tundra just wasn't as capable with the weight increase. (I kept the Tundra). The Tundra is a very capable tow vehicle, but, as the weight increases, it begins to show its rated design and power limitations.
IMO, you would be much happier with a 3/4 - 1 ton tow vehicle towing 8,000 plus pounds.

If 10,100 lbs is the minimum you are looking for then you won’t be happy in a tundra. It seems around 5000 lb is the sweet spot for a 1/2 ton. Any more and your payload is gone or trailer is too big.

Thanks for the response. I have been focusing on a 3/4-1 ton but this Tundra popped up and besides the 10,100 tow rating which is at the low end of my needs, this one checks all the boxes.

The Tundra is a great truck that pulls well within a certain range. Personally, anything over 8000 lbs towing regularly should be handled by a bigger truck.

GN trailers typically are 15-20% pin weight and will totally soak up all your trucks capacity. Horse trailers are not light either.

Yea, my bumper pull 2 horse trailer will likely be fine in the Tundra but I want to someday be able to pull 3 or even 4 horse trailer so the whole family can go out with the horses together. 4 horses and leaving 1000 lbs for humans and cargo is around 5000 lbs. Plus the trailer weight I would likely need to be able to pull closer to 12,000 lbs. Maybe I'll still look at it for now while I have my 2 horse trailer though.

Not too many horses in there?
Also Tundras are too tall for the Scamp if stock.

Go with a 3/4 or 1 ton forsure if towing a 5th wheel weighing 10k lbs

Interested in reading the review. We can get a 1 ton LT Chevy for around the same price as decent trim tundra

Unless you want to be featured on THIS site, go for the 3/4 or 1 ton.

Yup I got it for around the same price as a SR5 crewmax. I will probably post it tonight or tomorrow. And it’s nothing against the tundra. But HD trucks are in a different class which I didn’t realize until I got to tow with it

to get close to what you would want you would need a double cab (since family , not large crew max) with a 8ft work bed ( 8ft only available in DC an RC not in CM) also 2wd to maximize your towing/hauling weight potential. honestly you would be better off for 3/4 or 1 ton especially a dually would be ideal thing for the weight you want to haul plus live stock towing issues (weight shifting)
