New to the group. Not sure if this has been addressed before.
    I have a 2010 Toyota Tundra, 97K mileage.
Oil changes have always been done by shops, but I did my first oil change 700 miles ago. The filter had lots of grit in each fold of the filter.
I replaced the oil and the filter. Drove for 700 miles and then took out the filter. A little bit of grit again (not as much as previous).
A friend is saying I should get rid of the truck, that this is a sure sign that it'll die at some point soon.
Is this correct? Or is there a way I can clean up this situation?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks mech_engineer09. Sorry I don't have any pix. I'll definitely post some here when I change the oil filter again in a few more miles. I should have taken pix on that first oil change. Is there any general discussion or thoughts I can get from the group?

Lol yeah it's just when you use the term "grit" do you mean like metal shavings or something else.

Looked like grains of sand. When rolled between my fingers, felt like sand.

    Define grit. Metal or sludge?

If it is metal, then I would have concerns. If it is sludge then your latest oil might just be cleaning up buildup in the block.

I would send a sample into blackstone if you can actually see the grit in theoil that is drained out of the pan. you can always throw some seafoam into the oil i think they recommend 100 miles before next oil change to help cleanup any gunk.

Take a magnet to the filter pleats next change. That'll give a good indication to the severity of the problem...

Ok, I won't panic yet. I'll drive it another couple hundred miles and do another filter change. I'll see if it feels like metal or sludge. And definitely take pix!

Magnet is a great idea. I'll do that.

Sometimes I think shops are lazy about changing the oil filters on these trucks. Which is why I think it’s possible it may have not been changed in a while. What type of air filter are you running on that thing? Maybe they had a free-flowing unit that wasn’t Maintained properly. I’ve even seen cases where they had a con style filter that actually fell off the intake tube. I’m just wondering how grit would’ve got in there in the first place.

This is what I was thinking. I bought a used corvette once with one of these filters.. Such junk. If you do have an aftermarket filter go back to stock. It breathes most as well and filters more stuff out.

15whtrd: I agree. When we looked at that filter we took off 700 miles ago, we were shocked! Plus it took FOREVER to get the skid plate off so we could reach the filter. All the signs that none of this had been done in centuries. The filter I'm using now is a WIX. Will check into a stock filter.

If properly maintained, TRD or K&N style air filter can be just fine. It just needs to be maintained properly. But by all means, a stock air filter is a no-brainer that it will function properly. When it’s dirty throw it away!

WIX is OK. Lots of guys around here swear by them. Oil and air filters. The fact that that skid plate was hard to get off is a telltale sign they may not have been changing the filter or any of it by that matter LOL

If you are worried about the engine, do a compression test on it and that should tell you a lot. I don’t know what numbers you would be looking for but this is what many would recommend in your condition.

I agree but nothing beats the stock air box for keeping that air clean!

I am rocking a AFE dry pro drop in, In the stock airbox. When I off road I swap out with a stock paper element for its filtration.

Sometimes you will find carbon chucks in a filter. Basically black chucks that will break apart. If that is what it was I would just keep an eye on it now that you are doing your own oil changes.
