At this point with Ford doing so good with their power numbers and MPG. I really think Toyota will need to bring out a diesel hybrid and get 30mpg with over 500ft lbs to be considered a world beater.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
I would love to see it, but there is approximately a .000000000000001% chance it will happen.

Considering the new 3.3L TTV6 turbo diesel makes 304hp and 516lb-ft all on its lonesome, the integrating a 48V or 60V electric motor in place of the torque converter it would be easy to boost that by 40-50hp and slap on 75-100lb-ft. So you’d actually be looking at more like 350hp and 600lb-ft diesel electric hybrid.

Too bad it won’t happen because Toyota hasn’t got the balls.

They would sooner offer a plug-in hybrid with 100 miles of EV range than bring any diesel over to the US.

That being said I think a Sequoia plugin with a really large battery pack alongside that 3.5TT would be a pretty cool soccer dad vehicle.

The majority of 1/2 ton truck buyers only get groceries and pick the kids up from school, so why would Toyota put out some insane power numbers base engine for that? It’d be a waste of money on their part.

The distance in front and behind the wheel wells looks similar to what is seen in the spy photos with the black camo??? Almost looks like they shortened the wheel base and have more over hang out the back ???

I am still really confused by the power rating on the new 3.5L TTV6 in the Land Cruiser.

409hp @5200 RPM is just weird. Toyota means to tell us that a cylinder head, turbocharger, after cooler, and intake manifold that are making that kind of torque (413lb-ft @5200 RPM) all of the sudden can’t muster any more power gains past 5200 RPM? It’s moving enough air to make 413lb-ft for crying out loud, and they decide to shut the party down right there.

Keep in mind that’s more torque than the 5.7L 3UR-FE makes at its 3600RPM peak. The 3UR-FE is making just a bit over 357lb-ft @5600 RPM to make 381hp. Remember past 5252 RPM even if torque output falls off horsepower still builds.

Maybe the turbos are so small they become a restriction past 5200 RPM? The posted power curve where power falls off of a cliff though makes me think the tune is pulling out fuel, or bleeding off boost immediately after the 5200 RPM mark.

Because they are “in it to win it” and it’s a “world beater”

that’s what we are being told, so now show me the tire smokin horsepower and tree pullin torque. And that doesn’t mean come out with less than Ford

I get that, but at the end of the day it's toyota and they quit offering blowers back in 2015 and re-launched the supra/bmw, so i wouldn't expect some 450hp/550tq turbo engine from them for the tundra. I hope i'm wrong though. I'd take 20lb/ft less of torque in a Tundra though if i had to choose between that and the ecoboost. All they really need to do is be close to the power which it looks like it is, better payload, and offer a crewmax with a 6.5' bed. There's a considerable amount of f150 owners that would switch over for those reasons.

Yup, as I’ve said before they won’t come out with something that blows away the powerboost, they missed the opportunity to claim top dog with the delay.

that doesn’t mean it can’t be good, they just need to stop talking like it’s going to have some way higher output than anything else on the planet. I think most agree here , it won’t

3.5 tt v6 is the base engine then you add the hybrid on that same motor for the top engine

my bet is it’s around the poowerboost numbers but not more, especially that 570 they have I mean wow.

I’ll admit I so want that built in generator but in a yota!

This thread has used the the words " World Beater" to death and the best part is Toyota has never said or used this phrase.
Robby Findlay, Chairman, Toyota National Dealer Advisory Council is the one who said that in an interview with Automotive News. all these post keep referring to it as if Toyota was making this claim.
Like my Dad use to say, your gonna get what you get, take it or leave it.

Toyota announced in December 2017 that all the vehicles in their fleet will offer electric or hybrid versions by 2025. As much as I’d love to see a diesel that doesn’t use DEF or DPF nonsense there’s zero chance we see one in the U.S. The premium engine option will almost certainly be a TTV6/hybrid combo

Unless they make minor tuning adjustments then quote a higher rpm with more power. Automakers quoted lower rpm figures in the 60’s to get around insurance companies.

Whatever they come out with few things are certain.

    - it’s going to be boring
    - it will not change the truck world
    - Ford will pass its power figures in 2 years
    - the truck will outlast whatever god awful infotainment they put in it
    - people will be unhappy with it and call it ugly for the first year
    - and IMO it will be overpriced but we’ll all still buy it

Don't forget they'll still command a premimum price as used vehicles in 10 - 15 years because unlike the Fords, they'll still be on the road.

I have it on good authority that the 2022 Tundra will be a world beater by offering coil springs, a new air filter on the 5.7L, new grille & headlights plus new programming on the 6 speed transmission. It should be good for another 14 years.

I called this months ago. Toyota loves to use 5 year old design trends from Lexus. That entire dash/HU screams 2016 Lexus IS.

Toyota fit and finish= excellent. Everything else, eh.

I had a 2017 Tundra, a 2019 Tundra, and now a powerboost with the 7.2 generator, and every possible option. Was a fleet truck meant for the mines here in Nevada, but I got it just before they could pick it up. Only truck on the lot.

    Absolutely love it.

I really like it so far. Only three months in and about 7k miles, nothing broke yet! (knock on wood) Needed an HD truck for my trailer and I’m really happy with how it tows. Still feels weird to not have the Tundra, I’m too much of a Toyota fanboy to let go.

Interested to see the hp/tq curves for this new engine. How the power comes on and is delivered and where the two intersect is also important as the peak numbers.
