Hi eryone. Picked up mt 21 trd pro last week, and finally got to take it for a decent stretch yesterday.

First, has anyone noticed a whine when the let their truck coast from 65-ish down to around 50? I cant tell where its coming from yet. It sounds like it might be the transmission because i can hear it really well while coasting and when i gas slightly up from about 50 to 60 but i havent found anything similar in searches so far.

second, there is a burning smell when i get out coning from under the passenger side. I cant source that either, but my tacoma had some burning break smell for the first 200 or so miles too. Any of you guys experience that on their new tundras??

The dealers getting a call tomorrow about it, but if anyone has had similar issues, it would at least ease my mind a bit.

I had the burning smell as well, it was gone after a few hundred miles. I didn't have the whining sound on deceleration, but I did have that rear differential hum some people have had. From what I read, it's not a problem. Getting off-road tires helped - I can barely hear it now :D

Same here, the burning smell is probably just the truck breaking in. I have not had the whining noise, however.

For anyone elses future reference, They found the issue here and it was excessive play in one of the pinion gears that was causing the whine/howling. The prominent situation that caused it was coasting down from 65ish to 45 ish with the worst of it being between 54 and 52.

the solution is a warranty replacement of the whole diff (or just the third member, not gotten clarification yet) as stated by the service manager.

75 miles into a brand new tundra :annoyed:

Sorry to hear that, that certainly sucks. :( With only 75 miles on it, I would demand they take it back and give you a new one, but that's just me. Good luck, and hope they take good care of you.

its a lunar rock pro, so there isnt really any replacing of it. I am considering a trade in on it once they fix it though for an sr5 plus cash. Ive already been offered +8k from 2 other dealers. Might need to for peace of mind. We’ll see

From my past experiences, if you have something gone wrong in the manufacturing process it will show up pretty quick. In your case, very quickly and thankfully it did. You were not stranded far from home on a family vacation or in some remote location off-roading.

I wouldn’t get rid of your truck over this little issue. Hell, racers change out third members all the time at the track and the reason for the popularity of this style axle design.

Its been 2 weeks since i got it back and so far no issues. Toyota is looking in to potentially reimburse me for my first payment since i didnt have the truck in my possession for 4 weeks. Also during the repair the dealership dameged aome parts but they are replacing them. Inconvenient but not a big issue since its getting taken care of.

Finally got confirmation that they are replacing the entire differential. Case and all. The pinion was shimmed so poorly it caused the gear to grind on the case(or so they say). Not sure how that works and have yet to see pictures, but soonest i get it back is Saturday. Anyone want to buy a trd pro LR CM for 57k? I might be picking up a 4runner soon.

Nah, not yet. Parts started rolling in for it as well, so gonna stick it out for another couple thousand miles at least. Just a bit pissed that my brand new quite expensive truck has been laid up for about as long as Ive owned it. There will always be that voice in the back of my head now that keeps whispering to me about mechanic tightened bolts, tolerances, parts, etc... in a brand new truck that should not have been touched till 100k+ miles.

Dang buddy, I just saw this. I rolled by in my Lunar Rock this morning but didn't see yours in the driveway. I guess now I know why. Hope they can get it resolved ASAP and you can find peace of mind, one way or another. If you ever need to compare anything going forward, give me a holler and we can take mine for a spin. I just hit 1800 miles, but I had the "burnt" smell too for the first few hundred.

Hey Surfmonkey if you decide to sell it you better add another 10,000 on top of that asking price. The way the prices are on the toyotas. Where I got my LunaRock from my dealer they had my 2020 AG 4runner pro listed for $61,000. And sold it. Also I thought about the same thing when I got my tundra about the reliability compared to my 4runner Pro. I would drive it for a while. You have nothing to lose.

My dad bought a 2021 4Runner and had it in the shop at 300 miles due to a faulty battery.

Random things happen. Even with Toyotas.

Maybe see if they'll give you a 100k powertrain warranty to ease your mind?

Sucks you've had issues, but glad they're trying to make it right. Tough call on selling for a 4R - we have both and love both. Plus, if you can sell for +$8-$10k, that'll cover almost 25% of MSRP on a decently equipped 4R. Just depends on your needs/wants.

    Best of luck going forward!

Thanks boys. Will hit up Toyota if it lasts longer than this week.

I think Ive calmed sufficiently about having a problem pop up so early. Fingers crossed their mechanic knows what they're doing. Anything specific I should inspect when I get it home? Plan is to pull out the torque wrench and confirm fastener torque values and all lines and fittings and make sure they didnt gouge the shit out of things when swapping the diff. Another dealer had to perform a warranty fix on the roof console under the headliner in my old taco and they used a screwdriver to take off all of the fastener covers and torqued the shit out of the rear seatbelts when re-assembling, so had to have them fix that, but the diff is a different beast so if anyone know what to look for there, would appreciate it.

And looking at prices on these trucks around the country, I can't believe how much they are actually selling for. Who the hell is buying at those prices?!? There is one in the PNW private party someone is asking $70k for 0_o and a dealer got their hands on a used one. Priced it at $72k https://www.rodlandtoyota.com/auto/used-2021-toyota-tundra-trd-pro-everett-wa/56893348/

Decided to sell and get into a 4runner. The warranty work is bugging me so bad I dont want to drive it, so going to offload while its at its most valuable. Current offer is 60k from vroom, getting appraisals from a few dealers as well, and already but a deposit on a trd offroad premium 4runner. No need for the pro with a t4r since it will get modified to hell anyway.

Might put it up private party too to see what offers come in. I might be able to use it for leverage on extras for the 4runner from the dealer. ¯\(°_o)/¯ Who knows.

I have Tundra and 18 4runner, you are going to like the quality and engineering of the new ride. Honestly I would have two 4runners if not pulling heavy loads. When you want a truck just get a hitch mounted basket or a trailer and you will be set. Smart move!!

I know how you feel. About a month after I bought my truck, occasionally my AC/heat would work just fine...but would ONLY come out the defrost vents. I had a few days of "OMG I thought Toyotas were supposed to be PERFECT" and all that (lol) until I calmed down.

It took one hell of a long time to fix solely because it would only show up like every 34th start (seriously), but it was found and fixed (some HVAC solenoid sensor or something). Has been 100% fine since then.

Obviously, a huge difference between a sensor and an entire freakin' differential, but goofballs on all different manufacturing lines can have a bad day, I guess. LOL

I know that "pit of my stomach" feeling too. It takes a while to regain confidence in the vehicle that you have purchased with very high expectations. My new 2021 Tundra currently has 1,900 miles on it. After carefully breaking in the engine I took my truck in last month for an oil change at 1,000 miles. The Service Manager initially told me that I didn't need to change the oil that soon but I'm glad I took it in. During the oil change the Service Manager came to me and told me they were keeping my truck because they found a coolant leak during the multi-point inspection.

Had I waited longer to get the oil change who knows what damage overheating could have possibly done to the new engine if I had run low on coolant. The issue they found was insufficient sealant placed on the heat exchanger that sits on top of the engine under the intake manifold. Toyota replaced the heat exchanger cover and all the gaskets and had the original one sent back to them for inspection. I was without my truck for 10 days but the dealer gave me a 2021 Tacoma with 58 miles on it as a loaner until I got my truck back.

So now after checking the coolant level on the truck daily I've regained confidence in the truck. But it does takes a while when you have high expectations of the new vehicle you just bought.
