I believe all of the Sequoias lost the external ATF cooler back in 2010 when the tow rating dropped from 9+ to 7000 pounds. Toyota had plenty of time to test this setup. There’s plenty of 200000 mile 2nd gen Sequoias running around today, but the percentage of people towing with an SUV is a lot smaller than with the truck. I still don’t feel like the transmission warmer / heat exchanger is sufficient enough especially if you decide to do a lift and 35 inch tires.

Wow manual does say tow in S4 and no faster than 65 mph. Looks like an external cooler isn't needed at that snail pace.

Did the wording in the manual change between 2018 (cooler) and 2019 (no cooler)? Can someone with a 2018 or earlier verify this?

I've always towed my 6500 5th in 5th gear with t/h engaged at around 65, unless I hit some mountain passes. That's going back to 2012 first with my 08 and now with my 19. The 65 is more on account of trailer tires than anything as I've read many issues when towing at high speed, like blowouts. Oh and gas mileage.

Did the Sequoia move to an integrated condenser/transmission cooler like the Tundra, or did it go to no transmission cooling way back in 2010?

I agree S5 with T/H is the sweet spot as I pull my 5Klb boat between 68-72 (2400 rpms). If on smooth flat road S6 at 75-78 (2400 rpms). My trailer tires rated at 85 mph.

Keeping RPM above 2K negates alot of the shifting up and down. So you can hold in lower gear or go faster to get above 2K rpms

2nd gen Sequoias initially had the integrated A/C condenser and ATF cooler just like the Tundra and my previous 2018 Tahoe 5.3 with max tow package. Since 2010 only the hockey puck.

    I’m confused now.

The 2nd gen Tundra had a separate cooler 2007-2010, then integrated cooler 2010-2018, then puck only 2019-2021. I would have thought the Sequoia with Tow Package would be the same, but maybe you are talking about Sequoia without tow package having only the puck since 2010?

You are right. Just found a picture of used 2010 Platinum with ATF cooler lines in the front. Must be the one with towing package.

What a fantastic kit. Phoenix ambient temps are forecasted for 117 next week☀️.
Already noticing SIGNIFICANTLY lower temps on the pan. Ready to tow with confidence.
In March from Page Az to Flagstaff , I saw 270 degrees with a 3,000 lb trailer ( no cooler)
    Thank you!

I'm pretty sure the 5.7l engine, be it Tundra or Sequoia, had the auxilliary trans cooler through 2018. The 4.6l engine did not have the aux cooler, maybe that's what you're thinking of.

@Terndrerrr has been mentioning the new AC refrigerant necessitated the deletion of the air-to-liquid external ATF cooler, don't know why it would be so.

Anyway, the chasenicholas kit gets rave reviews and apparently doesn't affect the AC at all, so FU Toyota and good on chasenicholas. I ordered the kit but don't know if it has been installed. The '19 Seq I bought was donated to an animal rescue outfit and I'm not a "helicoptor donor" so to speak, I buy vehicles and recommend enhancements. It's up to them to do it or not, I don't hover around trying to micro-manage. They have so much on their plate I don't be annoying asking if they used the napkins.

Not all 5.7s had the tow package. Those without it didn't have the cooler or the tow/haul button. Later on all 5.7 Tundras did get the towing package with the tow/haul button, cooler, and eventually the integrated trailer brake controller, but 2019+ the coolers were dropped from ALL Tundras.

I'm not sure if that's official info or forum speculation, but apparently...
The air-to-liquid cooler went missing right when they switched to more eco-friendly (and apparently less efficient) refrigerant. More info here:

I was referring to this video where the 2012 Platinum Sequoia 5.7 4x4 didn’t have the external trans cooler which was retrofitted:
    https://youtu.be/41UM0Hg1-Wc
    https://youtu.be/YF2Y8TXw990
I understand the attempt to get more views and refer to that vehicle as Toyota Tundra.

Thanks much for the BITOG link. Very nice that the OP provided a Blackstone report on page six. So, taking the OP at his word the factory-fill WS is durable on a 2019 for at least 18k miles towing 7k lbs occasionally and reaching 260 degrees pan temp sometimes. Chasenicholas kit is still the way to go IMO.

tow haul mode changes throttle input. For example instead of a 1:1 ratio of pedal to throttle plate it 1;5 for example. It is a substantial difference in acceleration. I wouldnt turn it on at a light you may hit the person in front of you when you go.... it will lurch.

That's why I bought the cooler. I just run in plain old "D" even when towing. Truck seems to handle it just fine. Downhills and freeway off-ramps are the only times I run in S and then I manually "downshift" to get some engine braking.

This makes sense in context, I can see D working for highway towing. For me, towing is mostly backroads with steep hills and curves and speed changes (20-60 mph), constant shifting - for this, the slightly higher rpms of S mode helps maintain towing power. Max torque on the 5.7L is at 3600 rpm, but even 2000 vs 2400 rpm delivers a noticeable difference in torque.

Thanks! That's what I thought it did. Just used it after buying a new boat and there is a "real" difference for the better when driving.

push it while you are applying throttle without moving the gas pedal. You will accelerate but not downshift. Only thing which changes is throttle input vs gas pedal. Very similar to Pedal commander.

Yes but that result can be from many inputs such as ignition timing and fuel mapping. Throttle data is probably a very small equation when tow haul is applied. I've never seen any info from Toyota on what actuators are manipulated when tow haul is activated.

Don't kid yourself Toyota isn't that sophisticated. Its identical to Pedal commander (except doesn't hold transmission gears). It just changes ratio of accelerator pedal input to throttle response. Pedal commander openly explains how it works except they have multiple ratios (24?)

...but how do you now that? I just retired as a Toyota dealer tech and I've never seen any info on what parameters are change when tow haul is activated.

The Sequoia install is done and looks almost OEM. Will need some time to collect trans temperatures under different driving conditions, but so far it is consistently lower than before.
