Don't Forget to Change Rear Differential Oil

Here's mine as of yesterday. Looks like tar coming out that bitch.

Drained into a trail mix container and a kimchi container, soon to be dumped all into the kimchi container.

 

I'm pretty sure that just means it's well seasoned, like an iron cooking pan. It's not a problem, it's a feature.

 

Should I use it to "season" my truck's undercarriage?

 

How many miles since last fluid change?

 

I bought the truck at 178k, it's currently at 180k. My best guess is the last fluid change was 180k miles ago.

 

Did you get your schnozz right up to that-thar gear oil and take a deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep lung cleansing whiff???

You might be surprised how many trucks are running around out there with a quarter million miles + on the OEM rear diff oil.

Full disclosure: I did mine at 55,000 miles. It was gray in color.

 

Mine was dark, but didn't have the rotten egg smell I hear everyone talking about.

 

I got my szhnoggin' in that-thar and took a whiffun, it smells like shit.

 

My trucks at 145,000 and not sure if its ever been done, next oil change should I ask mechanic to go ahead and change oil?

 

This thread is great so far. Whenever I change my diff fluid my garage stinks like hell for weeks.

 

I love kimchi! Costco near me has started carrying a very tasty brand. Unfortunately my wife can’t stand to get anywhere near it, or a differential for that matter.

I did mine at 169k and was expecting the worst. Came out looking like it was just changed. Same for the transmission fluid. I guess I got lucky and purchased from a guy who was on top of the maintenance.

 

Try catching the oil in a container instead of letting it run all over the floor.

I use a tray to catch the fluid and pour that into a 5 liter jug. The tray and funnel stink afterwards no matter how much I wipe them down. I think the stink really depends on which fluid you use.

 

Probably Kimchi residual odor.

 

The first change is always the worst. I changed mine at 30k new and it came out thick and gray. Ever since then it’s been clean. If the first change has never been done I would expect it to be black like what the OP shows.

 

1) Chop an entire large head of cabbage kimchi, the red kind. 1" to 3" pieces of kimchi will do. Throw it into a low/medium heat frying pan.
2) 5 mins later, add a sleeve of bacon into the pan with the chopped kimchi. Don't add oil at all, let the bacon fat dew its thang. Turn the heat up to medium/high.
3) Fry it all up together until the bacon is ~crispy~. The kimchi will infuse the bacon with kimchi flavor and the bacon will infuse the kimchi with bacon flavor.
4) Serve on a steamy bed of white rice.

Oooooh baby, I guarantee you will change your tune.

 

Doing this service tomorrow.

Last done at about 50K.... now at 140K. At 50K the fluid still looked good and had no real odor.

Now my brother’s old Toyota Matrix 5 speed with 150K that he never changed the gear oil in.... yeah he was working in my area staying with us about 5 years ago and his transmission started acting funny. Turns out it was bad, very bad, but we changed the gear oil to see if it would help, and it had the viscosity of water and smelled like death.

At least the fresh gear oil made it possible to limp it up to a scrap yard and avoid a tow bill.

 

I always though kimchi was fermented cabbage?

Thanks for your recipe! However, just not a cabbage fan here. Cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, none of it. Just not my thing. I was really referencing Korean Kimchi that has been fermented. Regardless, I much prefer smoked brisket and green beans or cob corn for a vegetable.

 

My friend, Korean Kimchi is usually made of cabbage or radish. Use the cabbage variety. Trust me and try cooking what I've laid out, it will cost you a collective $15 and 20 minutes or less.

I dunno man, I had too wiki kimchi. I'm not sure about that forbidden cabbage...
