Strange and Annoying Cruise Control Problem

OK, so I hate the Tundra's adaptive cruise control (ACC, RCC, whatever you want to call it). I've spent a lot of time driving Honda and Chevrolet vehicles with ACC and their systems are WAY smarter, smoother, and overall better than the Tundra's. It's just a shame that Toyota didn't do better with it.

That having been said, the option of using the standard "Constant Speed Cruise Control" doesn't seem to be much better. I've noticed that, unlike in ACC mode, the constant speed mode does not allow you to quickly push the lever up or down in succession for 1 MPH increase or decrease increments. Sometimes it works, sometimes you have to lay on it to get the adjustment to move. Very annoying and I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

If the constant speed worked like it used to in older vehicles, I'd probably use it over the substandard ACC. For example, the speed limit goes up (or traffic ahead clears), you push it up 7 times to increase 7 MPH and you're set at the new speed. But, for whatever reason, it doesn't. Very annoying. Anyone else notice this?

adaptive cruise control on any vehicle that I have driven sucked. MUCH prefer the standard systems.

Mine works fine. No complaints. And sets the new speed based on the lever. Whatever I set it to is the max speed it will go. Set it for 70 if you want in a 45. It’ll still go 45 if traffic is going 45.

To clarify, the problem behavior I'm describing happens in Constant Speed Mode. Adaptive Mode sucks but I'm referring to Constant Speed Mode here.

I guess I didn’t even know there was a constant speed mode?

Yes, you toggle between modes by holding down the CRUISE ON/OFF button.

I really like the adaptive. And would not go back. So I guess I’m not help! I wish my Ford had the adaptive.

ACC is a great concept. In some vehicles, and with some driving styles, it works well. In the Tundra, it is slow and unrefined. That having been said, this thread is about issues I’m having with constant speed mode.

    In the process of de-chroming....
I really like the adaptive cruise. My one gripe is.. Lets say cruise is set to 70. It slows to 65 for a car in front. The car brakes just a little 50mph and exits off. The Tundra slows also, then realizes there is no more car and FLOORS IT. 50 back to 70 as fast as possible. I don't understand how this made it into production. I know Subaru's adaptive cruise has three settings for the resume cruise. Why don't these? Why is it so abrupt?

I’m telling ya...if you get a chance to drive a Honda or Chevrolet, you will be amazed at how well and seamlessly the ACC works.

Mine works flawlessly. No issues on long trips and can easily adjust speed in 1 mph increments up or down. Maybe the dealership needs to do a software update of some kind. I had some phantom PCS lights pop up when I first got the truck. But after some recall updates, I haven’t even seen the PCS light or have any issues in over 2.5 years.

Good info, thanks. I'll try to get a video of the behavior I'm describing and post it, just to make sure we're talking about the same thing.

Here’s a video showing what I’m talking about. First I show radar cruise mode, which adjusts normally. Then I switch to constant speed mode, which doesn’t respond like it should.

The video helped. I’ll try this in the 2020 Sport next time and report back. I’ve only tried ACC mode and 1 mph increments work fine

Does anything happen if you hold the stalk in position instead of toggling it?

    Mods, what mods?
This has something to do with throttle by wire. I read somewhere on this forum that the cruise control throttle mapping is different than the throttle mapping of the pedal.

I only know this because in that thread someone was complaining about the Pedal Commander. :notsure:

What's funny is that the current ACC is the exact same system that I had on my 2004 Lexus LS430. It took Toyota that long to adapt the same system.

I think your cruise control arm is just acting funny.

My static cruise works as you’d expect. A bump up=1 mile incremental increase in speed, 2 bumps=2mph, etc...

Also, my adaptive cruise works very nicely. My only gripe would be that it cuts off under 27mph, and I know other manufacturers have versions that will help you creep in bumper to bumper traffic.

We bought my daughter a Touring CRV with adaptive cruise, and I wouldn’t say it’s any “smoother” or more refined than the Tundra.

Don’t get me started on Chevy. $70k+ Tahoe, 2021, and the sick bastards wouldn’t even include it.

So even in Constant Speed Mode, you can bump yours up by 10 MPH and the set speed follows? If so, do you think I need a new CC stalk?

Yes, just like every other vehicle I’ve driven that had cruise, and that is ALOT of vehicles.

It’s in essence a switch. There is something wrong with either the input device (the cruise stalk) or the computer that is being given the input. I think this will have to be a dealership trip.

... We all wish you well.

Tried this again today for the OP.

In dynamic cruise, the mph increase rapidly corresponding to the number of times the cruise stalk is bumped up. Similarly, the mph decreases as you’d expect with each bump of the cruise stalk downward.

Switching to static, I tried again. Each time the cruise lever is pushed up or down, the mph bumps up or down.

However, I tried quickly toggling the cruise up and down to see if the mph adjusted in lockstep with the number of bumps up and down, and it really didn’t.

If I bump the lever up 5 times quickly, it seems to only register 3 or 4 of the inputs, not 5. It’s as though there is a slight lag. If I push the stalk more slowly and deliberately the mph does ratchet up as expected.

This is curious, because in dynamic cruise, the sensitivity and responsiveness is spot on. This makes me doubt the hardware is faulty.

This suggests either a deliberate safety feature, or a software glitch.

I really never use the static cruise, and I am satisfied with the dynamic, so for me it is a curiosity, not a concern.

Thanks for testing this out. Confirms what I am experiencing in my 2020 Platinum. And like you said, very curious since they were obviously able to make it work in radar cruise mode. Hmmmm...very frustrating. I wonder if there's a way to report issues like this directly to Toyota. Anyone know?

I'm thinking safety issue because my wife's 2013 Corolla (which only has standard cruise) exhibits similar behaviour.

I will check this on mine as wel. I never use constant speed cruise. My erk with the adaptive is it'll slow you down when someone is slowing to turn which is fine but then it thinks you're going to rear end them when they are already out of the way and start beeping and slamming on the brakes for you. At this point, lightly pressing the throttle will over ride the safety feature. Same thing when you're on the interstate and someone slow cuts you off. It'll slow you down but you can over ride it.

I agree the the radar cruise control is not great, it over reacts and I typically just turn it off if someone changes a lane in front of me because I know it will slam on the brakes for no reason. That said I had no idea I can turn it off and use constant speed instead of radar, how do I do that?

So I had one of my coworkers try this on his 2020 SR5 and it misbehaved the same way. What’s the process for reporting issues to Toyota? No was this was intentional, as RCC/ACC acts as it should.

Just hold down the CRUISE ON button till it switches over. As I showed in my video though, it sucks too (for a different reason).

I tested my standard and adaptive today on the way to work. Both work fine, but differently in adjustments of speed.

In adaptive: A small press up or down and it goes 1km/hr up or down. A longer press and it goes to the nearest 5km/hr increment and then up or down 5km/hr more either way, so always ends on a 5km/hr interval.

In standard: A small press or down and it goes 1km/hr up or down. A longer press and it goes up constantly (slowly) by 1km/hr increments and there is no 5 km/hr preset stopping points.
