Ever Replaced the Roof?

Previous owner had a tree limb fall on the roof. He took it somewhere that just popped the dents out, threw some bondo on and called it good. It's definitely at a point where I need to address it sooner rather than later.

I'm going to take it into the body shop and get an estimate (hold onto your butts), but while surfing the parts site for my upcoming belt replacement I got sidetracked:

This diagram also shows the various roof supports. I'm thinking about pulling the headliner for a better inspection myself. I'm no welder, so I'd still have to find someone capable, but has anyone ever braved a roof replacement?

 

Check and see if Certifit has a panel for your truck. As for welding they may be epoxied, i will have to ask my brother. Good luck

Check out panel bond by 3m. It's amazing.

 

I've done it by buying a cab, cutting it off 6" down from the roof line and welding on the old cab. Wasn't a bad job at all.
If you can buy just the skin you should be able to use the 3M panel bond mentioned above.

 

I can't recommend 3M Panel Bond enough. That stuff is fantastic.
Pull the headliner, see what it'll take to remove the old panel, and you should be able to install a new roof panel without too much headache. Really, there's no welding required.

 

@empty_lord I believe did some major repairs to his csn.

 

Never done it on my Tundra but I have for a few race projects with carbon fiber and aluminum.
It's easier than it seems and 3m panel bond is great like the others said.

Not a first-timer job though, so have someone that has done it before to help you.

Make the thing the first ever tundra convertible! Have some type of top made like a jeep has.

 

Quote came back. This is from the local Toyota dealership, and is about $2,000 less than I expected: $3,192 (if the roof braces don’t have to be replaced)

 

Not sure on these trucks, but if it has drip rails it’s usually as simple as some drilling of spot welds and re welding them with the new.
But first gen tacomas were brazed on and way different

 

You should fill in the dents and then put a layer of carbon fiber on top. Then you just clear coat over and blend the paint on the sides to cover the seams. Easy Peasy.

 

Someone jumped on the roof of my 2015 mustang like four years ago (no I don't know who or why) and it was $10k to get it replaced.

That’s a fair estimate. If you’ve got the coin go for it. A diy, first timer with panel bond is gonna make a mess. The smallest pinhole turns into a nearly imposssible to track down water leak. Also, gluing a roof is no longer an approved practice. Weld bonding is the norm. Couple who almost died in Texas when their glued roof peeled open put the industry on notice with some BIG lawsuit wins.

 

Any competent body shop can do it. I think the quote you got looks very fair too.

 

Thanks all, I’m leaning heavily towards having the shop do it. It’s a 3 week lead time before they have availability + parts.

 

Post some progress pictures if they’ll let you. Interested to see if there’s a lot of rot underneath.

 

That would have to be otherwise an exceptionally clean vehicle for me to consider dropping that much $$ for aesthetics. I’d make another go at a cosmetic repair first if it were me.

 

I forgot to mention that water is leaking through the roof and there is an excessive amount of wind noise.

 

I finally saw one of these out in the wild (king Soopers) last weekend.

 

I'm frankly surprised they never caught on. People love Jeep Scramblers (me included), and you could argue the Dakota convertable is slightly more functional. But to me there's something about it that just feels off.

 

Thing about being open to Nature is this possibility. Fabios schnozz got shmacked by a Goose. He has really good looking Hands. Notice how he doesn’t want to use them to touch anything yet his hair is perfect after the coster ride!

 

As an update: picked it up from the dealer today. Took them basically 8 business days to do new roof & paint. Had a small one day delay waiting on new weatherstripping, else they would've had it done in 7.

Edit: Yeah, that's the dash cam hanging down. Windshield was also replaced and will need to get a new piece of adhesive for the cam.

 

Nice! Not bad for $3k. Hopefully they did it well and it'll last at least 10 years before the paint chips off.
