Which 1st Gen should I buy?

I am wondering if i Should buy a 1st Gen limited 06 with 267k miles for $7k (in excellent condition) or one with 88k for $16k? I could pay cash for 1st one but have to finance the 2nd one.

267k truck is immaculate just has a lot of miles.

what should I do?

The 1st would be my choice. You go with what you can afford, especially if you plan to keep it for some time.

 

OP, I assume you gave that last 2006 truck you bought back to the dealership due to the frame. This time make sure there’s no frame rot and that any rust is just surface rust. Also check the bed for rust/holes under any bed liner.

 

Those are both ridiculous numbers in there own way.
Don't be fooled that there is not normal pricing out there....just wait till it comes along. The 7 grand sounds way better

7 grand is far cheaper than what I see on Craigslist for these trucks. Why are they only asking that much if excellent condition? Is it DC/AC, 4wd? For financing you need to ask yourself how much you will really be paying over the long run. 3x versus the one your can afford? I would thoroughly vet the 7k one. What is wrong/what does it need? Why the good deal? Is this a private sale or a dealership? Also, where are you located? Sounds like maybe in rust country?

 

I don't see a bank financing 16k on a 15 year old truck. You'd probably get some high interest tote the note loan on that. First one sounds fine.

 

Need full mechanical and repair/rebuild report before making assessments.

Yep, I learned my lesson. The dealer did a buy back and I saw it listed somewhere for $17k.

 

I am checking it out tomorrow. I will make sure it checks out. Thank the Lord I was dealing with a reputable company.

Good questions.

I’m gonna check out the truck tomorrow. It’s a DC and is in NJ. I learned my lesson last time. Previous owner traveled back and forth to NJ. I’ll get Carfax and get my mechanic to check out the truck. I’d rather spend $100 than $7000.

 

Saw the vehicle today and found the following:

1. 4WD button would not work
2. Driver side front fender was damaged, scraping the door.
3. Front passenger side fender accent piece missing and floodlight not working.

 

So much for “excellent”

 

Found a few problems.

1. Frame was good
2. 4WD would not work - may be actuator.
3. Possible damage to front driver side tire. Door is hitting the front
Quarter panel.
4. Timing belt changed at 107k but has 267k on it now.

 

Well that sux, sounds like the search continues.

 

Well the 05 and the 06 double cabs have the best gas mail ahe and an updated motor and tranny, and still not to big in comparison to the access cab 1st gens. But I would say stick with 1st gen, and diversify.

 

I'd take a HARD look at that one with 88,000 miles for $16k. If it is as pristine as the miles suggest, and what you want, even $16k in 2019 would be tempting. That's nearly a new truck...

$7000 / 265000 miles = You're paying 2 cents per mile
$16000 / 88,000 miles = You're paying 18 cents per mile

Keep in mind, the lower miles Tundra is going to save you probably $5000 win maintenance over the next decade versus the higher miles one. They aren't super expensive or maintenance intense, but at 265,000 any vehicle is going to need this or that. A few hundred here, a few thousand there, etc.

If it passes inspection, I'd do some hard negotiating. How much cash have you got? I'd certainly remind the seller it's due for a timing belt and other service that will cost about $1200 right off the price. If you can swing $13,000, even with a small personal loan, that would be a really nice truck. Over the life of the truck a few thousand dollars, while painful, is meaningless in the long term.

 

The $16K vehicle is gone. The owner of the high mileage truck reduced the price and gave me the parts he was going to put on the truck himself. Might be a better financial move to go with a cheaper vehicle.

 

Pics of the one left for consideration? Post whatever you can and you'll get a lot of free opinions (worth only slightly more than what you pay for them) but some extra eyes always helps.
