Hey everyone. I just picked up a 2013 5.7 limited worrier today with 33” tires. I purchased it knowing this issue, and planning to fix it. trying to get some input where to start.

If you start the truck it takes 8 seconds of cranking to turn over randomly hiccups on this too . Once it’s on if you start it within 30 minutes it starts fine like normal. It’s only cold starts it sitting for 45 min or more. I tried turning the ignition on for 5-10 seconds before cranking but that doesn’t help. Any other ideas? Pressure regulator?

Is it Flex Fuel (should say E85 on the gas cap I think)? The engine code should be either 3UR-FE (regular) or 3UR-FBE (Flex Fuel), someone correct me if I messed that up. Do you smell gasoline like it's flooding/flooded?

Hmm. I really haven't read anything about the Fuel Pressure Regulators going bad. Assuming that it drives fine otherwise. It might not hurt to check the Mass Airflow Sensor and the Throttle Body to see that they're clean. Otherwise I'm already kind of starting to grasp at straws to be honest.

I would check fuel pressure, maybe the pump is weak. There’s probably a check valve somewhere too and maybe that is bad. Other than that, what @Wynnded said.

So this morning I turned the ignition on for 15 seconds listened for the fuel pump to prime. Did this 3 times before starting and it started perfectly.

So this is good information/feedback/troubleshooting/data as I've recently read that Tundra fuel pumps don't "prime" like you can hear the ones on GM trucks do. The exception might be if the pressure has been bleeding down and your keying it on a few times is restoring it. I wonder if a single key-on sequence might be enough, key on and waiting 5-10 seconds before engaging the starter. Presumably Tundras should be maintaining adequate pressure and this experience is now making my wonder about the Fuel Pressure Regulator as you mentioned. Something to put into the ear of a shop if you're not able to monitor this yourself and are going to be taking it in to one.

Side note. From your posted video, I noticed that you hold the key in the START position while cranking. The Tundras have a Crank-to-Start function where you only need to "bump" the key and the system will crank until the engine either starts or 10-15 seconds elapses. Pretty cool.

I find that feature pretty cool. I irritated my buddy the other day when I drove his SRT 10 Ram with the push button start. You still have to put the key in and turn it before you hit the big red button to start it. I just pressed the button and released, he’s like what the fuck are you doing? LMFAO I was waiting for it to continue cranking and start. Not so much. He likes how bare-bones his truck is. No traction control etc. which means he doesn’t like the crank to start feature. That truck is pretty fun to drive though.

I wonder if it’s possible the fuel pump is going bad. Some type of anti-leak down feature causing it to release pressure back into the fuel tank. Hopefully it’s not releasing raw fuel into the engine. Maybe sticky fuel injectors could cause some thing like that. Like they’re stuck open. Just spit balling

Ya, I drive several different vehicles at work. Some have the crank feature and some don't and I can't keep track, so sometimes I have to try again, lol.

I think he'd notice the smell of unburned gasoline in that case and the engine would run rough on initial startup. I don't know for certain, but I would consider the FPR an anti-leak down device.

Really appreciate the input. I have an appointment at Toyota Tuesday to get an ecm recall done and they are going to check out my issue. If it’s the fuel pump I’m definitely going to order the parts to get the 38gallon tank while I’m there. Truck came with a third party warranty and fuel pump is covered so hopefully that works out. I am a mechanic for my job just not on cars, just on pharmaceutical equipment. So no gas just electric stuff and hydraulic systems. but been a car guy my whole life and know how to turn a wrench.

I’m going to try next time to just let the ignition on for 15 seconds just one time next time. I do hear the fuel pump priming so maybe that’s going bad if it’s working extra hard and shouldn’t be loud like you said.

I did the key like you mentioned that’s an awesome feature thanks for the heads up!

There's also a fuel pump control module that folks have had fail. This is a part that goes on a whole bunch of different Toyotas and isn't particularly expensive to buy as a pull.

Could be a leaky injector, bleeding off pressure while its off.
