What’s your MPG and tire size??

I know. I know. Another tire thread. But before I spend upwards to $1200 for a new set of supposedly lighter tires. I’m wondering what the real world MPG’s are with various sizes and brands. I currently run Falken wildpeaks AT3 275/70r18 and get 12.6 with TRD PRO suspension.

 

My 4.6 gets 15mpg with Wildpeak AT3's in 295/70/18 with an OME 612 lift

 

275-70-18 nitto RG everything else stock and I’m at 16.4 combined city/hywy.

 

4 more mpg over TundaLLama. Big difference in mpg. >20% mpg?

 

All depends how you drive.

Yeah this is key. I drive like an old man. I don't know how the 5.7 guys do it, i would be lead footed with that all day long.

yes indeed! I think its the tires plus I mainly do city driving. I just had spark plugs replaced and through some chevron fuel injector cleaner in and nothing. That said, my boss has a Tundra with the stock michelins and gets 13.1. I am leaning towards Toyo open country AT3s.

 

Driving has a lot to do with it. In Utah we have 80mph interstates, I'm lucky if I get 13mpg with cruise set at 85 and just pure highway with minimal stops and starts. This past weekend I did a 500 mile round trip through the mountains, with the average speed around 60-65 probably and got 15+mpg. My truck is apples and oranges comparison to you, but even if they were identical trucks how you accelerate, maintain speed, average speed, etc. play a larger role in your mpg than tire size.

Unless you're doing a significant change, I doubt you'll notice much if any change in mpg. My thought process is worst mpg = driving faster = arriving faster = less time driving, and time = money so I'm saving overall

 

IMO your foot is more important than any tires in your realized MPG. There is only so much you can do with a 5600lb brick shaped vehicle powered by a big V8 with 4.30 gears. I was getting a tad over 17 with my TSS with the factory 20" AT tires for the 2700 miles I owned it The first calculation on my TRD Sport, with the 20" all season type tires was 16.7, but that was only a 12 gallon fill-up (38 gallon tank) and included a lot of idling and short trips, etc. I expect my third fill-up to be indicative of what will be my normal..hope to have that be a 25 gallon fill. But I do understand MPG is a very emotional stat, and a weird source of pride and/or stress for some. After driving Accords for 30 years, even if I hit 19 MPG with my Tundra (a pipe dream), that would still SUCK by comparison.

 

5.7, Nitto Ridge Grappler, 285/70/18, i get 13.8 that’s street during the week , I don’t take the freeway to work. But when I travel to CA I normally get around 14.6 CC at 70mph.

 

295/60R20 ridge grapplers stock suspension and I'm sitting steady at 13.8 mixed highway and city driving.

 

Running 295/70R18 on my Tundra 5.7 Crewmax with a pedal commander on Sport +2 lifted 4" and I'm getting 12.6 MPG. The trick is more air in. Get the G-Tek Fab, dual air intake kit along with an AFE throttle body spacer. I custom made my air intake Tube out of the Spector 4" aluminum 22 degree tube, with a couple of stainless barbs for your crank case and vacuum lines, and Mishimoto silicone couplers one 4" hump coupler, and one 3.5" - 4" coupler. Note with the TRD air Box you get more air volume in and the TRD filter allows better air flow. When your truck can breath it uses a little less fuel. These trucks run awfully rich though. Once I have my exhaust on then I will get a programmer to lean it out just a little. This should increase milage further. Too bad they don't have an even higher Octane fuel for these engines. BTW you may want to switch to a more efficient oil. I'm running Neo Synthetics 5/20 oil and it definitely helps, engine purrs and sounds like a banshie when I get on throttle, intake set up done properly does make a difference though.

14 mpg with a 5.7 running 275/60/20 KO2s about 33".
Same mpg when I had 285/55/20 KOs.
2.5" lift/level with 6112/5160s and Toytec shackles set on 1".
My next tire will be 275/60/20 Copper AT3 XLTs in a couple months.

Having a @dirtydeeds 10" BAM doesn't help me keep my foot out of it.
I like to hear it.
I just go, I don't care about gas mileage.
When it gets to 1/4 tank I fill it back up...

 

I have P285/70r17's and I average 16.7 now. I dumped my e rated goodyears. With those I was getting 13.5.....I bought the Les Schwabb Open Range at. They r pretty sweet. Made by Sumitumo tire company. Super quiet which I now enjoy since the GY's were so damn loud. And they only had 6500 miles on them. Cant even imagine how worse they would have gotten as the milage piled up.

 

I don't know how anyone with 33-35 off-road tires is getting gas milage greater than 11-12 with mods. You must be going super slow everywhere, like a bunch of old men waiting in line at the DMV. i mean I live in San diego and I have hills to climb everyday and thought 12.6 miles to the gallon was good. i think that this thread should include a pic of the dash legend with Gas milage on it. Last week i was a little heavier on the gas and was only getting 12.1 MPG.

 

yes, I think I just got lucky with this truck.....my buddy is a Toyota sales manager and he can’t believe the gas mileage I get, He tells people you will only get 14 mpg with a tundra. I thought it would change a lot when I got the bigger heavier tires but it didn’t. Only thing that really affects my mileage is winter time when I let it warm up, goes down to mid 13’s then.

 

I live in town and goes to the country a few times a week with plenty of rolling hills. Max speed 60MPH. City 11-12mpg / Highway 14-15 /11-12 towing my not so tiny camper. 295.70.18 Discoverer AT3 I chose AT3 XLT vs Wildpeaks due to the weight. I was going to get a lighter set of wheels to lessen my rotating mass, but never got to doing that yet. At $1.40 CAD per liter it hurts the pocket, but worth it in my opinion.

2020 stock 1794. TRD exhaust.

I drive 28.2 miles to work....28.2 miles back home.

Houston. 90% hwy.

I avoid traffic by leaving early.

I drive 59mph. cruise control.

I get 17.1 miles per gallon.

no matter what.

mind you, these are ideal driving conditions....so 17.1 is the high side of Tundra MPG.

 

I’m right there with you OP. 12.3 with Falken 275/70 18 on my Pro. I’d say 90 percent is city stop and go traffic.
I might step up a size to 295/70 18 with Cooper At3. About the same weight as the Falkens in a bigger tire.

 

Wildpeak 275/70R 18 with an OME lift and I'm usually around 15 mpg keeping it under 75 mph and taking it easy on hills, plus city driving. On long mostly highway trips I can get 16 mpg, but I really have to work at it.

 

2019 Tundra TRD Sport- General Grabbers AT (like 1 size bigger than OEM)

@75 mph highway 12.5 to 13.2
@55 mph highway 18 to 18.8
@ town driving 10-12 (all year round)

I just don't pass gas stations. Its a Tundra life.

 

With 285/65/20s, which are advertised 34.6 new, I routinely got 14.5 mpg when calculated against actual mileage as the odometer is affected by the tire size. I usually stay within 5mph of the posted speed limit.
