If Toyota scraps the V8 completely I'd question their sanity. Fuel economy is poor (relative to the big 3), but a 10 speed could help. A TT V8 would be incredible, but I don't see it happening unless they've got something special planned for a trx or raptor competitor. TT V6 (if done right) is fine for the weekend warrior IMO, and keep the V8 for reliability and traditionalists' sake.

I have a hard time seeing myself buying a 1/2 ton diesel until it's got a few years on it. All of the emissions stuff seems to be taking a toll on the big 3 regarding of long term reliability.

The half ton ones have more torque, but so much less HP so the tasks they're the best at is very small - tow too little and gas engines are just as good, tow too much and HD diesels are so much better. Used to be highway mileage was a better spot but now hybrids have caught gas engines up.

I think I'm the same as you, I've experienced recent HD diesels and a half ton diesel would just have me wanting more. I'll take a hybrid any day over dealing with diesel emissions for a half ton. I think that questionable reliability is a big reason Toyota is staying away. Many people buy the Tundra because it's more reliable than the big 3, throw a diesel in there and I seriously doubt they could have the most reliable powertrain (other stuff interior wise they'd still be the best, but that stuff is minor).

Wouldn't mind seeing some sort of hybrid E-torque type system for the 5.7 for increased torque numbers but retaining the gas V8 reliability

No need to get fancy, just get a regular hybrid. Bolt on a 150 HP electric PU and a battery big enough for 30 miles of electric and they'd sell like hotcakes. ~550 HP when using both would be awesome. Only issue I see is packaging, the V8 doesn't have much room as it is and now put a electric PU between the engine and the transmission. Gonna need a transmission hump like the Ram 1500 has in the front seats to fit the bellhousing.

I imagine that's similar to how that new powerboost drivetrain is set up? I'm definitely looking forward to what they reveal this week (if it has anything to do with the tundra)

Toyota is the main Olympic sponsor, I imagine that’s when the true major reveal will be.

I’d buy the Tundra with the 3.3 L diesel in a heartbeat. We have a Small 2.0 L diesel in our BMW X3. Cruises at 80 and the overall mpg including city is 35 mpg. We have to add DEF fluid maybe every 10K miles...

I would be interested in a Tundra diesel as well but only after they were out for a few years to see real world maintenance numbers. My last truck was a 6.7 Powerstroke. My hwy mpgs were around 16 if I kept my foot out of it and DEF was about 5 gallons every 1k miles. Its hard to find a station that has DEF at the pump unless you go to the truck stop and the boxes of DEF are expensive. I put 120k trouble free miles on that truck but the diesel maintenance is killer. 14qts of synthetic every 5k miles an 2 $100 fuel filters every 10k. Not to mention cetane booster in every tank. I could pull a house down but the maintenance wasn't worth it. My trailer is half ton "towable" but the diesel made it effortless.

Owned diesels for 20yrs. Went back to gas. If not pulling a load all the time or need the capacity it’s really not worth it. If you live in a cold climate, not pulling a load, mostly short trips at city speeds, it’s not fully going to warm up. The pdf is going to give problems.

Me too, wife & I retired now and no longer need the diesel work truck...can no longer justify the expense however a crew cab with a 6ft bed would be nice...we are also paring down to one vehicle...

Me three on the giving up on diesel. It was more fun prior to 2006, before they took all of the good stuff out of the fuel and then raised the prices. I have a 2015 Ram EcoDiesel 1/2 ton pickup now that I'll be selling soon enough and then I'm done.

Yeah, 5 gallons of DEF for 1K miles - that was a typo, right? 5 gallons would still be a lot for 10k miles.

Lol. It was a typo. It was supposed to say 5 gal for every 5K miles. That was a mix of hwy, heavy traffic and mountain driving(my daily drive). When towing heavy loads the DEF usage was even worse. On the last 4k mile trip I took towing 9k pounds I used about 10 gal.

Hmmmm...now that is interesting. I hadn't seen that. You'd think it would be more efficient to use the same venue to launch everything they had ready at least within the same week, if not the same day.

If I was Toyota, I would be releasing it ASAP. When chips make it to all the trucks sitting, people are going to buy... they’re not going to wait on guesses of what might be released. People are going to need something, sooner rather then later, to keeping them waiting to buy.

I'm betting that the Ford Lightning release may push Toyota to release the Tundra spec early. I always thought it would be the Chicago Auto show in July. But, I'm hedging my bets that it may be before that because of the Lightning.

I like the fenders. Back end looks sporty. Would like a more beefy/manly/aggressive front end.
