That's exactly what it is. Only difference is that in addition to all your camping gear you're bringing along extra stuff:
    - 12k 'Badlands' winch (In case you see someone else get stuck)
    - Little orange fuel cells (In case you forget to get gas)
    - Orange grip plates (In case you get stuck in the campground)
    - A roof rack (for the fuel cells and grip plates)
    - A bed rack (for the rooftop tent)
    - A rooftop tent (So you don't have to sleep with the dog.... or wife/girlfriend)

Here in the Professional Hand Model world, we call it Glamping. You know, Glamorous Camping.

Real camping is like what Pops used to teach us like with a tent on the ground and chopping wood and stuff. Overlanding is look how much money and weight I can add to my truck for Poser Status.

I’m over the overland thing.... been there, Like my Tundra the way is, Simple and reliable. Yet I understand the intrigue of it. I built my previous Vehicle up a lot, with the camper trailer..... And in the end, I enjoy my Tundra a lot more. I’ll be getting a 4x Crewmax and May get a bed camper of some sorts.

Adam, I missed it; have you started a dedicated thread for that pretty RCSB and that trailer, or one for each? It’s time....

I always thought a Fwc in a stock tundra with slightly oversized tires could get you most places and and be sufficient for family overland.
Or a small Offroad camper like what I posted. Just my thoughts

I agree. It s like something has been lost, or maybe I m just old. We never had the creature comforts that is apparently part of camping now a days. But that s what made it so great. Go out in the elements for a few days or week, build your own shelter, sleep on the bumpy rocky ground and live primitive style, and leave all the creature comforts behind. When you get back one appreciates what they have that much more, but also you are left with great memories of how you endured it all:D

Part of what has “ruined” camping or overlanding in the purest sense is the widespread adoption of the Leave No Trace practice. Don’t get me wrong, LNT is good for sustainability and preservation of parks, etc. If everyone who camps chopped wood for fire and shelter, it wouldn’t be long before there’s nothing left in a lot of of places from which to build. It’s called the “tragedy of the commons.” So for the diehards, the advent of creature comforts spelled the inevitable doom of “true” primitive overlanding. But nowadays the commercial market for camping equipment has grown downright intimidating. I’ve seen some camping setups, not the least of which belong to forum members, that would make the kitchen in my damn house blush.

The campers on Portland city streets could learn from "leave no trace". There s fucking garbage all over the place. It s just getting worse, and the city just coddles them.

I know exactly what you mean. The one time I’ve been to Portland was for a work project underneath the I-5/I-84 interchange just east of the Willamette River. Lots of “urban campers” as they called them. FWIW, it’s just as bad in my neighborhood near downtown KC.

Just set this up for our road trip from WA to SoCal, via Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah and Arizona.
Not overlanding by any means, just wandering our way south and checking out cool stuff on the way.
Our plan is to spend every third night in a hotel to get a hot shower and reset everything.
The other two nights in between will be under the stars somewhere in a Nat'l or State Park.

    Lots.
Some people just need to get OVER themselves! You've had your truck for ten years so that makes you OG, you had the first off road suspension, bed cap, RTT, winch bumper, etc.... You've "been there done that". You're a purist now. You get to define the genre. Everyone else is a just poser or wannabe. We get it. Sheesh!

Yeah, I've camped in and out of vehicles all my life . As a kid in Boy Scouts with just a shelter half, on the hard ass ground in the military, in college out of a beat up VW microbus, with my wife and kids canoeing down rivers and sleeping on the banks at night along the way. Now I'm at a point in life where I can afford nicer things and I'm building up my rig the way I want it, spending my money the way I want to spend it. Call it whatever you like. It's all semantics to me. Sure there is the BroMan contingent out there, the FB, InstG and YT "influencers", and then there are those of us who just like to camp and be in the outdoors when we get the chance. In varying degrees of comfort. Just because you have a nice rig, enjoy modding your truck and fitting it out to your liking doesn't necessarily make you a follower or some kid flexing his mall crawler on social media.

This is my current "camping" rig. Just ordered a Switch Pros and PowerTrays set up, an ARB dual onboard compressor and SDHQ mount for Memorial Day. The pics also don't show my recently added CVT awning and Maxtraxx boards. I'll install all of this stuff myself as soon as I get home from the SandBox. Until then I'll continue to amuse myself by spending my children's inheritance.

When I think about the term overlanding I think about what they are doing in this video. They are actually going over land, (and water); not play camping.
