What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

i think tundras have a square pattern on the backing plates, and the sequoias are more trapezoidal? Or vice versa? I think somewhere someone showed where he wollered out the holes to make it work, but i dont save links like i used to, so i lost it in the interwebs.

 

If that's the only difference... I own a couple drills and I have a hammer. I smell a diy thread of horrors coming on.

 

The old sos kit used sequoia parts. Maybe that’s why

 

Just got confirmation that my tundras doing it’s first “long distance” tow in a week or 2. 2002 Tacoma with a shot frame for $1200+ $200 for the cap it has. Bring her home 5 hours away in Wisconsin. Shouldn’t even break a sweat


Guess I’ll be starting a second Tacoma build thread. Since the 02 will be getting the old frame from my 01.

 

Mine did this for 7+ hours, you’ll be fine.

Of course, I didn’t look at trans temps and changed all the fluid within a week. But still... yeah, you got this.

How much suspension travel did you have left back there?

 

That might depend on how much pressure is in the tires.

 

I wish I would have gotten a pic on level ground. You can see in this pic that both sides of the parking lot sloped to a swale right under the tongue. It had some squat but it was nowhere near the bump stops.

Yes. The plan for this 02 is to put all the old shit from the 01 onto it. I was just at the machine shop today for the 01. Shit
should be done by next summer

Although those split spoke appear to have seen some better days.

The paint came off the sequoias 17” split spoke wheels. Looks like someone tried to wash em with something caustic before i got it.

 

The real kick in the head about the finish on the splits is that I like the wheels.
Buy by the time one were to have them sandblasted and refinished, you're damn-near the cost (and way over the time) of just buying new wheels.

(So I bought wheels instead of refurbishing mine.)

 

Ive been looking at colors for my starfish wheels, and once i narrow it down to 4 ill use the sequoia wheels as tests. So eventually the sequoia will have a white, dark silver, bronze?, and another color wheels.

 

It looks like everyone covered it and moved.on already, but it's relatively cake to pull apart. The worst thing by far is having to disconnect the brakes. I've done it 3+ times now, but it took me about 20 minutes to actually get the rear diff dropped since I had all my tools ready. It took me an hour to get everything put back together and the brakes bled.

If you can find something with the right diameter to tap the seal in right, it doesn't hurt to replace your axle seals while it's apart. I didn't replace them the first time and didn't have any issues, but I decided to replace them the second time it was apart since I was there already.

 

Not on the bump stops?
I have the softer deaver springs so I can't compare too well, but I was definitely on the bump stops when I towed my buddies jeep for 4ish hours. I'm glad I was able to level it out with the Firestone air bags I have. They make a world of difference with ride control & comfort when I tow.

 

Half a fuel tank of testing, stop and go, cruising the neighborhood, checking wheel & hub temps, and a few full throttle sends. All while running a/c. 17mpg. I am super stoked. Doubt my 2wd titan would pull those numbers.

 

I bought this '01 SR5 AC 2WD with 187k on the clock for just over $6,000 a month ago as a new project. I got the itch after having finished a 6 year resto on a '98 Jeep Cherokee and this Tundra caught my eye because the body is arrow straight and rust-free and the interior is 100% intact and functional.

It has been neglected on routine maintenance, so I do have some work cut out for me but nothing major. I've already installed Bilstein 5100 adjustables on the 4th setting to level the front with the rear and the front is now just 5/8" higher than the rear and I can live with that. Also had to replace the radiator with a new Denso unit, new OEM thermostat and Gates hoses due to what I'm sure was the original unit developing a leak along the top edge shortly after I drove it home.


Today I removed the fender trim to give it a cleaner look and began removing the side moldings before discovering there are mounting holes in the panels also, so I'm going to have to get some 3M VHB adhesive tape and reapply the side molding for now.

Oh, I also removed the TB and MAF sensor and cleaned them. Definitely long overdue and immediately noticed the results in performance and runnability.

 

Life goals right there.

 

What MY is the XJ? 95? 96? Here's a couple of my old 98 I finished a couple of years ago.

 

Every 3 Years the Truck comes up for review on selling or keeping. 2018 was a pivotal year to keep her for another 3 years based on two mechanics saying I was crazy for thinking of selling at 150k miles. I knew there was front end work to be done prior to joining here so there was some reinvestment to be done knowingly. At the time, our trucks were selling for $4-8k (both AC and Ridgeline Versions). Not knowing future World Events at the time, its been a smart decision barring any major/unforeseen new work.

Since committing, she has about $8k (Total Parts and Labor) put into her thus far over these last 3 years. Half that with New Tires and Front End Rebuild by 4WPlace. The other half is various stuff some needed and some not (performed DIY). I’m guessing personally there is about 150-200 man hours invested in time for the ‘little stuff’ shops won’t do or charge a fortune to do so. Some stuff performed was major like TB and The Shorty Header (aka Dream Killer).

Here is a list compiled of all the shtuff done (some shtuff not on build page). Almost all of the shtuff is in the Early Pages of ’What have you done’ until I started a build page but didn’t capture all that in it.

All in all she will be kept indefinitely at this point based on Goofy New Truck Prices/Market/Taxes, Time Invested thus far, and Sentimental Value of the Truck Shake Down over three years including the 17 years since she was bought new in 2002. It never crossed my mind she’d still be good as/better than new 20 years down the road. Here is to Legendary Toyota 1st Gen Tundras.

 

@PHM, Damn that’s a lot. I’m the exact opposite in that I just put in enough to get by and pass inspection. I think I’ve used every trick in the book to hide exhaust leaks before I ponied up and had it replaced from the CATs to tailpipe. There’s only so much you can do with rusted pipe that’s paper thin. lol

I will admit this vehicle has been the lowest cost of ownership for me of any vehicle. The most work I have done which I will most likely not do again is double coating the frame in POR-15 which has worked extremely well. Only downside is I cannot coat the inside of the frame and that’s where my issues lie.

 

Yeah. Up until 2018, I didn’t do a thing to her (never needed anything!) other than recalls and Oil changes/tires and one TB change at around 100k miles. By 2018 the front end was tired, though.

You have the salted roads which is brutal.

 

If you sold it, the poor kid of the father you sold it to wouldnt ever get to learn any maintenence.

but thanks for the idea, seems like you wrote down what you did when you did it. Or have an exceptional memory. Because my lists of repairs forgets things all the time.

 

I ain’t gonna lie, its a bit of both.

Mostly, I’d write out the ‘to do’ list on my Notes and think about it prior. The ‘to-do’ would be underlined and once complete the underline removed allowing me to move along to the next sequence. Some shtuff I had to refer back to the ‘What did you do section’. Lots of pics are there which I’ve since erased from my storage.

I have one more item on my list which might happen around Thanksgiving depending on sales discounts this year (Morimoto LED 2.0 Projectors). I’d like to rideout this next 6 months without forking $$$ into her.
