Another Exhaust thread....

Ok, so I know there are a thousand exhaust threads, and I read a lot but didn't seem right to post on those, or worried they wont be seen. So..

I have no clue on exhaust and thinking about upgrading mine. I know everyone has their own opinion, but I've seen a lot of people on here recommending BAM. Looked around the website and not sure what to potentially go with. Budget, 6", 8", 10", Duals? Need some advice @dirtydeeds PM or something maybe please. Trying to get a general understanding.

I dont want it crazy loud, but better sound than stock, while getting the benefits of a better system. Thanks..!

I have a 6" without resonator installed, I LOVE it!

 

Borla on mine... nice low rumble, no drone on the freeway...

 

How is the drone without the resonator ?
I am looking at possible getting the 8" and run no resonator.

I had my 8" installed for about 4 months without the resonator. It didn't seem annoying at all, since the drone did not occur where I normally drive the truck. A few months ago, I helped my friend and his dad tow a Porsche back up the mountain from Phoenix, and it was VERY boomy in the cab under certain loads going uphill. I installed the resonator the following day. I have not towed with it since, but it did seem to tame the overall sound a bit. It didn't CHANGE the sound, but made it more... pleasant? It sounds smoother at all times with the resonator installed. Frankly, if the resonator doesn't eliminate the boominess, I'll just live with it as I don't tow often at all, and I'm in love with the current tone. I feel that it's the perfect balance of quiet when crusing, and good rumble during acceleration. It also has a nice bark between shifts to boot.

it's my job to get to know a guy and figure out the perfect system for his use of the truck in all circumstances of his daily life.

I then build him the system and ship it so he can bolt it onto the truck using simple tools.

I have the 10" with the resonator installed and couldn't be happier. It's the perfect sound for me, loud enough when you step on it and super quiet while idling.

 

So do these exhausts actually help the truck and letting it sort of breath and perform a touch better, or is it just for sound mostly?

 

I know you mainly mentioned BAMuffler system, but I figured I would throw this out there as well:

I have the TRD system, I was skeptical about getting it at first as my first-gen was about as loud as it could be (Flowmaster super 10 with the resonator cut out - because race truck? lol). But, after getting the TRD system and driving around with it for the first few weeks I can say I'm happy I went that route rather than going for another loud system. The sound is there when you want it to be, but almost non-existent while cruising on the highway, which is nice when you're on long road trips or commuting around town. With my first-gen road trips sucked because by the time I got to my destination my ears would be ringing from how loud it was. I do miss how loud it was sometimes, but there's a lot of times I do not. Good luck with your search!

 

Thanks. I'm not sold on any 1 system yet. I only mentioned that because i see a lot of people go that route. I tried calling and it just rang. Like I said, I don't want to get something just for sound alone and for sure nothing that is crazy loud. A little louder than factory when you get on it would be cool, but that's about it. So yeah, I dont know.

 

yessir, they do help with HP. Truth is, any muffler that is a flow thru design helps with the hp and tq of most modern day v8 engines. Reason being stock muffler is made to be restrictive on purpose. Restriction is the cheapest way to make a muffler.

Borla, TRD, Magnaflow, Corsa, BAmufflers: All are a flow thru design. And whether single exhaust or dual exhaust all will gain 3-10HP and 10-20TQ to the rear wheels over stock. Not a penny more. The only way to gain more power is to switch out stock exhaust manifolds for long tube headers (not shorties).

That said, the key is to make this extra power without losing low end torque, and without droning your self to death. It has been my job for the past 15 years to build systems for tundras that address both issues: drone and low end torque loss.

 

I installed a Aero Turbine muffler last year on my truck and love the sound when idling and when you get on it but I was wondering if removing the resonator would give me more sound or just cause the drone? I also wondered if changing out the stock cats to put in more performance ones. I just want a little more rumble in my exhaust.

 

If you do not want it crazy loud, I would definitely get a muffler of some kind. I just had my buddy, weld dual straight pipes (with 4 Inch outlet Tips) under there. It sound great IMO. However it is very loud.
I am putting together a video now of the sound it produces for Youtube.
It will have the following components:
Overview/viewing of the setup
Cold start from 1 vehicle behind the truck
Cold start from within the truck (windows down)
Cold start from within the truck (windows up)
Revving between 1000-4500 RPM (windows up)
Revving between 1000-4500 RPM (windows down)
Revving between 1000-4500 RPM (1 vehicle length behind the truck)
Revving between 1000-4500 RPM (from within another car windows up), 1 vehicle length behind the truck)
Normal acceleration to 70
Moderate acceleration to 70
Aggressive acceleration to 70
45MPH drive-by
Driving on the highway at 70, windows up for 30 seconds

I figure doing this will give everyone a better understanding of the setup and what it will be like having it and listening to it daily.
