Wireless car play vs wired? Thought's, l'm going to have to plug in my phone for charging anyway, so leaning towards wired and the head units are cheaper, but interested in real world experiences.

Any any brands to avoid, leaning towards either Sony or Pioneer.

    My 0.02....

    Function: wired > wireless
    Convenience : wireless > wired

Either way is fine. Save some cash for other mods

I have been using Kenwood for years.

Need some assistance. FYI, I am a novice with anything electric...

I have a 2019 OEM Gt86 head unit installed in my 03. Love it, have the streaming and phone connectivity working.

I purchased a master Tailgaters reverse camera tail gate handle but my head unit does not have a yellow RCA input. Is there an adapter for my specific head unit I could purchase or some other work around so I can connect my current head unit and the reverse cam?

Thanks in advance for any assistance

I have a 2018 86 radio myself. You'll need to wire a 5v relay to switch 12v on for the reverse camera.

The 86 radio only has a 5v output for the camera. The aftermarket camera needs 12v to turn on. And if the radio doesn't see a camera signal when it turns on/boots up, it will not enable the reverse screen.

    Here's the radio diagram:
    Screenshot_20210528-103215.jpg

This is the adapter I made. It uses a small 5v PCB relay. A larger one would work too, Napa carries a 5v relay that is standard size (30a).

If its like AA, the updates all take place on your phone. The car's display is just that, a display for the smartphone app interface.

I really like the floating display, but doesn't it just scream "break my window"? That's my biggest issue with these things. I think I'd have to stick with a double din screen and keep my tint illegal for the small piece of mind.

I’m confused by the fitment problem I’ve run into on my 03.

The stock radio is slightly curved, and the dash cover panel is also curved to that same profile.

Replacement radios are all flat faced. None of them fit through the radio opening of the cover. So the radio sits well back, with an ugly crescent gap.

Now I can sorta solve this by cutting the stock panel, which assumes I can do it neatly and perfectly square. However, I don’t see any mention of this by others here in this thread. And, their radios seem to fit in neatly.

What am I not getting here?

Most of them stick a bit through the opening, past the curve. Yours perhaps doesn't?

You can get an 00-02 dash bezel. It has the perfect size opening with no install trim kit required. Otherwise you have to order a trim kit for your bezel to fill the gaps.

Mine did not fit through the opening. It was close, but not quite.

So the earlier 00-02 bezel is different? Presumably flat? I shall pursue this!

As for a trim kit, none seems to be made for it any longer. Wiring and bracket kits, yes. But I can’t find a trim kit anywhere.

Here's how mine turned out. Not sure if I ever posted a picture. Don't mind the dust...

Unsure of this curved bezel thing I'm reading about btw.

If it's the actual factory curved dash, min went on after the radio was in place..

Not sure which year they switched, but the earlier models like mine had a smaller opening that fits aftermarket radios better. No trim required.

For my 2002 Tundra SR5 AC TRD with factory JBL double DIN radio. I Installed ATOTO S8 Pro with front and reverse cameras. Bluetooth OBD2 scanner for Torque. A Kicker 10” subwoofer under driver seat. Using factory JBL amp and speakers. The DSP on this radio made these factory speakers sound high end at normal listening volume. So many options to adjust crossover, field of sound, subwoofer frequency, etc. Distortion starts when you crank it loud enough to allow others not in the vehicle to hear. I don't listen to music that loud anymore. So this is a perfect setup for me.

Question on the camera. Does it let you still see good. If you titled it down to just barley see part of the bumper.
    Thanks

@Hi06silver It has a 180watt built in amp for the 10 inch. For a all-in-one under the seat sub. It sounds way better than my last under the seat sub I had. That one only thump with no hum bass. The Kicker gets most of the common lower frequencies.

The radio I have makes a difference too. It has a dedicated subwoofer output that has its own crossover you can tweak.

The subwoofer has a built-in crossover and bass boost controller that I mounted in the blank next to the dash lights dimmer knob.

This kicker sub does not replace or sound louder than your standard port subwoofer box. You won't win competitions. But if you want decent bass, have limited space, and don't care to share with others outside your cab. This will work. I am satisfied.

Some songs I hear, I can feel the bass so well in the truck that when I step out. I hear nothing. That can be good or bad for some people.

I have it mounted under the driver seat and feel the bass as if it is a larger subwoofer box.

I am still able to move my seat front and back without interfering with the subwoofer. It clears.

@RR60 are you talking about my rear or front camera? I assume the rear. It is clear during the day. The rear camera I bought allows you to bend the metal bracket in the direction you want to aim your camera. High or low. I have mine pointed low to see the edge of the rear bumper and still see what's behind me.

It is not a wide angle lens. I am not able to see the corners of the bumper. You will not be saved if you back into a pole that you should see in your side mirror but not the rear camera.

Added pictures of the rearview view. Also of the camera showing it can be bent up or down for change of view.

I realize that some of the people I've quoted here haven't been around in a while, but those who are around... Are you still liking this alpine? I know @shifty` said that the Alpine start up screen is annoying. I don't think that's going to be an issue for me.

I have some questions about it that I haven't seen, or maybe skimmed too fast. If that's the case, I'm sorry for asking again.

Once you get past the boot up screen, can you change the back ground image?

Any issues with wireless connectivity with Android?

@FirstGenVol, the swipe volume thing... did that ever get fixed? Also, the day night thing with auto screen dimming... is there a way to turn that off? On both my Kenwood, I can dim the screen by long pressing the display button, and change brightness levels on both bright/dim. Is that possible with this one? Crackies windows are tinted, which is why I'm asking...

Is it annoying using touch buttons for volume? I've always had a volume knob, and can lean over and adjust volume without taking eyes off the road. Worried about being Knob-less...

Camera issues? I may have missed it, but does this head unit have the parallel "guide lines" the green, yellow, red lines? Any issues at all?

Likes, dislikes? Some of you guys have had thus one for a while now if you still have it...

The only problem I still have with my Alpine is that when my phone is actually plugged in, calls get startic'y within a few seconds and I can't hear the person at all. I have to unplug my phone and talk on Bluetooth. I've been told a firmware update would fix this but I've been too lazy to try.

I also wish it had a volume nob but it hasn't been a huge deal. And yes, I believe I can turn off the auto dimming feature.

Overall I'm happy with it but there could be better ones out now. The nice thing about Crutchfield is that they have great customer service if you have problems.

I’m running a pioneer 4660. The volume knob is the big wish. I used the remote a lot during my recent drive. Gotta get cracking on steering wheel audio controls.
