Mixing different brands of transmission fluid?

Would it be ok if I drained my transmission fluid and replaced what came out with Amsoil ws compatible? I know I won't get every drop out and was wondering if it's ok if the new mixes with some of the old? Thanks.

 

A simple drain and refill is only going to replace about 1/3 of the total fluid volume of your transmission.

I would not use drain and fill to replace ATF WS with another brand fluid regardless of brand marketing that says it's "compatible". But, that's just me. I'm sure it has been tried, and you may receive differing opinions.
You may even receive some actual positive experience with that approach.

If your service duty indicates a need for fluid change (60K? miles), and you want to switch to Amsoil ATF, consider replacing the entire 12-13 quart fill by disconnecting a fluid cooler line, and pumping out/replacing the fluid two quarts at a time. That way, 95 percent of the ATF WS will be replaced with Amsoil at reasonable expense and much less labor.

There will still be some mixing of the two fluids at the displacement interface, but that's unavoidable if the Amsoil is being used to push out the ATF WS. If the two fluids are even close to compatible, that small amount of contamination will be immaterial.

Yeah it will the drain it’s only just a little bit and not the entire amount out of the transmission. you would have to drain all of it and then put in amsoil.
I’m curious why do you want to use amsoil vs Toyota’s atf ws?

 

I was under the impression that amsoil makes a WS compatible tranny fluid. I also read somewhere that amsoils fluid runs about 20 degrees cooler also.

 

Negative. It is “recommended “ by them. WS is the only truly “compatible” fluid.

 

The Amsoil WS is completely compatible with the stock stuff. Call Amsoil to verify if you must but it is compatible.

 

The smarter move is to call Toyota and ask them if they have certified Amsoil transmission fluid as replacement for WS. Well, if you value your warranty anyways.

There is not any reason for an automotive manufacture to certify an aftermarket supplier for ATF production. It has been this way for decades. Most people don't service their transmission and the ones that do will likely only use ATF 3-5 times over the life of the vehicle.

 

I belive Amsoil does in fact offer better protection for both hot and cold as it is a 100% synthetic product. The Toyota WS is not. It is also compatible with WS and you will have zero issues mixing. There is also a video on YouTube where someone compared WS and Amsoil Transmission in a -45 degree flow test. The WS wouldn't flow at all, while the Amsoil did...actually quite well!

I had the dealer do a drain and fill on my 2020 PRO using Amsoil at 25,000. I plan on doing again at around 60,000 and again at 100,000 miles. I may extend the interval after that.

Following this first drain/fill, shifting was noticeably smoother. Unfortunately, I don't have a scan tool or gauge so I can't compare TQ or pan temps.

Since the truck does not have a cooler, it gives me piece of mind knowing I am keeping this fluid "fresh", as well as knowing I am using what I believe to be a superior fluid.

 

Valvoline Full Synthetic...works great...can get @ walmart $17/gal

I've used the valvoline for years...4runner, sequoia, LS460L & highlander.

 

Toyota is only going to officially certify non-Toyota fluids. They make money off those fluids.....And mixing in a fluid that is certified WS is not going to void your warranty. That's like saying because you used Mobil 1 0w20 in your engine and not Toyota 0w20 your warranty is voided, that's simply not the case. If the fluid is WS certified it is compatible with the transmission in these trucks and it is compatible with the warranty.

Engine oils and transmission fluids are entirely different animals and should not be compared when there is a possibility that your transmission warranty could be denied. Your engine oil is specified to an industry standard and engine oil manufacturer test and certify to that standard. Toyota WS is a proprietary formula manufactured to Toyota's specification. As far as I know, they have not certified any aftermarket ATF manufacturers with the rights to WS. Will other ATFs work, sure. Can your warranty be voided, of course.

Remember, a synthetic lubricant is not always the "better" fluid. Look no further than synthetic gear lubes and LSD clutches.

 

I've worked as a technician in a handful of dealers and private repair shops over the past 20 years . Never have I ever seen anyone take an ATF fluid sample from a blown transmission and send it off for analysis before approving warranty repairs . Same with engine oil.

Your living in a dream world , welcome to real life . WS fluid is mediocre at best . Its made by exxon mobil for toyota , Its a semi synthetic .

Amsoil , maxlife and other full synthetic aftermarket fluids are an upgrade compared to WS . There is way more evidence out there online backing my statements compared to your weak and unrealistic argument.

Again if it's certified WS it's compatible. You are wrong about the warranty. Well I guess, sure, they could deny the warranty but after the lawsuit they will honor said warranty. Toyota cannot deny any warranty if you use the designated trans fluid for the truck, which is WS.

 

It is not certified. It is listed as "suitable" by Amsoil. And yes, if I smoke my 2020 transmission with 10K on the truck, I am quite certain that Toyota will perform an oil analysis. Will they deny my warranty if I have fully synthetic Valvoline in it? Not sure, but they did not want to even spend the time looking at my drivers seat that has play in it. Maybe they just really love replacing transmissions and not seats. It's your truck, do what you want. Just do not tell others that Amsoil is certified for WS, it is not.

They, as many other do, are playing with words. Where does it say certified? It is recommended, by Amsoil, the manufacturer. Use it if you like, I am sure that is a quality product. I am just saying that it is not certified. Recommended by Amsoil and certified by Toyota are two very different things.
