    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
As long as my paid off Tundra is running well, I'd rather just get another vehicle for better mileage. Ain't gonna lie, that new IS500 looks pretty tempting. HA!

Sad that you are willing to assume that some of us don't actually NEED that kind of range out of a vehicle. I'll be towing 3K-4K lbs 300 miles one way on friday, towing it more on saturday, and then making a 300+ mile return trip. Towing at 60-65 that's going to be at 5 hours or more travel time. 300+ miles is a minimum when your nearest major cities are 150 miles away from home.

On the note of towing: How many charging stations have you seen where you could easily pull a trailer through for charging? I can back and move a trailer fine, but "99.99999%" people can't.

On the note of travel and travel while towing: Every hotel doesn't have a charging station, so that multiday cross state/country trip just got way longer. If they do have a charging station, how much you wanna bet they are going to gouge you to "rent" the space to charge for the night?

Don't get me wrong, EVs are likely going to be the default vehicle at some point, but it won't be in this decade.

Partially but you can have full credit if you want. I was originally referring the the “supercharger” reference, of which a 240V level 2 charger is NOT, but saying that most people can use a Level 2 240V and don’t need a supercharger at 800V, which is much more expensive.

That’s what I thought we were talking about. Clearly I was wrong :)

I have nothing against EVs, but I just can't jump on board this early. Seems like a hybrid would be much more practical for a truck with where we're at with battery technology at the moment. Obviously people that need to tow significant distances can't really buy these right now--I know I wouldn't want to pull over after ~100 miles towing my boat or travel trailer and charge my truck for who knows how long.

The amount of people that use their vehicles like you referenced is very small and the study’s prove this out. Perhaps I embellished the stats a bit ;)

I would only ever advocate for the best financial model for anyone. In your case it would certainly not make sense if you are regularly using your truck like that. If you are a commuter EVs will make sense most of the time. If you have to pull the space shuttle you need something different!

The Percentage of people is small, the amount is not. 500,000 of us in Wyoming alone, so easily going to be millions or tens of millions in the nation as a whole. Sure, 10 million people isn't a big percentage of the country, but it's A LOT of people.

The big populations on the coast seem to forget that the middle of the country is a lot more spread out and run off of % of population stats instead of numbers of people. See below.

Completely agree! EV's are not ready for prime time, with are current infrastructure and the range:recharge ratio. Battery tech is still in the exponential growth phase of its development, once it begins to flatten out I think a lot of the current shortcomings will be done away with. That is unless nitrogen and man made fuels don't supersede it by then.

No the F150 Lightning does not work for what I use a truck for. The range will be really short towing a trailer on grades.

I was meaning that the coastal people feel that way about those of us in the middle of the country. All in fun of course.

This is seriously the best forum of (pat yourselves in the back) real people! Smart, informed people!
I’ve never owned a Ford. I’ve trusted Consumer Reports and played it smart. My Tundra was a sound investment.

It’s seeming more and more unlikely that I’ll trust an untested Ford to transport my family. However, I want to get away from the gas station and really wish there were more options that didn’t seem like a death trap. Wish Toyota would hurry it up.

Nope. I’m a recovering Ford-aholic and I’m determined never to go back to that horrible company and their abusive dealership network.

But in truth, the truck falls short on range to be anything but a urban grocery getter.

Call me skeptical right now. Just this morning I saw the Chevy Bolt at Costco. Sticker price was $39k. IIRC base price was $36.5k. Range about 265 miles.

Seems optimistic that Ford can put out a 4x4 truck with 300 mile range for about that same price that would be worth a crap. And reading the press release, that $40k truck is bare bones...as the mid level XLT jumps quickly to $53K.

I could definitely be fine with a vehicle with 300 mile range. My longest normal round trip is a bout 40 miles.

But at this time...no...I will wait. I can see this technology advancing by leaps and bounds the next decade. I will enjoy my new Tundra for the next 5-6 years and see where things stand at that time.

@CM2007 are you planning to keep the Tundra? I would love to hear some feedback when you get the Ford. Hopefully you don't run to a Ford forum and leave us wondering.

Brave to buy the first year of such a new vehicle. I hope they did tons of R&D and got it ironed out.

I didn't reserve one but I had a cybertruck reserved and backed out when I bought the 21' Tundra. The Lightning looks promising on paper. Real world experience from some Tesla owners here in southern Ontario is the mileage gets killed in the winter. If I was going "electric" I would prefer a hybrid.

I called a dealer about it today. Found out:
    1. The 39k is a stripped down work truck with 230 mile estimated range.
    2. An extended range for that work truck is only offered to commercial customers that own fleets. Aka you can't buy it.
    3. If you want an extended range you need to get at minimum an XLT trim that starts at 53k.
    4. In an XLT the option to extend your range (about 300 miles) is around another 10k. So 63k wow!

No to mention you will need to have an electrician install the right receptical / circuit / wall charger. I could see this labor, with tax, titles, etc hitting 70k easy.

To that I say I'll keep my limited crewmax that cost like like 38k. And save the remaining 30k+. Even at CA gas prices that will buy a ton of gas.

I saw a mustang machE, the other day. Some how people had meetings on the design and that’s what they came up with. Sole reason you should not drink at work.

Yeah but it's kind of a pittance compared to the recall behemoth Ford. Hell, just one recall from Ford dwarfs that.
