Call it blasphemy if you want, but I just threw down $100 to reserve a new electric F-150 Lightning. It’s the first EV my family can actually fit in (3 kids). The $100 is fully refundable. I’ll probably not want to shell out $40k for a base model in 2022, even with the $7,500 rebate, but I figured I’d see what happens with real world range and other specs as they come out.

Did anyone else throw down for a Lightning? Why or why not?

No. Too short of range. Oh, and Ford will totally f*** it up. I cant even imagine a new Ford with that much untested technology.

Not a Ford guy, sorry. I wouldn’t really think of an EV from Ford, at least not yet.

Battery technology is changing so fast that 4 years from now there will be a huge difference in life and safety of the batteries.

To soon. Don't even know the full specs yet. Kinda like buying a spouse that has a bad history with setting fires without knowing anything else about her/him. Ford has problems with trying to stay on the bleeding edge and pushing through designs that aren't perfected. I used to be a Diehard Ford fan. I still have a 1997 7.3 F250 (to be sold pretty soon). Their trucks have been catching fire since 1982 so it's just a little early to jump on the Ford EV bandwagon yet.

Ford Again Recalls F-150 and Super Duty Pickup Trucks for Second Repair over Engine-Block Fire Risk
The F-series has been under several recalls and investigations this year. Back in April, Ford recalled the 2018 model for potential rollaways due to a transmission defect. In June, a small number of 2018 models had fuel and oil leaks. Then in September, Ford recalled more than 1.6 million trucks for fires that could start in the B-pillars. In October, NHTSA announced it is investigating F-250 and F-350 pickups for faulty tailgates.

Owned one newer Ford. It was enough of a POS to convince me never to own one again. I love American products but a Ford just doesn’t cut it for me.

No, but excited for the new Tundra and how this might push Toyota to bring out a hybrid Tundra sooner rather then later. I reserved a new bronco for the wife and after months of delays and set backs we went and got her a new JLU Rubicon. Ford seems to be new the new Tesla in how they announce and reveal all these new vehicles and then we don't see them for years....

No but, my son has a Tesla (Halo) truck on order for more than a year.
He's way up there in position and I laughed when he said there were two design revisions since he put his order in.

Can;t wait for the sheer number of people who pre-ordered to come home and realize they can't super charge it because their home isn't setup for it.

Then can't wait for the Ford dealers to have a list of local electricians to come remedy.

And the number of people who balk at another $2-$5k to upgrade their electrical service.

Yeah, with their hybrid history, I'd give it a good 20 years before I'd trust an all electric Ford

With current technology, I don't see the point of an electric truck; I bought my truck to tow and haul, particularly long distances on the highway to places that have no power.

When we're ready to replace my wife's Corolla (in 10+ years, I hope), I'll see what the technology looks like and consider if we should go ICE, hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell, EV or something else.

FWIW Toyota recalled pretty much all 2016-17 Tacoma’s due to the rear ends being susceptible to locking up and causing a crash.

200k+ were eligible for the recall.

Sad part is 99.999999% of people will do just fine on a 240V charge with minimal work at the house, fully charged from 0 in a few hours. Also sad that 99.99999% of people think they “need” 300+ miles of range. You basically go to the “fuel station” every night at minimum when you home charge.

    DOE Facts:
80% of people will charge at home (think at night)
95% of round trips are less than 50 miles

Similar position here. For a commuter and EV would be ideal, in any form, so long as you have appropriate charging abilities at home. As I'm a single vehicle guy for now, I need a vehicle that can do it all, and EVs just aren't there yet. Maybe in a decade, but I also hope that my Tundra is running strong and I don't need a new vehicle in 10 years.

I think the issue is road trips. I make trips to CA every year.

1500 miles would require charges that would add quite a few hours to the trip.

As it is with my Tundra it’s about 4 fill ups or about 40 minutes of fill time. That’s like one charge at 240v. You’d still have another 4-5 more charges on the electric to make too.

No they won't "do fine" with that. In the upper northeast, many houses are served on 40 or 60 amp panels.

Even 200a service is going to be tough with a simple outlet and modern families.

I see your point but renting a car for 1-2 per year vacations and saving on gas year round might be cheaper all considered. It’s certainly a normal emotional response to plan for “worst case” but when you pencil it out I’d bet it’s more expensive especially as gas goes higher.

Maybe up there, but down in the south most people buying EVs are going to have a higher rated panel (newer construction) so you’ll have space. Plus most people will be pulling current at night so it’s not going to cause an issue.
