Range when towing

My '05 DC is 2WD, but I think would still look better with rims like yours. May I get the specific type of rim and size that you are running? The tires appear to be all-terrains.

They are the factory aluminum wheels with 1.25” Spidertrax Spacers. I have 4 Toyota’s running these spacers right now, and they are the absolute last thing I worry about failing.

I love your idea of the MPG being worthless without more info, that's very important to really compare. I find it interesting how much lower the MPG tends to be on the 5.7. I wonder why Toyota hasn't looked into a transmission with more gears, but I don't want to derail this thread too far.

Probably because they are ditching all V8’s and going to a Twin Turbo 3.5L V-6 in the 2022 Tundra

 

I have a theory that I will probably never be able to prove.
I think if you set up a 4.7 tundra and 5.7 tundra side by side, pulling the same trailer the MPG would be very similar.
I think it may just be that the 5.7 has the ability to burn more fuel, to climb a hill or whatever.

Right, but they've been running the 5.7 with the 6 speed for 14 years. They have 8 speed transmissions in their stable, which makes me curious why they didn't drop one into the Tundra.

I wouldn't personally want a turbo petrol motor for a workhorse, too much heat. I'm hoping it opens doors for obscene tuning at least.

Aint no turbos happy with cheap gas. And i dont remember the range, but i averaged over 12 mpg towing 8000lbs in the sequoia. Best towing vehicle ive ever had, hopefully the tundra is similar.

I actually have yet to tow my travel trailers with the 5.7 at all but I have towed a 6x12 UHaul for 1300 miles twice with it loaded fairly heavily and the truck bed crammed full of tools too and I was really surprised by the only slight drop in mileage though there were few hills on that route from STL to S Florida too.

I think the worst towing mileage that I have ever gotten was also in a Sequoia with the 5.7 oddly enough?
Stupidly small trailer but through insane winds through Kansas,Colorado,Wyoming and Montana!
If I could have kept it at 55mph maybe it would have been better but I also would have been run over at that speed as it is everywhere these days it seems!

Just like estimating horsepower by looking at the fuel rail of a carb. Or a carb... Horsepower is an amount of fuel more or less. So injector size regulates max, and depending on how much fuel you can burn, how much horsepower you can use, affects the the milage directly. Some people are better at it than others. I drive in the middle of the night, and usually tuck behind a fast trucker, and run blocker for him. When dad towed the same load with the sequoia (‘71 nova loaded with garage stuff; 8100 lbs) he got 8mpg, but was during the day, and stopped in schulenburg for lunch... i like to watch the instant mileage on the roof screen thing, and even empty, there are lots of situations where i do better by turning off OD and part throttle 3krpm.

Truth on the Turbo gas requirement.

Here's some pics just for reference on the 5.7 towing. The RS1 weighs ~1400lbs and the trailer is a bit more than that IIRC. So 3000-4000 lbs weight range on these tow trips. Both trips were the same load and almost the same route. The lower MPG one was me taking the RS1 home, and the first time I really towed with the Tundra so I was travelling faster than I would now. Way more wind as well. Wind will absolutely gut the MPGs and staying under 70 MPH helps a ton, too.

 

When we were pulling Ironman back home in my buddies 5.7 we were averaging 65-70 and about 9 mpg.

 

What have I done......

 

Proved that 1st gens need 2nd or Turd gens towing them to get anywhere?

 

No way that thing had 4,000lbs in it.

 

Trailer is close to 3k lbs. weighed it at a truck stop.

Thank you sir. I currently have aftermarkets that the previous owner purchased from Discount Tire which are fine, but the stock rims look much better in my opinion. My DC is my first Toyota so I'm sponging up tons of information. By the way, I didn't see the rims at first due to the background.

 

Just an update as I’ve had some interest in this mod. This spring I started having issues with the aux tank not fully draining. After trouble shooting I found that the solenoid return spring had shattered and was jamming up the valve. Replaced with new.

I then accidentally left the solenoid powered over a 3 day weekend last month. The maker of the solenoid recommends no longer than 8 hrs or damage to the coil can occur. So once again the tank wouldn’t drain into my main.

I did a little more research into other options for valves. I spoke with US solid (the valve manufacturer of the solenoid I had been using). They recommended a motorized ball valve with auto return.

Only consumes 2 watts, can leave on indefinitely with no concern of damage to valve. Orifice is 8mm, huge compared to what the solenoid was (think it was 1.5mm), and ip65 rated control box.

Just installed and tested today, think I’m going to be much happier with this.
