Hmm, wonder if the hybrid part would offset that part of the V8 advantage?

Toyota is never going to chase things without breaking down every aspect of it first. This is why they have over 1000 patents on a new battery which if they can pull it off, will revolutionize EV tech. Toyota doesn't need to be the first

It absolutely does. The F150 hybrid is incredibly fast off the line right now.

Other than the turbos being added all the other components get equal stress if not less. The 3.5 EB has a compression ratio of around 10:1, the 5.0 coyote is around 12:1. So the V8 components are getting stressed more. And they turn the same RPM's. And turbos are far from an issue when properly cooled.

If Toyota is indeed going after tuning it right up to get in the TRX Raptor R range then the standard 400ish HP version will be well overbuilt and able to last significant mileage

Exactly! An then add a simple turbo timer to it with an egt gauge so you can lock the vehicle and leave it running until the turbos cool and it may be the most reliable truck. As reliable as the Prius. Toyotas most reliable vehicle right now

I personally hope the V6TT works out and will be a dependable power plant in the new Tundra. I love my 5.7 and wish they would have went with a V8TT, but it is what it is. As a turbo fan myself, I will definitely test drive one to see if it meets my wow factor. My little WRX is still going strong after 17 years, and still scares the wife to death. :) Change the oil frequently, and let it cool for a few minutes after a run and it will give you tons of fun.

2017 Silver Sky Metallic Limited. Ordered it from the factory. Loved it. Sadly, it just wasn't practical. I need a truck and couldn't afford both.
Love those "blob eye" WRXs. Just couldn't buy used.

Only had mine two years, and bought it new, so it never achieved the "shitbox" status. When I drove it to the dealership to trade it on the Tundra... it was not easy. Leather, heated seats, push button start, nav, BSM without the ugly parking sensors, and a six speed stick. It was the nicest car I've had. The ride was rough, but that MFer was on rails in the twisties. :burnrubber:

What did you end up with? I’m in the same boat but am going to wait to see what this Tundra’s numbers are. I’ll likely go 3/4-ton though. My needs have changed since buying my ‘16.

Do you not understand what forced induction does? Kind of seems like that might be the case.

The static compression ratio is not the only determining factor, in fact under boost the boost level has a rather significant impact on the effective compression ratio.

For example that Ford EcoBoost at 10:1 (which is the high output unit) under only 6 psi of boost will have an effective compression ratio of 14.1:1. Frankly 6 psi is nothing, that’s the kind of super mild boost you’d start with if you put a blower on that aforementioned 5.0L to make some useful power without being too hard on engine components or needing to put in bigger fuel injectors.

That same 3.5L EcoBoost towing, actually getting into and holding full boost of 16 psi when working hard, you’re looking at an effective compression ratio of 20.9:1. That is a lot more cylinder pressure, considerably more combustion pressure, and that means considerably more force per combustion event (not to mention heat) that the rotating assembly has to endure.

    There is no free lunch.

Yea turbos cause more stress, yes they generate more heat, yes is more parts to fail. But we're talking about Toyota, not a domestic. Toyota has a long history of building absolute bulletproof bottom ends and I have absolutely 0 concern in the 2022 reliability.
I'd bet there will still be 3-500k original engine tundras in the future. Turbos will be rebuilt or replaced sure, but you'd have to run through 5 EB motors to go that distance.

The EB is quite good now. They had some teething problems with the first gen, but the 3.5 EB is now more reliable than the 5.0 Coyote. As long as Toyota doesn't bury the turbos so deep it's a huge labor job to get at them doing 1 or 2 turbo replacements to get to 500k miles is a pretty small maintenance cost. With that type of range most people will never have to worry about more than scheduled maintenance.

EB has benefited tremendously from the addition of port fuel injection on top of the direct injection. Less carbon build up on valves.

If Toyota does it right they’ll do a hot V engine with turbos up top.

Despite my reservations I’m still probably going to end up buying one. Probably not this fall though, given automotive prices and demand. I don’t need to pay dealer markups, and I’m not willing to either.

For me to switch out its got to look really good ...has to have many improvements over the previous generation including ride towing and payload.

If not I may just keep my 2016 it's been pretty good overall

Hopefully it keeps it reliability ratings which will be unknown for some time.

Current Tundra is hasn't disappointed me yet ....BUT looks like I may be into a expensive repair with the timing chain tensioner starting to make quite a bit of noise ...dealer hasn't diagnosed the noise for sure but that's what they think it is +/- $4000 estimate. Disappointed for something that should last the life of the engine special when it's maintained like I do. Hopefully it's not !!

With Ford's release of the Lightning, Toyota will once again be behind the curve when the Tundra is released without an EV version. Not saying I like the EV trend, but it's a trend nonetheless.

When I as young and building engines left and right for bikes, cars, even lawnmowers I learned a few things.
For car engines, I always went to gear drives when I had the chance.
Unless it was just a rebuild for normal driving then chain would suffice.
All my GM motors had gear drives installed. They whined a bit but, I liked that sound.

EV’s are probably a large part of the future, maybe not the end all be all but they’re going to capture a huge market share.

I know going forward that if I build a house it will have 240V service in the garage with at least an 80 amp circuit, if not a 100 amp. Probably have an EV in the future myself and will need a way to charge at home. Already have 240V in my garage but the breaker needs to be upgraded to support the draw of charging a big battery.

I am happy to see someone beating Elon Musk to market with an EV truck. Screw Electric Jesus and his over promising, under delivering, Ponzi scheme running ass.

I believe toyota will be on top when its all said in done. They play the long game not make publicity stunts. They don't just do things to do it, they do what makes the most since. Just like there not jumping on this all BEV train. There looking into BEV, fuel cell, and even running hydrogen in an ICE. They are taking a common sense conservative approach and understand that we can't just force everything to run on batteries in 15 years.

This is what I am hoping. Then in MY2023 or so come out with the Tundra / Sequoia Prime to get the best of both worlds.
