The P/O hauled a gooseneck trailer. Needless to say, when I bought it, the rear suspension was flat. I put OME shocks on, and put new OEM springs on, along with a long add-a leaf from Toy-Tec. Got 3 inches lift out of it. I currently pull a fairly large pop-up camper, which says is only 3,750, but requires a 2 5/16 inch ball. I pull it through Salt River Canyon several times a year, with no problems. I also have truck box mounted right behind the cab, full of tools and parts, as you do not know what is going to happen out in the middle of nowhere.

 

Here in AZ you can't even find many 1st gens in the salvage yards, and when you do find them, they are picked clean of anything useful.

 

Part of what gets me a bit jazzed about my old 1st gen is the 8' non-composite bed. But I also wonder, on an old truck, you could really make it look new/badass with something like this if it were ever an option for 1st gen:

Definitely would not be cheap but the thought of having what would be effectively a mini super duty gets me rather excited. Particularly the flat bed with drop sides.

 

I love these replacements. However the full kit with the canopy is almost 10 grand. Might be more might be less depending on area.

Lots of love for the Gen1 in my household. I'm glad I got in low! Last year at the start of Covid dealers and private sellers were almost giving vehicles away! As to the debate on 2WD or 4x4, my philosophy is to pick the right tool for the job so get both! You don't always need 4x4, so just use it when it's needed. I find the 2WD to be a bit quicker and more responsive comfortable to drive, especially at highway or cruising speeds.

The are excellent beautiful trucks with the right balance of power and nimble frames.

Both of mine are in overall excellent condition. I just did a bunch of routine maintenance to each. A bit more maintenance to do but these should serve me decades, God willing!

I'm new to all this but glad to see they have a strong following. My soon to be driving 15 year old son needs a good first vehicle. I wanted him to learn to drive a stick and found an 06 taco 5speed 4x4 last year with 203k miles. He knows how to drive a stick now but I was never fully satisfied with that truck.
Found an 06 AC Tundra TRD 4x4 with complete service records in exceptional condition for 11k at a dealer. It has 242k miles but has had 3 timing belts put on it. They gave me more for the taco than I paid for it so almost an even trade.
We took it on a 1200 mile round trip last week to break it in, no issues.

@ToyotaJim Nice trucks. The brake fluid looks mighty dark in both of them though.

I had a 2004 SR5 Access Cab from new until 220,000 miles. It was a great truck. Never had any failures or break downs, just the timing belt every 90,000 miles and routine maintenance.

I replaced it last year with a 3rd Gen CrewMax (TRD Sport 4x4). I miss the easier parking of the 1st Gen. However, the 3rd Gen gets equally crummy gas mileage, has more power (5.7) and interior room, and the stock brakes are MUCH improved. The rear drum brakes on the 1st gens are no good, and I never had luck keeping them in adjustment. It remains to be seen if the new one will be as reliable as my 1st gen, but hopefully it will.

I realize that the interior size comparison isn't fair between a 1st gen Access Cab and newer CrewMax, but its what I had. At the time I bought my truck in 2003, the Double Cabs had just come out, but I didn't have a crystal ball for that far into the future!

That said, the 1st gen Tundra is a steal compared to what Tacos of that era sell for. And the 4.7 is far better than the mills in the Tacos.

 

Here in the Northern Rockies 1st gen 4x4 Tundras sell for quite a premium, especially if they don't have the frame rust. 4x4 is a must here, and there are lots of 80's Toyota pickups in very ugly condition still running around here.
I have a Green 2006 and a White 2004, both 4x4 RCLB. I recently paid $13500 for the white one. It took six months to find a "deal" like this. No rust and straight body 130K miles. In Montana, 3-400K mile Tundras are common. Lots of highway driving.
Sometimes I see a Mexican dragging 3 old Tundras/Tacomas South. They don't have wealth down there and dont mind driving something with over 300K miles so long as it runs. Don't sell yours cheap.

Low low low miles original Arizona truck
I am the second owner original owner never drove this truck it sat in his garage most of its life
I bought it last year it had 14,000 miles on it
It now has 24,000 miles this is a amazing truck in excellent condition
Has the v8 engine 4x4 runs and drives like new
It’s definitely a collectors truck at this point
So rare to find a classic Toyota with such low miles in this condition
This truck should be parked and preserved as a true collectors truck or if driven it will last for decades to come

Buying a super nice southern low mileage first gen Tundra seems like a better choice than a new one, IMO. But.........low mileage can mean that it sat without being driven while someone was in the sandbox or prison for a decade means that there is risk involved. If I were to buy something 17 years old with 24K miles I would want to know it was at least driven once a month or so. Study the history. Three things will ruin a vehicle, abuse, neglect or lack of use. Don't underestimate the latter.

My 2003 Stepside has giving me no problems since new, but then again at only 60K it's just broken in, used for just hauling stuff and pulling my Travel Trailer to the Beach.

 

Now on BAT. One owner 2006 ac limited 4wd 16k miles, the winning bid on this unicorn will be Legendary.
