I bet there are 10-15 things that could be built for a lifetime+ of use that aren't. If a family never had to rebuy those things I bet it would change the trajectory of a lot of families.
House (most houses are built for life for the most part)
    Car
    Washer
    Dryer
    Fridge
    Deep freeze
what else? What other big items do people go into debt on over and over?

I was born in the wrong era. When I was a kid I loved riding in the bed of my uncles truck. If I had kids I wouldn't want to rob them of that experience. Maybe its good that I don't have kids.

Our house AC failed last year as part of our July 4th celebration. Big house means big AC unit. New inside air handler + new A coil + new outside unit (3T heat pump) + ducts all sealed = astronomical bill. It's changed the trajectory of my DINK household. I shudder to think what would happen if we had a bigger family.

If Toyota could make a rust resistant vehicle and supply parts for 50 years, it could last for life. Totally plausible, not realistic.

Good call. Hvac is a big one. The water heater could go on that list as well. The well pump could probably go on that list.

I can’t seem to find the thread for the step by step on how to change this. Anyone more technologically advanced able to find the link for the thread please?

And know any YouTube or step by step how to on changing the steering column/key switch?

    Thanks!

The problem still exist with getting parts. Even now some of the parts for our trucks you can’t get brand new. You need to scour a salvage yard.

I really like the pickups with tundra glass. I actually think I still have some tundra glass laying around from a build that never finished. Some nice spindles for a long travel setup that never got finished too. The suspension on the 2wd pickups are pretty easy to build. I'd say they almost as easy as my a arm ranger.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

Most automakers have a contract for the life of the vehicles production run, and in that contract there is an agreed upon "service" parts time frame. Machines that were used to produce those parts are costly, and are usually modified for the "new" run of the next vehicle.

For instance, here at my factory we make automotive door weather strip for the current tacomas, the current tundra, hood seals for the current tacoma, and the current Highlander. We have moonroof weather strip too. Still not sure which vehicles that one is for... We have a few processes for Ford, and one for GM.

Our Tundra process is to be phased out by November of next year. When that happens, the best molds, notchers, and machines of that process will be chosen for "service" part machines. We have to maintain, and be ready to operate those machines for service parts. Typically, a service part contract is 10 or so years. Sometimes 20 years.

That's a long, long time to have a set of expensive machines tied up just waiting for orders. Talking beaucoup monies.

Sometimes there's only one order in 10 years. Pretty shitty return on your investment.

We are lucky that any parts for our trucks can be purchased new.

I've cross referenced for frames for my truck because I was going to buy one new, but toyota has already discontinued Regular cab, and Access cab frames. Currently, they are still making Double Cab frames, but don't expect that to last much longer.

So who gets the machine, casts and dies when you’re done producing? Does it goto scrap, do you hold onto it indefinitely or sell it to China? :D

We had some first gen Tundra processes WAY back in the day. In 2007 the machines divied up, and sent to Mexico, and Canada. Molds still in the press.

We have a "mold rack" that has stuff from the 80's. I don't think they ever throw anything out. I don't understand that. Especially if it's discontinued parts. At least get then out of here, and sent to a foundry to be recast into a block of steel.

Also, none of our molds here are cast molds. They are all machines from large ingots of metal. I'm talking micro surgery.

I think I'd say we are lucky the tundra is desirable and therefore valuable enough to warrant having parts available. The rest is just capitalism at work. If the oem didn't make the parts still, someone would fill the void if the demand was high enough.

I wonder what a brand new 1st gen would cost today if they recreated it. I would happily take a 1st gen with the 4.6.

Pops was looking at Kubota tractors at a dealership in the late 90's. He struck up a conversation with the manager there. Long story short, the manager explained that if you purchased every single part of one of the $25,000 tractors, and assembled it... you'd be looking at close to $150k.

The cost would be astronomical if purchased individually.

Edit: I suppose that could have been a marketing ploy, but I wouldn't doubt it with the cost of parts that I've seen from dealerships..

Furniture. Didn’t know you had to replace or buy furniture from a real store (not goodwill) until I got married. Sad to think of all the forests and child labor going into fashion furniture just to be tossed to the curb in 5 years.
