I think they are part of the reasons outside of political reasons and people wanting choice that actually is causing EVs not being pushed out faster. I didn't expect Toyota for example to say they will stick with the ICE alongside hybrids and EVs just like I did not expect Ford to leave it up to the Mustang fan base to determine the fate of the ICE Mustang. While EVs are still coming this news from two of the biggest Automakers here in concerning ICE vehicles was surprising but makes sense. The demand is still going to be there even if California tries to ban ICE vehicles from being sold in 2035 and I am 33 so maybe even past my life expectancy.

Ford is most likely going to keep the 5.0, Ecoboost, and the hybrid around with the lightning for another generation. Eventually the pure ICE could probably go away for a hybrid only setup with the EV but ultimately I think that is where I see things going with Toyota too. I used to think GM putting all their eggs in one basket was probably smart a year ago but now I think keeping the eggs in the other baskets is a smart way to go for at least the next two decades.

Ford also likes to name things incorrectly like GM did with the Blazer they did it with the Mustang Mach E since its a crossover. I also think they did so with the Lightning. I get it from the stance of the name lightning is technically electrical from an EV standpoint but still could have thought of something else.

Sounds "oh no, how dumb" on the surface, but it has been ...never in my 47 years has a power outage lasted longer than three days. So yeah, theoretically you'd have a problem if you live in an area where an outage might last longer than three days, but in that situation you'd probably have backup generation capability anyhow. And in that rare instance, recharging from fossil fuels would still be better than doing it for millions of vehicles every day.

For the other 99.999% of the people / time, it would be just fine.

    1) I'm not an engineer, but it seems pretty obvious to me that generating an equivalent amount of energy - regardless of the fuel - in relatively few central locations, would be hugely more efficient than a million tiny power plants (that most owners do not run efficiently, maintain, etc.)

    2) Easier to manage pollution from few centralized sources rather than millions of tailpipes.

    3) Yeah, a lot of power plants in the US are *currently* fossil fuel based. Doesn't have to - won't - remain that way much longer.

    4) 100 years ago we didn't have the infrastructure to fill millions of gas tanks.

    5) Electricity sources can be at everyone's homes, places of business, etc. Not gonna install a Chevron station in my garage.

    6) If we paid anything *close* to the true *total* cost of gas, it would be a different story already.

Nah I will use my solar panels to power them.
A lot of battery tech is still in the works, some for carbon based batteries. If that is the case, I wonder if any of the people spewing "Hur dur lithium bad" "hur dur you use fossil fuel to refuel" will finally shut up.

I have a clarity plug in hybrid I use my solar panels to charge. I still produce enough electricity to send back 40kwh to the grid. It goes to work and comes home without fuel.

I love my fossil fuels, but those of you that think EVs aren't the future or at least hybrids are really stuck in time. They not only drive better than their fossil fuel counterparts, but they can do so with using less fuel.

I like the idea of being able to run a “house” with it, but in a different sense. I’d be cool to be able to pull 5000-8000 lbs camper out to the boonies somewhere, run everything in it off the truck for the weekend, and then return home, all on single charge. Unfortunately, for now, the range is not there to accomplish that.

Am I the only guy here without a Garage or any reasonable ability or the logistics it will require to charge an EV at all?

I am baffled at the lack of any decent Truck Hybrid options which require no fixed charging lines at all and still up the performance and economy of Gas power at the same time.

Ouch. I live in UT and could not even get out of town in 90-100 miles.

I love the idea and completely believe this tech will eventually get there. Shoot, how can it fail when government(s) subsidizes its advancements if not outright cover the cost of its advancements to the detriment of its citizenry?

I work in the oil industry & can say I am no where near as bias as you might think I could or maybe should be about this tech. The tech always blusters "clean emissions" but I assure you they are not even close! It's why you will start reading more about "carbon displacement". This way the tech is viewed as a method cleaner then the alternative (gas). Funny how we still have no understanding of how all this Lithium will effect the environment once it begins to hit landfills. Especially since we will need to have new designated landfills to store it as a volatile biohazard.

Overall its pretty cool if you don't pull anything heavy or you never want to go anywhere far. Truth is, there are a lot of people this type of truck will suit very well and that makes it pretty cool for them.

Latest census has us at 330+ million folks. The vast majority are using electricity for things other than EV's they can't afford, can't get yet, and that yuge elephant in the room......infrastructure to support that pie in the sky. LOL
    Hybrid....me likey.....
......meanwhile, a coal fired plant is being completed and commissioned every week......somewhere I won't mention. I'm all in for a Yota hybrid.

    For what it's worth ..

Ford does have a patent on a small gasoline generator for the bed of the truck (think bed toolbox size) that will charge the electric batteries on the fly. Details are not known at this point, but could potentially give an electric truck unlimited range (with gas of course)

They plan to make this an add on, or accessory. Sad not details come out with this during their big unveil of the mighty F-150 electric..

They really need more in the marketing and engineering department, it's bad enough they obliterated the 'Lightning' name, and on top of that they come out with a garbage base model POS that will be beat by far on every level by Rivian, Tesla, and probably any other manufacturer. At least Ram has balls!

As soon as Toyota builds an EV pickup all things will be well in the Toyota sycophant departments. :hattip:
That being said, I currently drive a Tundra. And when I start looking to replace her. I hope Toyota has a competitive product. We shall see in 2022.

I think it was mentioned in here but that $40k is for “commercial”. The Platinum is around $90k if I read that right. Even with all my equity in my truck, tax credits and possible deal....that’s still crazy expensive.

Im not going to get into the rumor mill for the 2022 Tundra. I’ll just wait. Electric would be cool. But not at that price.

    A few thoughts...

    1. Most people haven't really thought through the facts on electric power generation and storage. The power doesn't materialize out of thin air (except for natural lightning and static electricity) - it is generated by other sources, e.g., hydro, nuclear, coal, solar, wind, etc. Hydro is great as long as you've got a river. Nuclear...pretty efficient...used in Europe...and everyone wants a Chernobyl in their back yard. Coal fired plants no more because all the coal miners lost their jobs. Solar, great for solar atomic clocks and desk calculators--I don't believe the efficiency is quite there yet. Windmills are great as long as there are wind currents turning the airfoils (the hubs must turn all the time, so when there's not wind, there are backup generators turning the hubs). Currently, most electrical cars have a few hundred miles before plugging in...all the gas stations will convert over to electric stations and have parking lots the size of the race track holding all the Ford Trucks right now.
    2. The battery technology - the best we seem to have right now is lithium. The next great environmental disaster. Anyone interested on how to put out a lithium metal battery fire? When encountering a fire with a lithium-metal battery, only use a Class D fire extinguisher. Lithium-metal contains plenty of lithium that reacts with water and makes the fire worse. As the number of EVs grows, so must the methods to extinguish such fires.
    3. Power grid infrastructure - hell, many grids cannot handle a heat wave and consumers running their air conditioners during peak. Brown and black outs on the way.
    4. The average family has 4 people or so...imagine the parking area or garage to recharge everyone's ride overnight. I had three kids, and at one time, we had five autos going during the day.
Electric vehicles sound good and may make you feel better about saving the environment but we are decades from being able to roll over to EVs completely...because the infrastructure is not mature enough...and if we tried to rush it, John couldn't even leave the light on for you.

    Interesting.

For their first attempt at a full size truck that's all electric I think they hit it out of the park. A bunch of power outlets, the ability to power your house in an emergency, fairly fast charging time (41 minutes) if you use DC. The range isn't bad but not great either at 300 miles. But honestly, who is driving 300+ miles every day in their truck.

Infrastructure for worldwide use just isn't there now. Go down to Baja Mexico and try to find a charging spot.

I'm wondering who will be the first company to make a solar cell tonneau cover so it'll charge while driving.
