Let's take a trip down memory lane. When you were a child, what did your parents drive? What kind of good or bad memories do you have from your parents vehicles?

My pop had great car taste.
We grew up with a 68 Challanger w/manual trans, then to a 1970 340 Duster sublime auto trans bench seat column shift green interior.

Our first family Toyota ..... 1980 Corolla 4dr
And my pop bought his 1981 911 Targa

My dad drove Toyota pickups, one red 88(maybe) with the worthless extra cab and 3.slow, but before that he had a little blue Toyota pickup, fond memories of him picking us up from school and driving home sitting on the tool box in the bed and holding onto the ladder rack(less than 200 yards home, still legal here too)
Mom had two minivans, most recent one got stolen by high school kids, drove it to Mexico for a bail, and it was found........down by the river, in town, will more grass all over than a landscaping truck!

My Dad was a Ford guy, we had any Ford he could get to run. When I was in high school he bought a ~70's F150 and a F250 for $700. He pieced them together and made one good truck. He also had a couple 1965 Galaxies when I was in elementary school. Working on those Ford's taught me a lot about cars.

    - Late 80's early 90's B2200 pickup. I have very little memory of this because they sold it when I was 5 or 6.

    - 1993 Chevy 1500 Suburban. Big, comfortable, loads of memories of family road trips from BC to Alberta to Saskatchewan

    - 1990 Toyota Hilux 4Runner. Diesel, 4cyl, 5spd, right hand drive. Dad imported it from Japan. Decent truck, very underpowered. I did my road test for my licence in it.

    - 2004ish VW Jetta Wagon. Diesel. Insane fuel economy. Dad never let me drive it.

    - 2005 Toyota Tundra double cab. Their current vehicle. They towed a travel trailer across Canada and back a couple years ago. It's sitting at well over 500,000KMS (310,000miles) on it now. I don't think they have any plans to upgrade.

At one time, Dad had an Oldsmobile Delta 88. What a battle ship and that tank could smoke the tires all day.
Drove like a land yacht and had an awesome back seat.
I remember one time my date and I watched a James Bond marathon from the back seat....
I wonder what ever happened to her..

Dad had a 77 f150 two tone x-cab. He sold it for nothing and got a 90 f 350 dually, and that eventually for 99 7.3 that he still has. They also had an 80s accord they bought new and sold at 299000, having only done basic maintenance. Then a 94 Montero, which liked to eat 3.0 Chyrsler motors, ending with a Suburban for mom.

Great thread… my dad worked for GM and got a new car every 3 months - us kids loved when he came home with a new car. He never did bring home a Corvette like we begged him. Mom drove a 1978 Buick Wagon that had a 350 V8 and whopping 180 HP!

Grandma had a 1978 Sedan Deville that was a BEAST, drove it until she was 98 years old.

My dad's vehicles (years owned in brackets):

    1974 Firebird - 400 cubic inch V8 making 190 hp. He loved it. (1976-1980)

1980 Firebird - inferior to the 74 in every way. He hated it. (1980-1984)

1984 S-10 Blazer - bought (new) to tow the boat he didn't buy until 1986. He had actually been considering a used Jeep but, when the inspection found there was no compression in one cylinder, he went to the GMC dealership and bought it. Replaced CV boots every year and exhaust every 2 years. All the electrical failed. This is the vehicle that caused him to swear off power locks and windows for 20 years and GM forever. (1984-1993)

    Vehicles my parents owned together:

1989 Chevy Sprint (Suzuki Swift) - body rusted away but it ran like a watch. Super easy to shift. Only sold it because he wanted something with enough seat belts for our entire family for short trips. (1989-2003)

1993 Mazda MPV - replaced the Blazer when my youngest brother was born. Built in Japan and leftover on the lot from the year before. RWD was nice for towing the boat. Pretty small for a minivan (shorter than my grandparents' Buick, for example). Was never the same after my mom drove it up a steep hill with me and 5 of my friends inside. I did most of my learning to drive in it. Imagine trying to learn to merge when you've got the POS floored and can't get up to freeway speed. Needed a fair bit of work when he sold it to a mechanic. (1994-2009)

2003 Pontiac Vibe (Toyota Matrix) - best car he ever owned. Other than a slight leak in the clutch master cylinder, didn't have a single problem with it. Interior was super practical. He used it to haul everything he needed to build a sleep shack at our lake lot except the plywood; made multiple trips out there with the wheels nearly rubbing the fenders. I learned to drive standard on it. If I hadn't wanted a truck, I might have bought it from him but it was much more difficult to drive than either car I've owned. (2003-2019)

2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara - about the only option for a compact body on frame 4x4 at that time and my parents didn't need a 3 row vehicle any more by that time. The only issues they've had with it so far have all been due to the incompetence of the Suzuki dealerships. (2009 - present)

2019 Hyundai Kona - for whatever reason, my dad wanted one of these from the day they came out. I was trying to get him into something more practical like a Corolla wagon or an Elantra GT but he wasn't interested. Fuel economy is even better than the Vibe and my mom likes it so much that she makes my dad drive the Grand Vitara now. Has had a couple issues already; backup camera stopped working and something else I forget just now. (2019-present)

The only vehicle I know for sure my mom had at one point was a 70s Corolla. Her parents bought it for like $800, she and each of her siblings learned to drive standard on it and then they sold it for $800.

Earliest memory of a family car is a red 1971 super beetle, followed by a doo doo brown AMC Hornet and a Ford Aerostar.
    Dad had:
1973 f100 ranger xlt with a three on tree. 2 wheel drive long bed, 1982 2 door Monte Carlo
1971 international scout 800b (was my first vehicle)
    1994 jeep Cherokee 2 door 5 speed
    2017 Ram 1500

too many memories (mostly all good) to list here

My grandpa had a Delta 88 at the same time as my dad had his first Firebird. They were driving home from town to the farm where they lived and decided to see who could hit the fastest speed on the stretch between the campground and the turn off to their place. Dad hit about 70 mph in his Firebird. My grandpa hit 100 with the Olds.

Earliest I can remember my mom had a Datsun. I believe it was a 120, it looked like a lemon to me with the yellow paint. I remember her cramming myself, my two older brothers, and 3 of my cousins into the back. My aunt rode shotgun and we went to Mexico that way often, a 3 hour ride.

They knew they needed a bigger car. My mom spotted a Caddy coupe Deville for sale around the corner. Baby blue with white leather interior and a white vinyl roof. It was seriously nice but thirsty for gas. I'm not sure what year it was but I wouldn't mind finding and buying one some day. Edit- I believe it was a late 60s or really 70s. 2 door and round headlights.

That was sold and a mid 80s Chevy Caprice wagon was the new. Burgundy with dark red interior, the trips were much more fun when we could lay down(not on top of each other).

My grandpa bought a brand new Aerostar and sold his 83 F100 to my dad, he kept that forever and may still have it for all I know. It was flat white and rear wheel drive with dog dish hub caps and a 6 cylinder. I still remember getting in it and his radio (Realistic) would be cranked. He always seemed surprised and turned it down right before lighting a cigarette. That truck had a weird tweed seat cover that itched like hell. I rode in the bed pretty often.

They sold the wagon in 89 shortly after my mom came home in a brand new Oldsmobile 98. I never understood why it was called a 98 if its an '89. My parents divorced a few years later and while waiting to cross the border back to the states the serpentine belt broke. We hung out at some mechanic shop for seriously 9 hours but it got fixed and was fine after.

I went to live with my dad for the Summer of 94 and he drove his new wife's car most of the time. I didn't realize it then but it was to save gas, and because his truck was a Ford. Her car was a Mazda 323, I was surprised my dad knew how to drive stick. I never saw him drive a car aggressively until then, we went up to see the sequioa trees and he didn't let off around the winding road.

Mom sold that Olds in October of 95 for a 96 Ford exploder. It had the Firestone tires and all, v6 rear wheel drive gas guzzler with absolutely no power. I bought that off her around 2005 and gave it back to her in 2008. She bought a 4 door Accord, absolutely no personality but its bulletproof.

This is my favorite of the the vehicles I can remember my parents had. Early 70's Chevy station wagon with fold out seats, and the rear window rolled down all the way. Was the perfect drive-in setup.

Seeing the posts about all the old cars with HUGE V8s that didn’t top 200 HP makes me laugh. I remember my dad driving a Olds Delta 88 diesel. Thing was a pig!

It's the car I learned to drive on. An early 80's, maroon Volvo Station Wagon., standard transmission. I remember waxing and cleaning it so M&D could trade it in for an early 90's VW Jetta automatic.

    Volvo 245
The 245 remained in production for almost 20 years, having been manufactured from 1974 to 1993.

Looked like the one below, but ours was more reddish maroon.

I just remembered the first Porsche my pop bought back in like 1978
    It was a 72 914 1.8 Yellow.
We went to pick it up from the seller, my mom and I were in the her 76 Plymouth Duster and apparently my dad didn’t latch the hood when he put the targa top inside.
On I-495 he passed us just as the hood blew up, smashed against the windshield and flew off the hinges, landed and was run over a time or two if I remember correctly.
I can remember my mom telling me to stop laughing….. So I was a bad kid, I can admit it now.
This thread has made me smile and laugh a few times!
    Thank You @Darkness

let’s see if those - I got handed down/bought the D100, Talon, Skylark, S10, Silverado and most recently the 2018 Acadia.

The D100 was by far the best - S10 wasn’t bad - Talon was a POS but I think dad paid $300 for it and I paid half that - Silverado was “gifted” to me after dad passed (I gave $$ to give to my sister to help with a car so there would be no hard feelings - big mistake) and finally the Acadia I bought to save it from turn in out of moms estate (figured I could turn it for a few bucks - did much better than I ever thought with the recent run up)

Overall dad had good taste in trucks - questionable taste in cars and kinda wish he’d kept that VW Bus.

Those D100s are great. My grandfather had a 1985 that he bought used from a government agency (forestry service maybe?) and ran until it was about 30 years old. If it had been a short box, I would probably be more upset about my grandma selling it after my grandpa passed away.

You tend to have good thread ideas. Except for that one that involved having to wipe your ass after not having pooped for hours :poking:

My mom drove one of these, a 1991 Ford E-150 with the V6. Not this exact one, but looked just like it except it had running boards. It was her pride and joy, she waxed that thing like every month. I know, cuz my job was climbing on the roof and doing that part. Even being white, that sumbitch was hot enough to cook an egg in summer :bananadead: We visited every state east of the Mississippi except Wisconsin in that thing. We'd lay the third row flat cuz it folded out into a bed, and my brother and i would play back there while we flew from state to state. No seatbelts, just all over the place. Good times.

These were my dad's DD. The International was when I was little. It was all white, probably not the same year as this, and nowhere near as clean. I don't really remember it much, but looking back, I have no idea why he needed such a rig for an office job. The Mazda was my teen years, and how I learned to drive a stick. He paid cash for that one; it was so stripped down it didn't even have a radio. He probably had to special order it as basic as it was, but it cost him less than 10 grand. I got in my first wreck driving it to a high school golf match. It didn't have ABS (big surprise) and the brakes locked up on wet pavement when I went into a hairpin curve too fast. But, since it was so stripped down, there were no airbags, so when I hit the rock wall outside the curve, I just backed up and kept going. He noticed the bumper being cock-eyed when I got home and my ass was grass.

I see so many 80s and 90s Toyota pickups and T100s around KC. It's amazing how many are still chugging along. Most of them are beat to hell and have at least one bungee cord holding a bumper or body panel on. I imagine the mechanicals have been maintained about as well, but they just keep going.

    My Dad drove Rams.

Started when I was 10 with a '93 Ram 1500 Single Cab Long Box, 318 V8, 5 speed manual, 4x4. Bright Red. Otherwise, a stripper spec with no options - rubber floor - manual everything, no A/C. A proper truck, so to speak.

Then in '97 he upgraded to an Emerald Green Ram 1500 Extended Cab with 6.5' box. Still a 4x4 with a 318, but this one was an automatic. One trim up from the last one - and ST - with cloth seats and manual locks/windows, but at least this one had carpet on the floor. Still no A/C.

In 2003 he gave the green truck to 20 year old me, and bought a 2003 Ram 2500 in silver with a Hemi, going back to a single cab, 8' box. This one wasn't a base WT model, but still pretty low spec - power windows/locks, A/C, but not much else.

In 2010 (by this time I had moved out of the house) he switched again, this time buying a 2010 Ram PowerWagon. This thing had some options. Not only in that it was a PowerWagon (awesome truck!!!) but but UConnect, power everything, sunroof, etc.

Probably where I got my love of trucks from.
