Trading Up from a Taco

I had a small Toyota truck before they even made Tundras. If I had to compare my current Tundra to that "little man's" truck, it would be no contest. The Tundra wins, every time. Like others have said you'll trade MPG's for power and size. And size matters!

 

I won't be one to complain about gas mileage...being in the oil & gas industry I just figure I'm helping to keep myself employed!

Currently own a 2016 5.7L Tundra and 2003 2.4L Tacoma. Use our Tundra as a tow vehicle for our travel trailer, and long non towing trips. Use the Tacoma for a tow vehicle for motorcycle trailer, small boat, and local errand vehicle.

Had 5 people lined up to buy our previous 1987 Toyota 22R 2.4L Pickup, and the first one in line bought it. Already have folks wanting the 2003 Tacoma.

 

Trade up here myself - never looked back.

I was in the same situation you were just days ago. I ended up selling my 2012 Tacoma (which I loved dearly) for a 2017 Tundra. The Tundra is incredible. I took some photos of the Tacoma before I sold it and don't regret my decision at all.

 

Anyone remember "shrinky dinks?" you throw the little things in water and they expand to full size.

Krezz just added water and it grew! I wish that would happen to me in the shower

DId you powder coat your bumper or color match with new caps?

I definitely miss my Tacoma. The 6spd manual tranny mostly, but it was a fun truck. I miss it but I have never for a second regretted my decision to upgrade to a Tundra, especially with my wife spending a good portion of the last 5 years pregnant. Beware though, you can't go back once you make the switch!

 

The bumpers are just plasti dipped black.

 

So speaking of, been meaning to ask, does plastidip hold up against things like flying rocks from cars in front of you on the highway, or is it pretty much a constant repair process?

 

I had an '06 Tacoma 4.0L 6spd, double cab 'till last fall, I loved it. I can't say I've forgotten about it, since my back pain reminds me daily of the day it died it's early death by collision. But I only really miss it when I leave pavement.

I've had that thought more than once, pretty sure I could go back down the road once the kids are grown and moved out, but there might be a supercharger involved. The 5.7's power is a thing of beauty, though I've never been a power hungry driver, it is addictive.

 

I'd assume it'll chip like anything if it gets a good direct hit, but I've had between both trucks over a year and a half of the application and through winter and I travel gravel road to work n back and so far so good or lucky.

Yeah I got rid of the chrome pretty early on lol.

 

Welcome to the fun-zone! I'm a previous Taco owner who upgraded to the 4Runner (twice - 2010 & 2014) but all of them lacked something (not including gas mileage) and the Tundra seemed to fill that void. What you give up in gas is power, capability and maybe even customization. I didn't touch my 2015 4Runner out of fear, but here you have a welcoming community and tons of DIY knowhow. That's pretty unique and not worth understating. When you buy a vehicle - regardless of the brand - you join a family (or community if family is too personal for you) and you gain many benefits.

Buying the Tundra was tough for me because I value economy over anything else, but the community here has shown me how/why the trade off makes sense. Dollars and sense!

After reading what I wrote..I'm quite embarrased. Are you good with the finish on your bumpers? I saw them and assumed you painted or dipped them

 

hahaha I was pretty confuzzled -- the finish of the dip is pretty good yeah. The matte black looks clean. I have had some poor finishes when I first attempted to use the stuff on my Tacoma grille, but quick learning of how to apply it and use a slow build up of layers resulted in some good clean finishes.
