Coal is on the way out (in the US) and we didn’t mine for lithium. This past January the US opened a lithium mine in Nevada.

Electricity is by far greener than combustion engines. Power plants are going to run anyway, are way more regulated in pollution standards than automobiles, and if we are being honest a lot more efficient. More and more electric generation is being generated from renewable sources (wind, solar, hydro, wave/river). Most modern power plants are most efficient at base load (full power) instead of sitting at the bottom all night long.

I run a Combined Cycle Power Plant and the changes in the industry these past 5 years has been mind boggling to say the least.

We are averaging $1.30/L in southern Ontario, which works out to $4.07/gal….no shortage of trucks on the road.

With that being said, going back to 2006-07 I remember lots of guys sidelining their guzzlers as daily drivers. If prices go up enough for sure people will seek better economy, it’s just inevitable. The Toyota 5.7 is probably dead already. I speak coming from buying a 21’ just to get the last enjoyment before it’s gone.

This is the tech we need. My kids could provide fuel indefinitely, probably for our entire neighborhood

I don’t see prices going much lower than what you see today, plus the guaranteed yearly carbon tax.

First - let’s start with the intel you have that a major oil company predicts the price of gas will rise. Have you ever heard ANYONE in a major oil company say - “Oil is gonna crash - we are screwed…time to stop drilling”.

No - same logic that causes major bankruptcies every generation. Similar to the airlines / every 10-15 years the industry overproduces - drives out any profitability and causes contraction in the ranks. In turn the lack of competition leaves a few standing and they drive up prices - only to restart the cycle again.

Now to the - will V8s lose favor with $3-4-5…gas?

Look at what makers did from 2000-2006 engine wise and used car prices…or 1973-1976. Both periods of high oil pricing. Gas got pricey - everyday drivers sought out cheaper cars for daily driving and the gas guzzler waned in popularity. The moment gas got cheap - EVERYONE had to have the most powerful car they could get their hands on. People stopped buying Accords and bought big SUVs and Challengers.

We are seeing it now - we have been conditioned to think sub $3 gas is cheap - and we will trade off efficiency for power. We buy the non efficient and so far have resisted the push to go efficient. Give it a year - if gas stays above $3 - that will change. But for now it’s full steam ahead on v8s. As with everything - the reaction is rarely calm and rational…it will be an overreaction and the smart ones will buck the trend and buy what’s cheap going against the lemmings.

Reading a few post in this thread - it sadly makes me realize WHY our energy situation is so screwed up.

Some people literally have zero idea of where our energy comes from or how it is made. Just as there are folks out there who think they helped the environment greatly by driving a Tesla 3 blocks to work the local Hookah Bar and Beard wax store - we have those who are the complete opposite in wrong thinking.

I don't want to hear politics or engage in political discussions here either: cuz, it pisses me off.

That said, the pattern here makes me disinclined to participate as much. What's the pattern?

    1) Free speech
    2) People get butt-hurt because they are weak
    3) The forum shuts it down [to SAVE LIVES and PROTECT THE WEAK, no doubt:monocle:]
    4) No one gives a shit

I don't want to hear political crap on here, either. It's an oasis, hopefully, from that. However, I like censorship even less.

Our country is in sad shape when absolutely every avenue of discourse is regulated and controlled and managed and deleted and edited.

We have become a WEAK NATION.

God bless those who are awake and remain free.

P.S. Now, back to regular programming.

Well said. Also, if you are shopping for a $50K truck, I would hope you can afford to fill up the tank even when gas is expensive. If not, you're making a poor financial decision.

In a slightly different vein, I'm still surprised Ford decided to ditch all their cars. Didn't they learn anything in 2008?

They did - that they can’t build cars consistently that are worth buying.

Now if Fiat would school Dodge on that lesson.

Make every ‘car’ you build a special edition of 5000 or so per color..create artificial demand and build em with only v8s. Make buyers think they are buying something special.

It’s not like they are selling 30.000 anyway - so do 6 colors at 5k each every year.

Watching other groups and forums, Tundra owners will keep their 5.7. That being said I see the trend as being to have a paid off Tundra. What you pay in gas per month to feed the beast is still far less than the monthly payment and gas costs combined. .02¢

I feel the sting from 12mpg, but it's not enough to get rid of my Tundy. I'm fixing up a 1988 Mazda B2200 reg cab short bed and hope to use it for my semi-daily driver. It will still be getting only 20mpg so not a great improvement but at least I'll keep my Tundy miles low.

I will pay the $80 because I have put a lot of mods into this truck and its almost paid for. I hope to not start over on either of those fronts if I can avoid it.

    More than a few.....
I live in southern california, the gas prices here have been around $3.00 to $4.00+ a gallon for years now. You should see the amount of trucks here, alot of them with lifts and huge tires. The amount of trucks on the road has noticeably increased in the last 10 years. Every other house here has a truck in the driveway.
